What To Wear To Work on the Weekend: Open Thread
Summer associates, hopefully this thread has no relevance for you. But for everyone else out there, here’s a question for your consideration: What should you wear to work on the weekend?
That’s the subject of discussion over at Corporette:
It’s the Aughts, and Blackberries and the Internet mean most work can be done from home. Still, there are times when there’s just no way around it and you’ve got to go in. This presents a special challenge: you want to look cute, cool, hip — but you’ve also got to look professional. If the hours are long you’re going to want to be extremely comfortable. Odds are good the air conditioning will be at full blast, so you also want to be warm.
We’ve found a bunch of great jackets that have a structured look to them, yet they’re made of fleece, jersey, and other fun fabrics — they’re almost as comfortable as your old reliable sweats. With a nice (non-ripped) pair of jeans, and a cute pair of closed-toe shoes (or even nice sneakers) these can maintain your dignity, broadcast your cool, and protect your comfort.

Our view would be that “extra-casual” business casual would be acceptable if you have to go into the office on a summer weekend. For example, you can probably get away with khakis or cotton trousers — even if normally business casual means dress pants or wool slacks — and a polo shirt. Just err on the side of a shirt with a collar.
We wouldn’t recommend ripped jeans and a t-shirt. You never know what workaholic partner might be prowling the halls on a Sunday afternoon. Rodge Cohen, holla.
But that’s just our view — and maybe we’re out of touch, since we’ve been working from home for the past few years. Feel free to agree or disagree, in the comments.
Update (4:55 PM): Kids these days. They have sexually explicit IM chats on public computers. They enjoy wrastlin’ with the partners. And based on the comments thus far, they wear whatever the heck they want when they go into work on the weekend.

At a major DC firm, I was told by a partner to stop dressing up and just wear jeans on the weekend. And this was when we had client witnesses in the office to prep for a hearing...
In my building, they basically turn off the HVAC over the weekend. So, yeah, I'm wearing proper summer attire and bringing a cooler of Corona.

Respectfully disagree. If I am spending my free time working at the office -- as I often end up doing on weekends -- I will wear whatever I want, including frayed jeans (shredded/totally ripped jeans are just in poor taste, period, although ok if we are talking small naturally worn out areas).
But then again, I work at a west coast law firm where the outfits pictured would be ok for Friday wear (and Thursday wear, too).
I don't plan to work weekends. I feel that if I tell them up front that I won't work past 7pm or on weekends, there shouldn't be a problem.

Take pride in being an adult. Always wear a suit to work, regardless of the day or season. Buy a couple of linen suits, have them tailored, and stop trying to look like a child. Try to cultivate adult style, rather than regressing to the slovenly, redneck mean.

i usually wear a suit to work. i store the suits/shirts in a closet in my office, and i come and go in shorts. (we have a cleaners in the lobby - great system - the clothes never leave work). I have a lock on my office door and can change in there. However, i fear the office across the street is beginning to tire of seeing me wandering my office in my undies.
I've been cutting out the pockets of my pants for years in order to shoot some pool when the mood strikes and staying on the right side of the dress code during the workweek, however, on the weekends, when I just wear shorts, I've found that hiking up the leg works just fine. . .
I have a better question: Ever come in on a weekend and find 2 partners making out who were both married to other people? I thought that was hot and gross at the same time. Luckily they did not notice me walking by their door. Pretty stupid considering I was not the only one who would come in.

I'm at S&C, and I've never seen anyone dress up for weekend work. Tshirts, shorts, jeans, and PJ bottoms (on the ladies) are pretty common.
I'm in my second year, and I've worked only one weekend day since I arrived. Granted, I'm not in NYC (though we are on the $160k scale), but that just means I'd get a crappy bonus regardless of whether I worked weekends.

Granted, I work in Houston, but I come into work wearing shorts and a t-shirt on the weekends. As others have mentioned, the fact that the a/c isn't on is reason enough most of the year. I've come in before heading out of town for the A&M game that weekend wearing my game attire. To the extent people are here, I think they appreciate the fact that I haven't shaved and am not there to impress, but rather there to make the firm money and get the work done.

No one cares what you wear to work on the weekend, just that you were there if your firm is into facetime. At my firm, being physically present on the weekend may actually scream INCOMPETENT TECHNOLOGY AT HOME; LOSER. Just wear layers in case the AC is off or, alternatively, blasting.
I refuse to have internet at home as it prevents the indiscriminate assignment of last-minute or "emergency" assignments that can really wait until Monday.
Look as greasy, unshaven, unwashed and rumpled as possible so it is clear to everyone that you have zero time to sleep or bathe because all you do is work.

the problem with dressing really casually on the weekend at work is that you will inevitably run into the most hard-*ssed partner while you are there and he may no ascribe to your belief that the weekend is "my time" so you should be able to wear whatever you want. my view is, why risk undermining the image you project of yourself during the rest of the week just in order to be slightly more comfortable on the occassional Sat/Sun that you have to be in the office? Suck it up and dress like the professional you are paid to be.

