The NYU Experience: Now 100% Metro-Terrible
A tipster pointed out that NYU has revamped their website.
According to the tipster, “It’s hilariously awful and probably can indicate to the Violet alumni [at ATL] just how uncool the student body has become.”
This new web presence can only be understood as a direct challenge to former NYU students to find and pummel current NYU students. It’s about honor at this point.
If you don’t believe us, we invite you to click on Ping-Pong Man. If you do, you will learn that NYU students now are advised to make ping-pong play dates, that the game of ping-pong loosely resembles the Socratic method, and that Richard Posner has been called out.
There is also a student that informs us that her favorite NYC coffee shop still sells coffee “by the cup.” Great tip! So many New Yorkers still must suck their coffee out of a hose.
We think ping-pong man and cup girl should merge their interests and hang out where real NYU students spend their free time. Luckily, organizing beer-pong (or Beirut … discuss) is still easy enough to do over at Off the Wagon.

The new NYU website is much better. Wayyyy better organized.
oh yeah, and I GOT DA BOOTY JUICE!
Pretty funny post, I thought.
lol. Just read the coffee out of a hose line.
Everyone at Iowa drinks coffee out of a hose, what's wrong with that?
Rumor has it the old editor drank milk through a hose.
I am SO glad that I picked a different top school over them. Maybe NYU students should get together and discuss their skyrocketing rent prices thanks to the Tribeca cartels. Or talk about how they can pose with their sheepskin jackets in Washington Square Park. :)
Trying...to...figure out how.... to make....2girls1cup....reference...can't quite....do it.....
the production values are a throwback to the infancy of websites. are they trying to be retro or are they simply color blind? what an eyesore.
I agree with #6. When is ATL going to discuss these outrageous rents?!?!
$1,500 a month for a 10x11 room, in an apartment with one bathroom, that you share with one or two other people!
http://www.law.nyu.edu/housing/ratesandoptions/academicyear/mercerresidence/index.htm
6, must go to CLS and be bitter about it. I am not sure what the point of the post is. NYU's website is pretty standard for law schools.
Table tennis was the best thing about law school. Every large AmLaw office should have at least one table. I think this should bump NYU up in the rankings.
if the olympics have taught me anything its that white people don't play ping pong.
Hm, so that site is supposed to provide students with useful info? Back in my day, I relied on person-to-person contact, rather than 5 sec. clips. Or maybe the point of the site is to show how personable and cool the current students are. If you have to set up a site that shows your students aren't jerks, you've already failed. Either way, it's shittaaay.
"by the cup" girl is trying to say they also sell coffee by the pound. don't be so mean to her.
#9 - why don't you go get a market rate apartment in the neighborhood if you don't like what NYU has to offer? Oh yeah, those are all far more than $1500/mo.
#5 wins post of the day, hands down.
In fairness - Porto Rico mostly sells beans, which is why she also mentioned getting coffee "by the cup"
I know Lat is no grammarian either, but it should be a student "who" informs us . . . .
GUYS AT MY LAW SCHOOL USED TO MEET UP FOR A DAISY CHAIN/CIRCLE JERK AT THE TEASPOT ALL THE TIME. IT WAS NO BIG DEAL.
-GAY FRAT STUD
American's website is WAY better. More evidence that the law school rankings are sckwed.
Is NYU prestigious?
Elie, do you understand how filthy "cup girl" sounds? Have you been on the internet in the past year?
Really? I'm supposed to care about the new NYLS website? Really?
Let's get one thing clear: beer pong and beirut are NOT the same game. Beer pong involves paddles and one cup on each side. Thank you, that is all.
23: you realize that this blog posts 8 or so posts a day, right? How many posts would you like to see today on law firm layoffs? Relax, guy.
i got da booty juice from a hose
watch out 7, Lat likes to censor 2 girls 1 cup references. Hopefully the new Ed is a little cooler than Lattycakes
24 is right, but I will add one thing: beer pong typically is played by two girls (with paddles) and one cup.
i understand that NYU has a law school, but what does this post have to do with law?
23: you also realize that it's NYU LS, not NYLS?
Good post. I really liked the "suck their coffee out of a hose" line.
I urge everyone to vote Sophist!
