Evaluating the tone of the emails as well some of the more truthful sounding comments, my hypothesis is:

TT probably had an extra cell phone without service that was lying around (as most people do when they upgrade to a new phone when the old is still functional) and responded to ED's request to borrow a phone on the listserve. This sounds like something a decent 3L human being would do for a 1L at his/her law school.

ED decides to hold onto the phone past her "few weeks" request and doesn't return the phone even though TT has requested the phone through 3-4 nice email requests. Then ED takes off for Rome for the summer without returning the phone.

Now TT wants to get her phone or its replacement value before she leaves Ann Arbor now that she doesn't need to study for the bar exam any longer (this sounds rational to me) and so asks more forcefully for her phone or replacement value. ED decides to cuss out TT for having the gall to say anything in strong terms (which ED deserved, and more) because ED "don't take no shit from nobody" because she's too damn good for that.

People like ED piss me off and its people like DR MICHIGAN who always make excuses for people like ED.

TT comes across as very polite and reasonable in this exchange.

I cannot understand how anyone would take the side of ED. I have a temper, but I have never written such an offensive e-mail in my entire life.

Every school has its unhappy, crazy, or even "stupid" people (often the smartest of people lack common sense.) TT did the right thing because that's how we operate at Michigan. We know we have to work together in the future. We help each other. We trust each other. Everyone gets screwed once in a while, that's life. Now, ED's a lot less likely to get help in the future (and believe me, she will ask) and TT is probably going to get her phone back. I'm sure there are plenty of people who know ED and TT who will ask.

Alternatively, perhaps TT understood that ED was quite self centered and would not be able to handle a demand that contained an implied accusation [you've converted my property] and would react as she did. In TT's previous attempts to reclaim her telephone, TT could have been attempting to forestall what she knew could be a violent confrontation.

Heck, after the first couple of attempts to politely reclaim her telephone, TT could have unconsciously set this up to play out just like this.

Finally, except for the bashers and trashers, the discussion is kind of fun.
