Lawyers of the Day: Lithuanian Pentathletes
The Olympics draw to a close this weekend, and soon we shall all forget how excited we were about weird sporting events like the hammer throw, the trampoline, and synchronized swimming.
Two lawyers made a good showing today in one-of-those-sports-we-barely-knew-existed-but-now-we’re-really-excited-about: the men’s Modern Pentathlon! Lithuanian attorneys Andrejus Zadneprovskis and Edvinas Krungolcas won the silver and bronze medals.
These lawyers are well-rounded guys. The Modern Pentathlon is an all-day event that involves shooting, fencing, swimming, riding, and running. From Reuters:
Modern pentathlon was designed to simulate what a soldier delivering a message under duress would go through. Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the modern Games, created it as a test of strength, technical ability, concentration and endurance….The idea behind the sport is that a soldier is sent to deliver a message. He faces an enemy with a gun and shoots, then duels against others with a sword, swims across a river, rides an unfamiliar horse and then runs cross-country to his destination.
That’s impressive. If these two want to practice law in the States, Stoel might be interested in them, especially if they can throw some freestyle running into the mix.
P.S. It’s not just Lithuania that’s turning out lawyer-athletes; the United States is too. Fencer Sada Jacobson, who snagged a silver medal in the women’s individual sabre competition, is heading to law school in the fall, at the University of Michigan.

What would be a really good test is if the athletes also got shot at. That would really simulate a soldier delivering a message under duress

The Men's Pentathlon is a 100m hurdles, shot, long jump, high jump and 1500m.

So event #2 is fencing. Who are they fencing against? Other pentathlon competitors? A designated guy with a sword who's blocking everyone's path? The knights who say "Ni"?

Like so many attorneys, the guy on the right is both well-rounded and multitalented. I swear I've seen him on TV playing himself in Intervention, To Catch a Predator....

18- I'd rather have an olympic silver medal than be a SCOTUS clerk.... hands down. Who cares where she went to law school. An olympic medal gives one more prestige than YLS + Law Review + Scotus clerk and its not even a contest.
Jim Thorpe competed in the pentathlon (a track and field variant of the decathlon). This guy competes in the modern pentathlon. There is a difference.
They only shoot air pistols. First, I'm glad that number two was not given a real gun. Second, I'm surprised and disappointed to learn that air pistol shooting has a place in the Olympics. Third, I'm now unimpressed by the modern pentathlon as it only requires shooting an air pistol (air pistoling?) and only at 10 meters.

Yea but you have to shoot tired after running and stuff. And an "air pistol" is typically 22 cal. and capable of a fatal wound. Still, #2 should never hold a loaded AK-47.
