Legal Eagle Wedding Watch: July’s Couple of the Month

LEWW champagne2.jpgGood news for Legal Eagle Wedding Watchers: LEWW will be returning to a more frequent and timely posting schedule! Beginning next week, we’ll once again feature our gold standard of three fabulous couples per week to ogle and dissect.

We’ll bring you more hot August weddings tomorrow and Friday, but for now, it’s time for our readers to vote on a Couple of the Month for July. Although their write-up wasn’t in the NYT and therefore didn’t run in our normal LEWW column, we’re including celebrity professors Samantha Power and Cass Sunstein, whose union merited LEWW bonus coverage last month (as well as a shout-out in the Washington Post’s Reliable Source column).

For more information on these newlyweds, click on the link below. When you’re ready to vote, here’s the poll:

Silver-Lichter.jpg
1. Cecilia Silver and Jason Lichter
(Buy them a Wii.)
The Case:
- We’ll begin with the bride and groom’s educational credentials, where we observe a rare H-Y-P trifecta, with a little Oxford action on the side. Jason contributes the H and the Y (law school and undergrad, respectively), with Cecilia providing the P (undergrad; she also has a master’s from Oxford). The only stinkweed in this bouquet of Ivy perfection is Ceclia’s law degree, which is from lowly Georgetown.
- They’re co-workers (at Weil, Gotshal & Manges). No details on their courtship, but we’d like to think they’ve been naughty in the copy room at least once.

The Case Against:
- Weil appears not to have a business-attire policy for firm photos, with the unfortunate result that too
many of their attorneys look like GAP associates. Cecilia, taking casual to new depths, seems to be sporting a t-shirt.

Ahn-Kitcher.jpg2. Sue-Yun Ahn and Charles Kitcher
(Buy them a grapefruit spoon.)

The Case:
- This two-lawyer combo met during law school at Columbia. Charles probably bleeds Columbia blue (which is an actual color): His parents are both philosophy professors there, and he graduated summa from the college. Sue-Yun did her undergrad at NYU, graduating magna.
- They had an Article III officiant: US District Judge Denise Cote, for whom Sue-Yun clerked.
- SCOTUS alert! After the Cote clerkship, Sue-Yun was a Tatel Tot, and when she gets back from her honeymoon she’ll report for duty at the chambers of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
- Charles recently finished a clerkship with US District Judge Richard Owen. Later this month he’ll start at Covington & Burling.

The Case Against:
- We generally have nothing against Columbia, but there’s too much of it in this write-up. They even had their ceremony at the Columbia Club. If you must double down on a school, that school should be Harvard.

Wagner-McCoy-Goldstein.jpg
3. Katherine Wagner-McCoy and Jacob Goldstein
(Buy them a splatter screen.)

The Case:
- Both halves of this pairing were Harvard undergraduates, but they met in law school at Columbia. Jake also has a master’s in classics from Oxford.
- Kate is a staff lawyer at the Bronx Defenders, a nonprofit providing free legal representation to people who probably belong behind bars. (Just kidding — soldier on, Bronx Defenders!). Jake’s clerking for Judge Chester J. Straub of the Second Circuit.
- This photo is from the couple’s website, not the NYT — which explains why Kate is showing a bit of skin. Nice abs, and we love this sneaky, underhanded way to earn an edge over the other legal-eagle competitors!

The Case Against:
- The groom is a stepson of the late Murray B. Levin, who was a member of the Communist Party and an “unreconstructed radical” who died believing that “[c]lass consciousness would be obtained ultimately when the masses finally revolted against the oligarchy.” We wonder what Professor Levin would have thought of his stepson appearing in the haute-bourgeois wading pool that is the NYT weddings section.

and relationship earlier this year.

Samantha Power is the single most overrated person on the entire eastern seaboard. Apparenlty genocide makes her a sad panda.

Bonus points if you can identify the panda reference.

5: Have you read A Problem from Hell? I thought it was a compelling of critique of previous administrations, the UN, and the failure of both to address genocide. Of course, some of the ideas aren't entirely original, such as the American paralysis post-Somalia that led to inaction in Rwanda, but I enjoyed the book as a distillation of some recent history.

How is this even a contest? Power/Sunstein by default. Even if you don't care for their politics, you have to admit they're the most accomplished couple here.

I like Mrs. Wager-McCoy-Goldstein. 3 last names are better than one!

All the women who are getting married in this post are fat.

There, that should cause at least 4 sh**storms for the husbands to clean up.

Fatties, get on a diet.

Translaton: Lat is quitting, so we need more fluff to fill the space.

based on head size alone, we know who runs the household in Couple #2

Someone needs to tell the guy in #1 that goatees, and particularly pseudo goatees, are f*cking gross.

avatar
20 Posted by guest | Permalink Wednesday, August 20, 2008 2:14 PM

So is the woman in #3 going to be Katherine Wagner-McCoy-Goldstein?

Come on ladies, pick a name and run with it!

I think it's cute the Elie is participating in the commentary like a normal human being, instead of sitting around on his ass, and using "we" as though he was some freaking king of the universe or something!

Okay Lat, I'm not that mad at you. But quit being lazy. We all know you're leaving, but give us some really good stuff before you peace out. Thnx!

# 21 here. I meant to say: I think it's cute "that" Elie...

I refuse to make a Jacob Goldstein/Eliot Spitzer joke. Again.

So you've covered the Power/Sunstein relationship, engagement and now wedding? Please, please refrain from joining them on the honeymoon. That would be wrong in every possible way.

I was sipping coffee when I linked to Silver's Weil webpage. Thanks to an involuntary gag reflex, there is now coffee everywhere. Pluck those damn eyebrows!

I am surprised the wedding watcher noticed girl number 1's t-shirt in her firm photo. She has the eyebrows on glorious display. Whoa. Forget the Wii, buy them tweezers.

25, Linn doesn't comment much on people's physical attributes, unless it's to say how hot they are.

avatar
27 Posted by guest | Permalink Wednesday, August 20, 2008 3:00 PM

Wouldn't it be better for couple number 2 to double down in New York than to suffer through a single minute in Boston or at Haaaaaaaaaahvaaaahd? Geesh, get over yourselves HLS alums.

avatar
28 Posted by guest | Permalink Wednesday, August 20, 2008 3:02 PM

Aren't some of these repeats? I swear I've seen at least one of the couples before on LEWW. Lazy...

avatar
29 Posted by guest | Permalink Wednesday, August 20, 2008 3:11 PM

28 - your retarded. (Pun intended.)

Cecilia (#1) could be law-hot if she got the 'brows under control.

Ok Powerass should not be allowed to win. Need I remind everyone that Sunstein cheated on his wife with Cass? I'm pretty sure that's right up there with Edwards and Spitzer.

I think you are missing some quality lawyer couples from July... what about John Eustice and Barbara Rutkowsi? They seem like your usual type of ivy-league educated attorney couple... written up in the NY Times, etc....

it's kind of ridiculous to allow really old people (e.g. two decades older than the average couple) to compete here...
