How Not To Spend the Week Before the Bar Exam?
Ultimate fighting isn’t exactly a sport that’s on our radar. Also known as mixed martial arts, it involves a cage and a lot of grappling, kicking, and punching. Apparently, it has a rapidly growing fan base; a recent Rolling Stone article called it “the next Nascar” and “boxing’s replacement.”
Last year, the Minnesota City Pages wrote a profile of mixed martial arts fighting champ and University of Minnesota law school student, Nick Thompson. A tipster sent us a link to one of Thompson’s recent bouts. Based on this Sports Illustrated article, it sounds like it was more of a rout than a bout:
If nothing else, Shields’ 63-second destruction of Nick Thompson, a quality welterweight with 12 consecutive wins under his belt coming into Saturday, should give Shields enough gravitas that he’s brought into the discussion of top 170-pound fighters in the game…Included in the 29-year-old San Franciscan’s tally is Saturday’s domination of Thompson (36-10-1), which saw Shields land an early takedown, move to mount and lock in a one-armed guillotine from the top…
“I think I’m one of the best in the world, and Jake treated me like a little kid out there,” said Thompson, a law school graduate who faces the bar exam next week. “That’s the best mount I’ve ever felt.”
Even though Thompson lost, we’re still impressed that he’s fighting in cage matches the week before the bar exam — guess he’s not very anxious about the test. On the other hand, who wouldn’t take a break from studying for “the best mount” ever?

"That's the best mount I've ever felt."
another charney thread?
hsgfsh
High praise, considering he comes from San Francisco....
I tend to believe that athletes that have competed at high levels within their sport have less anxiety regarding preparation for the bar. It's just one more thing you train for. Thompson is probably scoring in the 99th percentile on all those MBE tests from BarBri and PMBR. If not, he can always put an arm lock on the proctors to give him more time on the exam.
BAR EXAM :(
Mmm muscles and a beard. Yum.
The comma placed before the dude's name is unnecessary.
So is the picture.
Since when is a comma not necessary for an appositive?
I beg to differ, 7. The picture is highly necessary. You need to be able to recognize this dude in case you ever go up against him in an emotionally tense legal proceeding where fisticuffs might break out (say a Texas deposition).
So, Jake "treated [him] like a little kid" by giving him "the best mount [he's] ever felt."
There are layers and layers of damage to be analyzed here . . .
8: read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apposition
Ultimate fighters have super-hot bods.
Unfortunately, the fighting often leaves their faces undesirable. Broken noses, cauliflower ears, messed up teeth, etc.
But then, as Jack from Will & Grace says, you can always cover a face with a cute hat or a paper bag.
I'd kick his ass.
8, you are a moron. Kash, get rid of the comma, and reconsider journalism as a chosen profession.
I'd l<ick his ass.

Wonder if he ever put the Lindquist summer in a full mount
11, apposition? Perhaps "the best mount [he's] ever felt" is a position?
lol @ 15
i completely agree with you #4. i felt a rush finishing up studying like i havent felt since playing ball in college. lets get it on baby.. i am ready!!!!!
Wait...can someone consent to a battery...ah shit, I'm screwed.
Co-sign 7. That's clearly restrictive, not parenthetical.
I watched that fight and it was a thing of beauty. In just over a minute the guy was in a headlock and had to tap out or pass out. His opponent made it look easy but you try put anyone your size, who's puttin up a fight, into a headlock. It's impossible to do by brute force and without chess-like strategy. Great fight. This is why MMA will take over from boxing, who wants to watch 10 rounds of jabs that end in a draw and a lifetime of brain damage? Here, the better fighter can win in a minute by being smart enough to exploit a mistake with deadly effect. That's tricky, that's tough, that's MMA.
How about GSP v. Thomson dude.
MMA is TTT
"That's tricky, that's tough, that's MMA" Hahahahhaha I don't know why but I love that sentence. Hillarious.

