Summer Associate of the Day: Doing the Conde Nastie?

Skadden Arps Slate Meagher Flom LLP new logo.jpgSetting aside the Sapphic Smooch, it’s been a slow summer in terms of juicy summer-associate scandals. As a result, we’re forced to bring you a story that may be apocryphal.

Here it is. It supposedly took place in the sleek-and-sexy offices of Skadden, housed in the celebrated Conde Nast Building at Four Times Square. Does being in close proximity to Vogue-visiting supermodels make people horny?

From a tipster (but not at Skadden; it came through the grapevine):

Does Skadden normally make its summers share office space with associates?

A Skadden associate walked into his office, which he shares with a summer associate, and caught the summer having sex with another summer. The associate was upset because he wanted to do work, and warned the summer to lock the door in the future. Both summers are not expected to be no-offered because of this.

Give a careful read to that last sentence, with all its double negatives. The upshot: nobody is getting in trouble over this. As a certain ATL commenter might say, “No big deal.”

We did a bit of fact-checking. Sadly, the full-time and summer associates we contacted at SASMF said they hadn’t heard anything about this. But they did confirm that regular / full-time associates share offices with summer associates. (The theory is that this arrangement helps to give summers a realistic sense of a regular associate’s day-to-day work life.)

We’re unsure about how true this story is. If you can confirm (or deny), feel free to email us.

Some of you will express annoyance at the possibly apocryphal nature of this story. To make it up to you, we’re going to pass along a very similar summer-associate story, from our former firm, that IS true (albeit old).

Check back for it, later today, or tomorrow.

Update: That story is now posted here.

P.S. In case you’re wondering, this is the story that we alluded to in the “Update” appended to this post. But we were amused by how many emails we received from people who thought we were talking about a different story. Apparently the Skadden summer retreat was one happening place….

Need some clarification about the two summers: male/female; male/male or female/female. If you are making up a story, might as well make it hot lesbian sex.

Details from the Skadden summer retreat are needed.

Stop being such a tease Lat!

Also, summers sharing offices with associates? Ick. Yet another reason that NYC sucks.

These summers should be no offered for not asking the associate to join in. If you are going to have sex in space you share with someone, it is polite and proper to allow them to get off as well.

Gentlemen at my preparatory academy often engaged in inappropriate behavior as summer associates, with the consequences of their actions remaining mysterious due to indecipherable narrative containing a double negative at frequent intervals. It was not a conspicuous event.

AFAIK this is an urban legend--I summered at Skadden last year and heard this story go around both about Skadden and about another V10 firm, with only minor variations in details. No one actually knew anyone who had any personal knowledge of this supposed event.

And what idiot has sex in an office he shares with someone without even locking the door?

Oh and the sharing office with associate part can be great. Worked pretty well for me--I was going out to dinners and lunches almost every day and learned more about day to day life at the firm from him than anywhere else. And sharing an office with a mid-level attorney really did show me what life was like at the firm, since there was no chance to "sanitize" things for me. When I picked Skadden I had sharing the summer office as a downside, but in the long run it was a bonus.

Oh and just to clarify it's only summers that share offices--once you're full time you get your own.

Of course if you get stuck with an insane officemate it stinks, but the career office did pretty well with that--most hyper Type A lawyers got put with hyper Type A summers.

25 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, July 31, 2008 2:29 PM

umm, how is sharing an office with an associate bad? You actually get to see what firm life is really like (generally more bad than good), get to ask questions all the time, have a higher level guy to be friends with when you start, have an extra opportunity for lunch, and just generally be social with someone other than the summers.

The one downside is if you are really busy, the noise can be distracting. Other than that, great. Never got a single comment about the fact that I surfed the web quite a bit at times (if i had a spell of no work even after begging a few people for work).

But I forgot, laywers are anti-social, entitled assholes. Seriously, go work in the non lawyer world and deal with working in a damn cubicle. Then you will appreciate having even half an office.

"Both summers are not expected to be no-offered because of this."

Lay off, this is not that bad a sentence. Take out the negatives and you get: "Both summers are expected to get an offer because of this." That's obviously not what's being said here.

No one who's criticized has offered a rewrite. How about: Neither summer is expected to be no-offered because of this.

Still a double negative, but not as conspicuous. But I do not think it is not a good sentence to begin with.
