Lawyerly Lairs: The McGraths' Home IS A Castle

Thomas McGrath Diahn McGrath estate.jpgA picture is worth a thousand words, so we'll keep this brief. From a tipster: "Look at this place. The estate of a Simpson Thatcher partner:"

For extensive photos of "Eastfair" -- the McGraths' baronial mansion and grounds, which hosted their daughter's recent NYT-featured wedding -- check out New York Social Diary.

Although the parents of the bride, Diahn Williams McGrath and retired Simpson partner Thomas McGrath, are both lawyers -- and very successful ones, judging from that pile o' bricks -- their daughter and her husband are not attorneys. So the newlyweds weren't eligible for consideration in Legal Eagle Wedding Watch, which has a one-lawyer-spouse minimum.

P.S. This is just their country place. They also have an apartment on Fifth Avenue.

Update: Via a commenter, see here for more details about Eastfair Castle. "The castle sat on 66 acres, had two tennis courts, one indoor and one outdoor. There was a beautiful inground pool with a view to Connecticut. I believe it was 1972 when he died, the house was sold to his close friend, Diane [sic] Williams."

Being a partner was better back in the day.

You could earn enough $$$ to buy a place like this, AND you were leaving the office at 6 p.m.

It's not like that any more.

There is not one brown face in the entire photo album of the wedding. FIRST to say that these people are crack-assed crackers.

Um, the articles state that the wedding took place at Eastfair, the estate of IBM heir Sherman Fairchild, so it's not a Simpson partner's house.

This isn't a partner's house you clown. My friend got married there.

The wedding was held at Eastfair in Lloyd Neck. The estate was originally built by inventor and IBM heir Sherman Fairchild who was a personal friend of the McGraths (they purchased the property after his death in 1971).

so there..

"The Rev. Rosemary Suozzi Lloyd, a Unitarian Universalist minister, officiated at the home of the bride's family in Lloyd Neck, New York. Mrs. Lloyd is the sister of Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi who is a friend of the bride’s parents."

In addition to what 12:09 points out, look at the NYT wedding announcement:

"The Rev. Rosemary Suozzi Lloyd, a Unitarian Universalist minister, officiated at THE HOME OF THE BRIDE'S FAMILY in Lloyd Neck, N.Y."

Eastfair is in Lloyd Neck:

Is this really PPP from STB? Or could it be family money?

Getting married in your parents' back yard? How tacky.

Neither the bride nor bridegroom has an impressive resume.

Someone explain to me the process for getting into NYT, focusing on the following:

(1) Do you apply?

(2) Do you have to live in NYC? (the bride/groom here don't, but the STB dad does)

(3) Do you have to be rich?

I don't get it. It's so elitist and lame. Someone please convince me otherwise.

Look at all the bad plastic surgery in those photos. The money, the botox, the obvious sycophantery--those photos make me worry for the future of man.

Big deal. Richard Rosenbaum, President of Greenberg Traurig recently bought an apartment at the Plaza for $8.7 million (that's in addition to his house in Scarsdale). See link: http://www.observer.com/2007/over-weekend?observer_most_read_tabs_tab=2

12:38: You're kidding right? That castle would go for about $30 mil. Get a clue.

avatar
21 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, July 11, 2008 12:43 PM

12:38, $8.7M is not really that impressive by Manhattan real estate standards. Judging from the acreage shown in the photos, this North Shore estate is well over $20M.

I agree with 12:15. Though maybe partner money in 1979 could buy something like this. It certainly couldn't now. Hedgefunders to castles!

Oh, my. What an unfortunate looking couple! The family donkey was very attractive, and the house looked superb, however.

avatar
25 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, July 11, 2008 12:48 PM

Something tells me that this guy did not make all his money in the legal business. Even a Simpson partner doesn't have the coin to buy a $30mm house without other sources of income.

"Neither the bride nor bridegroom has an impressive resume."

I would disagree (the groom…graduated from Johns Hopkins and is 29, is a deputy director at the Pentagon where he works for the Undersecretary of Defense…), but getting major wedding coverage in the NYT is not about schools or GPA (sorry).

A couple quotes from the linked article might bring this home to you:

“The bride’s father…who is, like his wife, a friend of this reporter…is on the BOARD OF THE NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC and the president of the American Austrian Foundation…are VERY ACTIVE IN NEW YORK SOCIAL LIFE, and very gracious hosts to a WIDE VARIETY OF PROMINENT NEW YORKERS, at dinners in the Fifth Avenue apartment.”

In short, the groom’s parents are rich and socially connected, and that is why the wedding has a huge spread in the NYT. It has everything to do with the social prominence of the bride or groom’s parents.

The social pages are NOT a meritocracy.

So, how can one apply to get into the social pages? One cannot. You are either in and rich, or you are not.

Compared to this, I'd say closer to $50+ million.

of course at least 50 million. it is 66 f'ing acres!! assuming it belongs to them, which does not seem so clear, either they bought it years back when a million really meant something (of course it was many times that over) or money from somewhere else. even with stb senior partner money in todays world its just not enough with all the hedgefunders and financiers etc. or maybe they actually kneew previous owner.
but in truth who ther f cares, whats it got to do with me or you!

avatar
29 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, July 11, 2008 12:58 PM

PS: This, obviously, is not "partner money".

One does not buy a $50 million estate or get on the board of the NY Philharmonic (meaning, that you both have a social pedigree AND give more than $1 million a year to that organization) with “partner money”.

This is real wealth. Billionaire money.

There are some ridiculously wealthy guests in there too. I am guessing this is not purely money from a legal career.

Mrs. McGrath was a somewhat successful actress in the 60s and 70s. Look on IMDB for Diahn Williams.

Probably still some family money there, but a few hundred grand wisely invested in 1970 would be some serious coin today.

Uh....what on earth is the bride's mother wearing? It looks like a bedspread from IKEA. I like the bride's dress though.

Scary. The bride is fugly - the donkey is more attractive. The bride's mother looks like she's already embalmed. The guests look like perfect candidates to be in an ad for "The Decline and Fall of Western Civilization."

If this is supposed to be the apex of "white" society, God help us all.

the McGraths bought the house almost 37 years ago. There wasn't a piece of real estate for sale on Long Island for even ONE MILLION back then. NOT ONE. If they paid 300 grand, the seller was doing good. Big House; lot to heat, lot to maintain, much of which the couple did themselves. They work, always have worked. Also never heard them make a nasty remark about anyone who had more than they did either.

Hey 11:59,

I'll supply you one black person to attend every rich white wedding on Long Island if you'll supply one white person to every black Baptist wedding in Alabama.

Or is your point that because it's a rich wedding they have the money to pay a black person to come?

As a PSA to you asstards - even at most nominally one tier lockstep firms some partners are banking 5-10 million a year, while others are living on coolie wages of 500K...hard as it may be to believe, the stars of big law care about being paid for performance.

If you want to know where the money comes from, I will give you one clue- it's not him. It's from her, and it's not from her blood family- let's put it that way. She was involved with men before her husband.

She was the lover of the former owner. He gifted her with the castle and a ton of money. She then married her current husband and they had their daughter.