I agree that it was one of the most effortless submissions I can remember, against a very well-regarded opponent.
I don't know if MMA will overtake boxing, though, as many people are squeamish with regard to its brutal possibilities. It si more exciting than the 'De la Hoya' jabfests that seem to be infecting boxing (although, the boxing event this weekend was supposed to be great).
So funny. 25 is probably a 260 pound fatty who couldn't climb 2 flights of stairs, yet calls MMA TTT. I'm sure now he'll retort that he's wickedly in shape, etc, etc, but even if he does, he's probably still a wheezy fatty in real life.
MMA = My Mullet is Awesome
HAHAhahaha...me too, 26

I love MMA, but that is hilarious!
Kash, see if you can get an interview with him after he finishes the bar exam. I think it'd be pretty interesting. Not only is he doing this now, but he was also fighting regularly throughout law school.
Guys at my high school used to get mounted before exams all the time, it was no big deal.
Serious question: What happens in MMA if a fighter finds himself in a death grip but refuses to tap out? Can his opponent snap his neck? If so, what would happen to MMA?
@34
He would likely pass out before his neck gets snapped. Going unconscious = fight over. It happens not infrequently.
Kimbo Slice would never lost a fight and probably could pass the MN bar without studying.
That's tricky, that's tough, that's MMA.
Wasn't that the guy at PMBR that got sued?
"That's tricky, that's tough, that's the MBE?"
Thompson can't be the jacked dude in the picture. He's actually known as Nick "The Goat" Thompson. His other pictures show a guy with a shaved head who looks like he's playing a game of pick-up hoops.

34, you do raise an interesting issue that has not been fully addressed by MMA (what should dominant fighter do if losing fighter refuses to tap out when clearly controlled, either in some sort of choke or some sort of "pressure position"- attempting to dislocate an arm, etc.). the short answer is that losing fighter is usually smart enough to know when he is in an unwinnable position, and simply taps out, and if he does not, refs are pretty quick to come in and stop a fight when risk of injury exists or losing fighter unable to defend himself.
28 - I am a former college hoops player, and I am 6-4 220 lbs. MMA is still TTT. Boxing is a real mans sport.
40 STFU - that 169 lb Shields could kick the sh*t out of a boxer your size. Is boxing a real man's sport because they don't let you kick each other, use heavily padded gloves, and pause to let you stand up every time you get knocked down?
The last instruction before a fight is "protect yourself at all times" - a fighter who is no longer protecting himself loses by TKO when the refs stop the fight.
Between "The Goat", a Supreme Court clerkship for Amy Bergquist and the Lindquist summers, it appears that the University of Minnesota and the Minneapolis legal market are keeping ATL in business lately.
boxing mounts MMA any day of the week.
I used to watch boxing with a passion. I've gotten into MMA in the last year and it's much, much better.
The best fighters actually fight eachother on a regular basis, and the combination of light gloves and submissions makes it a lot more exciting.
Until there is co-ed naked MMA, I have no interest.
If you guys want to talk trash to the Goat, he frequents this MMA forum: http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/?go=forum_framed.frame
They also have a "Legalground" on the forum as well.
You've got to ask yourself one question about the bar exam: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?
This picture from the weigh-in really should have been part of Kash's post:

GULC pwns UVA just like Shields pwns Thompson.
Thanks 2:55 for the info.
3:07, I'm not sure asking a question is moronic. I'm pretty sure your response makes you an asshole.
Wait till he's a first year. Only then will he know what it truly means to get mounted.

Watch some MMA. Refs are *extremely* quick to stop fights when the issue is a fully applied hold or consciousness. That said, most MMA fighters know what is an inescapable hold, and they will tap immediately.
Fights simply don't continue when one fighter is helpless.
The whole reason MMA is so much safer than boxing is that the fights end in a hurry. A 63-second match isn't really unheard of and doesn't indicate dominance so much as someone made an early mistake. In boxing, a 63-second match meas a ripoff of a fight where one guy didn't have a chin.
Nick was in my first-year legal writing class section - he won Best Oralist. Of course, he also showed up to oral arguments with his head shaved and a broken nose - hard to argue against a scary-looking guy like that. He's a really nice guy, though.
I assume that is Billy making the "gunch" comment.
