Summertime, and the Living’s… Easier.

Beach.jpgIf you’re a full-fledged lawyer, your summer schedule probably doesn’t change much from the rest of the year. But for law students, summer is a chance to get away from all our fellow type-A classmates and do something different, potentially more fun, and preferably not in the food service industry.

We enjoy telling the tales of summer associate adventures gone wrong (e.g., hooking up instead of building houses and putting a partner in a headlock). But the summer associate tips have been slow to come in, so we’re wondering what else law students are doing.

Some SEN cohorts are using their summers to spend time abroad, doing programs in Switzerland, Australia and the Philippines. But the two classmates inspiring the most jealousy this summer include one who is working at the Pentagon and got to meet Justice Alito, and another who is working for a movie studio and got to eat lunch next to George Clooney. Hmm, what if you had to choose between Alito and Clooney? It’d probably come down to your political leanings and other, um, preferences.

We know you guys probably got to travel to exotic places or meet judicial superstars during your summer jobs. Spill the details about your best law school summer experiences in the comments.

I spent my 1L summer studying abroad - I did 6 weeks in London taking a class in copyright law and interning at an international media production company - the one that produces American Idol and the Apprentice (and even The Price is Right). Highlight of that? Meeting Simon Cowell in the cafeteria. I followed that with 2 weeks in Cambridge with a class in Constitutional History with Chief Justice Rehnquist, and then 2 weeks in Munich taking more IP classes. I spent my weekends traveling and met a lot of cool people. Spent the last three weeks before classes in India. It was one of the best summer vacations ever, especially considering 2L summer was spent working and after graduation was studying for the bar.

Alito and Clooney? Big deal. I got to perform substantive work on a sophisticated, cross-border transaction. Later in the summer, I drafted important briefing in a complex, bet-the-company lawsuit. In each, I worked alongside internationally renowned partners.

Top Legal Talent gets more than just the occasional "make work" assignment and pseudo-glamorous social outing. We get the same work we would as a first year associate, and our contributions are critical to the success of the matter and the firm. (T5-->V10)

you guys are really a little too harsh; there's no reason for you to diss her, unless your ego is so shot that you need to pick on law students trying to make a buck. That's like Isiah dissing on a junk ballplayer, like kobe.

Isiah understands that you get abused by partners all day, but there ain't no need to pass that on to some law student blogger. go for someone bigger, like Anucha, and really strike back at the Man!

I really have no axe to grind with SEN, but this is exactly the type of post that led people to rail against her the last time.

We understand that ATL will have weak posts now and then, see, e.g., Habit for Humanity, but Lat has earned that. SEN has not.

if I was SEN and I was coming back, I would have made sure that I had 4-5 good, interesting items to lead with. If she keeps going down this path I see things getting ugly again.

Exactly, 5:14. SEN, listen up: we don't want to talk about what we did over the summer when we were students. We all got sick of that subject when we had to discuss it ad nauseum while we were interviewing to, you know, get real jobs. Come up with better material or go back to your own "blog."

Worked for a Vegas firm where none of the partners got along with each other. Each Friday was a pallning meeting snarkfest.

To make things worse, the apartment we (a classmate of mine had taken a SA at the same firm) had rented was in the ghetto two blocks from the Strip (and not far from UNLV Law) and had crackheads squatting in it.

I ended up having a terrible SA experience AND having to sue the property management court for my security deposit and first months rent back.

The upside - I got my own trial expeierience (without the firm that subsequently broke up) and was awarded treble damages. The downside, the judge told me I could have amended my complaint for my hotel, rental car and flight back for the trial (i provided receipts).

The lesson, avoid small firms and amend your complaints.
