It’s puzzling that lawyers have a reputation as a bunch of thieving shysters. After all, we have to prove our character and fitness before joining the profession. Unlike, say, doctors, lawyers’ unique responsibilities demand high moral standards as well as professional skill. Only the pure in heart can be allowed to carry the briefcase.
Yes, 3Ls, for a mere $815 (0r more), expert bureaucrats will judge your moral merit. Along with the occasional white supremacist, state C&F committees weed out sinners great and small. Unpaid parking tickets? They’re on it. Remember that security deposit on your 1999 summer share? They do.
Maybe you didn’t think that a drunken tailgate from sophomore year would come back to haunt you. But we’ve already heard from several C&F veterans about the long-forgotten dramas that stood between them and their legal dreams:
I worked as a paralegal at a small New York firm in between college and law school. After six months, I got sick of picking up sushi and making copies, so I quit. The firm was furious that I was leaving, and they threatened to do whatever it took to keep me out of the bar. Sure enough, three and a half years later, they told California that I was a liar and not to be trusted. California admitted me anyway. Later in my career, I moved to New York. This firm again told the bar that I was a liar and made as much trouble as they could — almost six years after I quit.
I skipped a lot of class in high school and ended up with a bunch of Fs. I graduated from college with honors, then made it to a top-6 law school, with years of work experience along the way. I was 26 when I took the bar. C&F gave me huge problems over my high school academic record. They made me write a long apology and promise never to do it again. For real.

Big law firms don't learn paralegals' names, but small firms do. I could imagine a small firm being mad if he/she left suddenly, so they had to quickly find someone else to get their sushi and make their photocopies. Its still hard to imagine them carrying a grudge for years afterwards though, unless there is more going on here that what the narrator is telling us -- paralegal somehow embarassed lawyers, love affair between paralegal and lawyer turned sour, something like that.

Putting the contest aside, I recently had my character&fitness interview in Manhattan...was told beforehand that such interviews were a joke. Got there and was grilled pretty tough on a false arrest as a juvenile (charges never even brought), one parking ticket, and for testifying against my own assailant in a criminal case. Some of these interviewers are power hungry losers so please be forewarned...

25, what was the result? Did you have to do anything special other than the interview? I can't believe that they grilled you over a parking ticket. I've had a ton of parking tickets, I've paid them all, but I've had a bunch. Being questioned for C&F because of parking tickets seems really obnoxious.

Character and fitness was a joke. I failed to see how an arrest for underage drinking really reflects on anyone's fitness (more just on luck). The person I spoke with seemed nice but he seemed to realize that the whole thing was b.s.

Talking about ethics, I would appreciate if the NY BOLE took down their twelve year archive of Bar results. They are the only state that leaves the results up for longer than a few examination cycles and as such, the information always come up whenever there is a google search of my name. It's not a huge deal but I think that is a violation of my privacy and I don't see why they do it. Someone I haven't spoken to in awhile geting to know that I passed in July of 2004 doesn't really benefit them.

Shyster is a Yiddish word--i.e. was coined by Jews, and not by others to disparage Jews.
C&F gave me a hard time because I was a manager at a candy company called the Sweet Shop, which was accidentally named Sweat Shop in my paperwork. Anyway, I explained the situation and they were cool for a while until they found out that the candy was manufactured by laborers in a Jersey basement who were paid 1 dollar an hour. But it wasn't the horrors of the labor situation that really set them off, it was when I started singing "Ironic" by Allanis Morissette. Moral of the story: C&F hates Canadians.

There was no point in using the word. It added nothing. If this was a stylistic flourish, well, it failed. There is a difference between being overly P.C. and smart and educated enough to realize that some words while okay in certain contexts are reasonably offensive to some people. They may be a little over sensitive, but they also have a point. To not even understand this possibility or to not care (worse) is a serious problem for someone who expects to work with words to reach a public audience. There really is no excuse for the sloppiness. Clearly this was thrown together at the last minute (and seems like it was late,) but that is not an excuse. Bush league job.

I went through the dot-com bust and lost about everything I (previously) owned, and had just started turning things around 3-4 years later before entering law school. My C&F interview centered around how it was that I had all these assets back in 2000-2001 yet now I didn't. I wanted to yell 'DUH!' but had to remind myself that these two particular members been working for the State Bar for the past 15 years and were insulated from the economy so didn't know that there was a dot-com crash, let alone how to use their Apple Newton.

The only anti-semitic thing about this site is its spell check. If you type in "jewish" it says its misspelled, right click it and it gives you the word newish, not Jewish. It does do the capitalization for "christian", but thats probably because it is a name as well.
My C&F inteviewers gave me a hard time because I got busted selling a couple of pills of Ecstasy. C'mon, its not like I hacked somebody's foot off to exhtort money. If you are trying to be modest and don't want to give the name of your prestigious school, say something like "top-10" or "top-20" law school. Saying "top-6" or "top-13" implies that you are obsessed enough with the rankings to know whether your school was 5, 6, or 7. Which itself implies that you are obsessed with how well ranked your law school is.

Last time I checked, Bill Clinton, John Edwards, and most or all of the lawyers who represent Guantanamo detainees passed the "character & fitness" evaluation. It is sad (though unsurprising, I guess) that F&D feels that she needs to cater to the far-left contingent of ATL's readership to win this competition.

you will only have problems with C&F if you fail to disclose something which needs to be disclosed (e.g. a mere arrest) AND they find out somehow. even if you are convicted of a crime, unless it goes to your moral turpitude or honesty, you will NOT fail C&F.