NYU actually just revised their whole website, and this "Experience" thing is just a small part of it. I think the new website ( http://www.law.nyu.edu/index.htm ) is pretty cool.
Ping pong guy has never seen a vagina in person
Honeymoon period begins.
So far so good though, Elie Mystal. Short and sweet.
I've been reading this blog for almost four weeks and I STILL have not seen any do a better post than Marin's "if they mated" post. This blog is in the toilet.
Off the Wagon.... how I loved thee
The game of jumping off a cliff also slightly resembles the Socratic Method. What's his point?
Elie, your sarcasm is tired. You just sound bitter and angry--not entertaining.
This post made me laugh Sophist. Your ATL career is starting off on the right foot.
23: nice subtle troll. well done.
Good job Sophist. This is funny.
38 sounds humorless and judgmental. Sophist rocks.
thank god nyu finally did something about its website. that thing used to give me a headache when i had to think about navigating it.
Wow, that tipster has a place where they still serve it by the cup? Pretty much everywhere I go to now serves it by the half cup, so that two people need to split one cup. Some adventures of my friends and I splitting such cups can be found here:
http://www.2girls1cup.com/
Doesn't the "by the cup" reference refer to the standard size cup rather than the venti, grande etc. bullshit from Starbucks?

the worst part is that the google links are now all shot, so every time you search google for "course schedule" or something, it takes you to a dead page. while i agree that the menus are easier now, it's still much slower than googling for the specific page you want.
the guy in the red sweater in the cheap eats video reminds me of the skinny guy from road trip
i meant the good eats video
UPenn St.-Philly campus has a great website. Looks like a T14 school in the making.
http://www.dsl.psu.edu/
I am confused, however. Is Dickinson a suburb of Philly? I thought it was near the Warden School.
-Aspiring 1L, American '09
Lat is definitely leaving this site at the right time.
I think the new page is excellent. Given that most entering 1Ls are between 12 and 14 years old, it's nice that they may see a familiar face when they start at the law school. Orientation is difficult for young teens. Oh, wait. They're adults. Never mind. It sucks.
What can you expect from the website of a state school. Thank God are tax dollars aren't being spent on websites.
Good post, Elie.
I love the pic of Dworkin on the main site. It says, "I'm Ronald. Fucking. Dworkin. I won't lift a finger to tie my tie right for your shitty little promo pic."
Yes, 53. Thank God are tax dollars aren't being spent on websites. Fite the gud fite!!!
This article is incoherent to those without NYU background... I must be getting old.
32, thanks for the link to the "official site", the quotes from the profs are even funnier than ping pong guy and coffee cup girl.
A flaming torch is an appropriate logo for this school.
gawd - what a horrible website (nyu law, and not atl).
That bar seems like your average sports bar. Why would anyone take on the exorbitant price of Village living because of a place like that? You might as well be in Omaha, NE.
I have to admit that the average NYU law student, however, is more attractive than the average law student from any of the other top schools, excluding Stanford. It's either that or they're gaming the photogenic element of their study body by picking the best pictures of the bunch.
30 is a newb.
And here I was thinking that if this is representative, the student body has gotten way less attractive than it was when I was a student there ...
I don't know that "former NYU students" are much better at this tech stuff. NYU was my top choice until they sent me a "mini-CD" with several videos of students describing their experiences at the law school.
To say it was horrendous would be putting it mildly.
Now I'm glad to have avoided all of these NYU d-bags.
The "coffee from a hose" line made me bust out laughing in the computer lab, now all the other students thing I am a weirdo, thanks a lot
50, AU ripping on Penn, haha! Great meme, hope to see more of it.
I didn't know until now that Max Headroom's son got admitted to NYU Law and started a ping pong league there.
Guys in my high school used to redo d-bag websites into revised websites with new types of d-bagguery all the time, it was no big deal.
- FRAT STUD
Just found a studio apartment in Union Square for a measly $3,560 per month! Boy, I'm sure that everyone will be all over this bargain. I better bid quickly.
why are their students so unattractive?
All I can say is, WHAT A BUNCH OF F'in TOOLBAGS!!!
