If we used the Japanese standards here, probably 90% of men over 20 would be overweight.

It might be a good source of government revenue. Law firms would pay millions of dollars a year to the government for all the fatties on their payrolls.

90% of men? Really? I think most in-shape guys are around 30-32?

avatar

US also has way taller men. Isn't the average male height in Japan like 5'4?

avatar
8 Posted by guest | Permalink Tuesday, June 24, 2008 11:12 AM

I think those inch figures for Japan must be off. Why would men have a *smaller* threshold for obesity than women? That makes absolutely no sense at all.

I'm 6'1" and weigh like 150. I'm very slim, but I still have a 34 inch waist.

If you're a woman, you're a goon. If you're a man, you have the worst build possible....flabby and skinny.

Also from that NYT article:

"A survey by the National Center for Health Statistics found that the average waist size for Caucasian American men was 39 inches, a full inch lower than the 40-inch threshold established by the International Diabetes Federation. American women did not fare as well, with an average waist size of 36.5 inches, about two inches above their threshold of 34.6 inches."

Hey, you can show me all the charts you want, but if you're 6'1", 150 lbs., and have a 34" waist, you have a bad build. Are you an African marathon runner?

avatar
16 Posted by guest | Permalink Tuesday, June 24, 2008 11:48 AM

I think this is discrimination against foreigners. The average Japanese man is much likelier to make that waist requirement because he's much less likely to be 6'4" and athletically built. If they wanted this to be about health, they could have based the requirements on body fat or something with an actual bearing on health. You can be perfectly healthy and have a 34" waist - but not if you're a 5'8" Japanese man.

11:39, it's clear you don't know what you're talking about. But yes, I do run, regularly. A 6'1" frame weighing 150 lbs with a 34" waist is not a bad build. What are your stats, big shot?

avatar
18 Posted by guest | Permalink Tuesday, June 24, 2008 12:40 PM

5'10, 185, 31" waist. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you never played any sports growing up. With that build you had no choice but run. Running, the activity for those that can't compete in sports.

A lot of 6'1" dudes at 150 have builds that are slim, but not abnormal or gross. Here is an example (SFW):

6'3" 265. I'd like to see those little Japanese dudes line up on a football field. I may not be svelt, but I think these set requirements are a joke. Muscle weighs more than fat so it may be misleading. I know guys that played running back (and before you crack a joke I played in the Pac-10)

Whoever wrote that "they played D-1 soccer" shouldn't brag. That's like saying you were on the fencing team. Virtually no one plays it that is a legit athlete. If every african american played soccer instead of footbnall, basketball and baseball, you would have ended up playing D-III for Carnegie Mellon.

Also, what kind of an insult is that? Are you 10? Here, I'll respond in kind. I am in the closet...with your mom.

Roller hockey? Oh man, you people are really making this too easy. Listen, I'm gald you won a "club" championship. Try playing in a top college program, then we'll talk. I know those clubs are really selective, but there's a slight difference. Club. Was it sponsored by Seamus' Old Towne Tavern? Thank you. I needed that laugh.

As to your latter comment: I said I went to UCLA, so you be the judge on whether you went to a "better" school. I never clerked. So you got me there. That being said, I'm not in the lit dept., so who cares?

What a pathetic thing to cling too. "I have a better clerkship than you." The strength of that comment is in keeping with your girlish figure.

wait, now it's a girlish figure? I thought I was flabby?

You can't seem to make up your mind.

Go back to reviewing draft 83.6 of that contract, you transactional monkey.

Finally, I find it hilarious that only playing certain sports at certain D1 schools qualifies one to be an athlete or have an athletic figure in your opinion.

avatar
49 Posted by guest | Permalink Tuesday, June 24, 2008 2:32 PM

Why one or the other? You're a flabby girl.

Aren't you in a clerkship now? You're going to mock me for doing transactional work. That's rich. Try to wise up. In biglaw, even the litigators don't go to court. How often do you think they actually do any litigating? Boy, you are green. Hold off on your moronic comments until you have a real job.

Have fun next year when you start your 3 year stint in doc review.

As for your amorphous figure -

Well, one guy said soccer, you said club hockey and running? What sports have you mentioned?

Athletic figure? Trust me, at 6'1" and 150lbs. no one would mistake you for an athlete.
