Breaking: Judge Halverson Passes Out; Hearing Postponed

Elizabeth Halverson small Judge Elizabeth Halverson Liz Halverson Above the Law blog.JPGThis just in, from a West Coast tipster who has been following L'Affaire Halverson obsessively:

Halverson passes out at hearing; adjourned due to medical reasons. Based on live observations...

Update: More details from the AP:

A disciplinary hearing for a suspended Nevada state judge has been postponed, after she reported she felt ill.

The Nevada Commission on Judicial Discipline suspended the hearing in its fifth day after Clark County District Court Judge Elizabeth Halverson's lawyer said the diabetic judge experienced a hypoglycemic, or low blood sugar, episode.

The hearing is due to resume next Thursday and Friday in Las Vegas.

Further Update: More from our Halverson-obsessed tipster, after the jump.

Our tipster writes:

The Chairman announced that the commissioners had decided to suspend the proceedings because "clearly" Halverson had suffered "an event" during the proceeding, but before it did so wanted Halverson's consent....

Halverson, who looked subdued, said she suffered a "hypoglycemic" incident. I could not tell if she was faking or what. [She said,] "I kind of feel like I can continue, but on the other hand, people are telling me I don't look so good."

Chairman then comments on how stressful things are and adjourns hearing. Sympathy ploy or the real deal, I could not say.

Isn't she trying to prove she wasn't falling asleep while on the bench? Doesn't really help her case much when she's falling asleep during her hearing.

Falling asleep on the bench is protected by the ADA? Does that mean I can fall asleep at say, client meetings, and the partners won't fire me? Some of those things are really boring and stuff.

I'm thinking ... can't a diabetic pretty much do something like that that on command? I mean - just not eat for a while and then pass out. It's a potential death sentence to be sure - but it's apparent she has not been taking care of herself for years now.

7, if she really had a "low blood sugar episode" today and passed out, I would think that would help her case, not hurt it (i.e., it shows that she might not have been "sleeping" in court).

I refuse to believe that even for a solitary moment, Judge Halverson is doing something other than eating gob-fuls of fried sugar. I therefore submit that she faked the whole thing.

Who among us hasn't allowed himself to grow to epic size, repeatedly fallen asleep on the job, and then used his out-sized dimensions as a claim of disability in order to shed blame for his utter failure as a human being?

Let he who is without such sin cast the first stone...

I am the commenter who has been following the Halverson debacle “obsessively” since March of 2007.

First, as far as I could tell from the CNN live feed, Halverson looked out-of-it when queried by the Commission chairperson on whether she agreed with their unanimous decision to adjourn the hearing based on their finding that “clearly” Halverson suffered a medical “event”.

That said, Halverson is an extremely complex and manipulative person, as possibly evinced by an anonymous comment (No. 251) to the last Halverson post on this site http://abovethelaw.com/2008/08/judge_halverson.php

“Why isn't someone contacting some of her former co-workers at the IRS? I used to work with Elizabeth LaMacchia (Halverson) at the IRS in San Mateo, Ca., and she was an obnoxious person with everyone ( taxpayers, representatives and co-workers.).

“Elizabeth resented anyone that was slender, pretty and married. Elisabeth forced a number of female co-workers to constantly escort her to the restroom on a so called afternoon break . She constantly intimidated CPAs and enrolled agents with her California Bar Association Membership Card; constantly insulted management and anyone with authority; made male co-workers prepare her lunch and "fetch" water for her on a daily basis, and "openly" harassed new trainees assigned to her by the manager.

“Elisabeth made everyone at work suffer for what she perceived as "weight discrimination "by the by the IRS, when they refused to hire her as an attorney. After observing Elisabeth for years as a co-worker, I can believe she used her position as a judge to get even with anyone that crossed her path.

“This is one "jackpot" Las Vegas can keep!”

So, was Halverson faking?

Is commenter 251 lying?

That is part of what makes the story of the 500 pound judge so mesmerizing—especially live.

The hearing will resume next Thursday. CNN LINK (NOTE LAST DIGIT VARIES FROM 2 TO 3):

I'm an attorney in Vegas (recent admittee) and have followed the Halverson case as well. Back when she was elected, I do not remember seeing a single picture of her on any campaign material. I'm all for protecting the rights of those that need protecting, but why should the rights of the people to have a fair trial be undercut by the requirements of the Court, as a public entity, to accommodate Halverson not caring for herself and causing 'diabetic episodes' in the middle of hearings and trials, as she claims? If she knows she has to do certain things to remain alert, upright, and alive, I think she should at least take on some of that responsibility. I have family members with diabetes that have to watch their diet and monitor their blood sugar multiple times per day - and they do it. "Judge" Halverson should have to do the same and not claim that she is being discriminated against because she is disabled. She is the one that is not taking care of her own self (either diabetic episodes or not enough sleep) and caused problems for those present in her courtroom.
What a HUGE loser she is. I don't care how smart she is, or how smart people say she is, if she doesn't care about herself and she does not have people that love her who care about (or for) her, then she should not expect the public to do so.

She didn't actually pass out. There are plenty of 0Ls and pre-1Ls that have watched this since monday religiously on CNN and LasVegasnow.com feeds. There was an event, but it occured during a break, to which the then came back to go on lunch break. She came back and was apparently too out of it to continue, but was able to do interviews. If you can deal with us 0Ls and other that may not understand the legal aspect as well, in the off-topic forum of top-law-schools.com, there is a running thread with plenty of info on it.

It was a very convenient attack, one which occurred right after the judge chastised her for not even contacting over half of her witness list by the day she was supposed to start to bring them in. Of course she told the judge it was his fault because she had to be at court 9-5. It's not like they don't break near constantly or anything.

I don't know what she was thinking though. If she wasn't faking then it's clear she is incapable of running a court, if she is then she is lacks the morals required by the office. Either way it's lose lose for her.

It was another one of those days.

Toilet is still clogged, coffee sucked again this morning, and I worked from 8am til midnight. At least I will make hours this year... by about the first week of September.

I ended up not shitting in my neighbor's helmet. Instead, I went to sleep with a pulsating star, held it in through morning oatmeal and shitty coffee, and then shotcreted the back wall of a Merrill Lynch toilet. All in all, I feel bad for the janitor who has to clean that unholy conflagration, but--sigh--what was I supposed to do? When you work 8am to midnight everyday of the week, when do you have time to pick up a plunger?

Capped the day/night off with a DiGiorno pizza and a 15 minute highlight/recap of the Olympic opening ceremonies. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like there are too many countries in the world. If 200+ countries have enough wherewithal and resources to send athletes to the Olympics in Beijing, we need consolidation. I'd like to be down to say, 15 countries, by 2015.

I live a glorious and celebrated life.

I sure hope and pray that the people in her district do not vote for her in Tues. election. She should not be in the run off or in any election imo. What a terrible excuse for a professional person. Where is the Nevada Bar? I know diabetics that work very hard to never use their disability as an excuse and then this mean angry unhappy woman tries to defend herself with her lack of control. Diabetes is all about control and clearly she has none. I do not think that all the complaints are fake and being paranoid is not the right mind set to be fair and impartial. She clearly mocks the court every time she opens her mouth. Out out ......spot.

Suffered a "medical event" ? Yeah about 3oo lbs ago. I bet the staff run when she appears at the Horn n Hoof Buffet. They know from experience that they will have to move quickly to keep the trays replenished. Disgraceful. What is it about America that people get to this obscene size and we are expected to accommodate them? No where else does this happen.