No. There are uptight people everywhere, but I've noticed fewer of them out here than when I was in Chicago (never worked in NY).
I throw away all stained t-shirts (unless they have sentimental value), and generally don't wear shorts as a rule (I'm in NorCal), so it's not an issue. Anyway, I feel lucky to work at a firm where I can be in jeans and (decent-looking/not too trendy) untucked polo or t-shirt and out-dress the partners Th/F through the weekend.

I personally do not care what people where on the weekend. I just don't see what is so incredibly uncomfortable about showering and wearing business casual clothes. To be honest, most nice casual clothes are not too far off from business casual to begin with, so I really don't see what you are gaining by switching it up when you come into the office on the weekend, except to reassure yourself (falsely) that the weekend is really "your time." If that makes you feel better, great. I am just saying that in many 55 yr olds' eyes, you look no different from their f-up college student children when you dress sloppy, and this may not be a good thing for you.

7:40, How do you know that weekends are occasional? That's not the case depending upon who you work for. For me it's a full weekend or two per month (and facetime matters--the corner office doesn't take kindly to people working from home during daylight hours)--it's not like it's once/year.
Know what? The work gets done just as well, even if he and I have t-shirts on and a beer or three on our desks. It's not quite being out on the boat, but it's a hell of a lot better atmosphere than it would be if we were wearing ties.
The same rules apply equally on weekends and weekdays: (1) wear whatever the partners wear, (2) do not smell, (3) no rips, tears, holes, or mystery stains, and (4) if you're wearing something completely different from everyone else in the place, then you look unprofessional. im in a business attire every day of the year firm and it does not bother me, as i have no problem with suit and tie every day. however i totally understand those that despise it and would never do it and on the weekend especially

I seriously doubt the partners I work for are judging me on what I wear to the office on the weekends. First of all, those guys don't even bother showing up most of the time. That's what they pay me for. Second, the people who are here don't give a flying tinker's damn. That said, jeans/cargo shorts and polo shirt are perfectly acceptable. I've worn warm-ups and sweatshirts on occassion too.
If a partner is judging you on what you are wearing on the weekends (as long as it is not overtly sloppy), that partner (a) has too much free time and (b) is an unbelievable doucheclown. I'd be polishing my resume.

Unplanned sleepover at Friday night date's place. Saturday a.m. get a call on my cell phone (pre-Blackberry era) that client wants to file a TRO and I need to get to office stat.
Date's apartment about 10 minutes from office. My place about 20 minutes from date's apt (the other direction).
Weighed the hour plus time to go home, change, and go to work against being there in 10 minutes and went with the Saturday walk of shame. Date did not own a hairbrush (WTF?), so also had delightful bedhead until I got to my gym bag in office.
Partner could not have cared less.
If you really need to run, do it at the gym inside the building/take a shower before you leave, so people don't need to stand next to you in the elevator while you're sweating.
The gym in our building has a separate entrance where you can go in/work out/take a shower/exit. Shower facilities at work are amazing. No more running home to shower before a date and even if you do come in hung over, just grab a shower and no one would know the difference.
Why go in on weekends anyway? Do you really aspire to the workaholic life ? Do you want to subcontract the raising of your children to somebody you wouldn't trust with your Beemer keys ? Take your big check, get out of debt, stay off the consumerism/debt treadmill, put $ away and figure out what life YOU want, not what your class cohort has chosen.
I was already debt free, with a modest lifestyle, when, two months after my firm of 20 years (and 30 attorneys) merged with a 300+ attorney firm, I told the new managing partner I really wasn't interested in being his partner. I don't think anybody ever said that to him before.
I have downsized my career to my job. I'm now working part time for the merged firm-MY CHOICE. Since I'm very profitable, the HR people and bean counters are at bay--at least for now.
I don't give a rat's behind about office politics. I'm getting some static, mostly from people who are workaholics- I guess turning in my Blackberry and changing my cell nunber was too much for some of them; the new firm was insistent on embedding my cell number in every email. Now, the only people who have the number are two who know what an emergency isn't.
If I wanted to be on call for assholes 24/7, I'd have become a proctologist.
NYSouthernGirl... thanks for the tip, but if my firm/building had a gym, I probably wouldn't have asked. Showers, yes. But you have to get there somehow from the ground floor, and walkinb up 25 flights aint the way.

The thing that impresses me about double, triple, and quadruple postings is that there are so many people posting on here. It's refreshing to know that it's not just the same 10 of us everyday.
This thread is hilarious. I am a female equity partner, 50s. If you work for me and are in on the weekends the only thing that is compulsory is (a) underwear (preferably covered by clothes of some kind) and (b) a shower if you are anywhere in my vicinity. The chances of me actually seeing you are pretty minimal though as I have been into the office on a weekend maybe once a year in recent years (I'd have to be looking for some very old files or something to need to be in).
In the 1980s we used to wear jeans when working at the weekend, and get looked at askance if work extended through the Monday morning. I still have the pink boots I used to wear (with pants!) if asked to work on holidays, to show that I knew it was supposed to be a day off. I thought those days were long gone...

It's weekend. And it's summer. So simply it suggest that one should wear clothes and apparels which she feels comfortable of wearing. And this does not limit him to experiment a little bit, ready to take on a little unwind in a bar.
