Legal Eagle Wedding Watch: Couple of the Month for June

LEWW champagne2.jpgIt’s nearly August, and we still haven’t crowned ATL’s Legal Eagle Couple of the Month for June. Time to vote!

As we did last month, we’ve added a third couple to round out the choices. We thought that Mary Fan and Dean Kawamoto were the month’s strongest runners-up, so we’ve included them for your consideration. Last month, the “bonus couple” waltzed away with the title; let’s see if Mary and Dean can pull off a similar upset.

If you’re ready to vote, here’s the poll. To read more about the couples, click on the link below.

1. Kristen Eichensehr and Richard Ré
(Buy them a coffee server.)

The Case:
- Extremely strong, eerily tandem educational credentials here. Kristen and Richard met as undergrads at Harvard. They both have master’s degrees from Cambridge. They both graduated from Yale Law School in May.
- They’ll continue to be joined at the hip post-JD, with feeder clerkships on the DC Circuit. She’s clerking for Merrick Garland; he’s clerking for Brett Kavanaugh. Surely his-n-hers SCOTUS slots are within their reach!
- Richard is from Metairie, Louisiana, the birthplace of Reese Witherspoon. Kristen is from Williamsport, Pennsylvania, the birthplace of Little League baseball.

The Case Against:

- A picture would have been really nice here. The lean write-up gives us their impressive credentials, but no insight into whether you’d want to be seated next to them at dinner.

Glover-Ho.jpg2. Maria Glover and Derek Ho
(Buy them a gravy boat.)

The Case:
- Oh, mercy — where do we start? We’ve been waiting all season for a prestige-orgy of this magnitude. The basics: Two lawyers. The bride was summa at the University of Tennessee and got her JD at Vanderbilt. The groom was magna at both Harvard and HLS.
- Derek clerked for Judge Michael Boudin of the First Circuit and thereafter ascended to the chambers of Justice David H. Souter (note that this in no way changes our assessment of Boudin as a mid-range feeder). Derek is now a partner at Kellogg Huber, the ultra-prestigious DC litigation boutique.
- Maria is a star in her own right, having just completed a clerkship for Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson III of the Fourth Circuit. She’s also a former Miss Knoxville!
- Justice Souter himself was present at the wedding and had the immense honor of being shown to his seat by ATL’s own David Lat, a groomsman (college roommate of the groom).
- We’re lukewarm about the race-based acronym some ATL commenters will doubtless bestow on this couple. Nonetheless, we were pleased when a Google search for the term led us to this.

The Case Against:
- “Ms. Glover … is keeping her name.” We dare say.

Fan-Kawamoto.jpg3. Mary Fan and Dean Kawamoto

The Case:
- Another week, another double-YLS couple (unlike our previous LEWW winners, these two actually met at Yale). Mary was magna at the University of Arizona, and Dean graduated with high distinction from Berkeley. Both also have master’s degrees from Cambridge.
- Mary, who clerked for their officiant, Ninth Circuit Judge John T. Noonan, will start this fall as an assistant professor of law at American University. Dean will be working at the DC office of Boies, Schiller & Flexner.

The Case Against:
- Mary and Dean have already attracted some attention in the ATL comments section (see, for example, here, here, here, and here, and also this commenter, who concluded, “I wish their marriage luck, although I would not have sex with either of them”) We think Mary and Dean are both brilliant and adorable (admittedly, we have a soft spot for double-YLS couples from their class). We’ll concede, however, that Mary’s description of her beloved to the NYT as “a little Ken doll” was regrettable.

Kristen Eichensehr and Richard Ré didn't ruin their chances by providing a picture on the internet for Lat to find. They have my vote for not making me look at their ugly mugs.

Glover clerked for Wilkinson...she oughta go to SCOTUS, only logical. Then they would be a hyper-prestigious couple.

This column makes fun of people for going to GULC and then lets the University of Arizona pass without comment?

Oh, Arizona - MAGNA? Hoop-de-do, man. That's like putting lipstick on a pig.

I know it was Arizona undergrad and that makes some difference. I'm just saying the standards seem inconsistent.

I knew Dean and Mary at YLS. Dean was cool, super-laid back cat, Mary however was a little . . . eccentric. She published an op-ed in the Yale Daily News (fall 2001, I think) about how all white men have an asian fetish and want to touch her hair.

I'm voting for the first couple because they were kind enough not to force us to look at a picture of them.

Derek and Maria are quite the prestige orgy indeed. Not to mention that Lat was a groomsman and Souter was in attendance. It's SCOTUS-approved!

As for couple number 1, his and hers diplomas are so tacky. And as for couple number 3, well, we've heard recently how much ATL commenters love American University.

HIS and HER diplomas--better than HIS and HER towels..................not tacky at all

You guys should just start setting people up so that you will have even more control over who marries who and you can be in all the weddings!