It pains me to see that these are the people who will be representing NYC and NYU. Come on, where are these jerk-off's from? Jersey, PA, and CT probably..... Get a grip!
69: That' s more than my mortgage on my Capitol Hill row house. DC continues to own NYC.
I stand corrected. The NYU site with pingpong guy sucks. The girl for the alternative spring break is cute (she just graduated) but I don't see why I should be funding her trips when she has the money to donate $250 to Obama. Moreover, most of the people I spoke to going on the alternative spring break trip are doing it because it is free.
$250 is not a lot of money, 73. I regularly donate similar sums to charities and political candidates. If you're trying to impugn someone's financial credibility, you're not doing it well.
You people are idiots. "By the cup" refers to 8 ounces (by volume) of beans. Not a cup of coffee.
I spent my 1L year at NYU law (about 5 years ago). Didn't like anything about it. Facilities were outdated (resembled my junior high school) and certainly not designed to accomodate the large number of matriculants. The professors ranged from good to horrible (true of any law school, I know), living in Guido-city sucked, fellow students were intellectual snobs without the intellect, etc.
I want to punch the ping pong guy in the face. Or maybe the boy zone.
Is the purple meant to elicit a subconscious assocation of NYU with royalty? How is this reconcilable with the liberal leanings of the faculty and student body, the aim of the Brennan Center, and NYU Law's claim to be a "private school in the public service"?
The closest the larger univeristy comes to riches are the spoiled Long Island daddy's girls among the undergraduate student body.
Unique New York
Unique New York....
The arsonist has oddly shaped feet
Off the Wagon sucked
All the cool kids went to the Belgian beer bar on w 4th or The Dove
The Girl: For me, Norman Mailer has exactly that same sort of relevance - that affirmitive, negative duality that only Proust or Flaubert could achieve.
The Operator: I don't know if we're gonna make it or not, doesn't look too good.
The Girl: I'm a graduate of New York University.
The Operator: We're gonna make it.
Pong is a crap 70's video game. Beirut circa 1989 is what you should think of when you play ("the Game"). That is what your body looks like after a good battle royale, and is merely a reference for what your brain feels like.
I drink your milkshake with a hose
74, that is great that you donate to political candidates. However, if you have $250 extra to do that (or more), you don't need extra money from the school to fund your spring break trips. I paid full boat to attend NYU. The money they get from tuition and donations should not be spent on funding student's spring break trips. This is not meant to impugn anyone. The fact of the matter is NYU charges a ton of money to go there. If they can afford to fund student's spring break trips including for those who have ample resources than they should be lowering tuition.
PS- If you think that $250 is not a lot of money and you donate regularly to politicians, I really hope that you are not getting any kind of LRAP asistance since you don't need it.
Beer Pong!
BTW, if you think Derek Bell for con law and Neuborne for evidence are must take classes than you obviously don't care about learning law. Both professors would concede that they teach little black letter law. Neuborne, is apparently great for fed courts and he is very nice but you don't learn crap in his class.
Off the wagon is part of a chain of the worst bars in New York. Porto Rico is mainly a coffee-bean store, so the info about "by the cup" is not so odd.
It's depressing that these assholes live near one of the most famous coffee shops in America, yet none of the name-check it. And the three other legendary places on the same block closed due to the same gentrification and douche-density explosion that accompanied the NYU expansion and doomed the rest of the East and West Villages.
Also, the chocolate guy and tea guy are the biggest loser douchetards in the universe,
+1 for "cup girl"
-10 for not using "cup chick"
this is a terrible post. it's dripping with way too much bias and hate. if you look at other posts, even when it's to make fun of something, it's done differently... the post will state the facts and perhaps intimate certain things, but it largely leaves it for people to interpret and make fun as they want in the comments. but this post is just all about bashing nyu, and the bashing happens in the post itself. editors shouldn't do that. i'm definitely no longer a fan of elie.

don't be assholes. "by the cup" refers to the fact that porto rico coffee predominantly sells coffee in bulk but maintains a little counter in the back to sell by the cup a couple hours a day. maybe it's a little downtown secret that some of you (dyspeptic columbia alums sick of hiking to 119th and amsterdam for your cup of joe, i presume?) don't know about?

why do nyu people always presume anyone making fun of their school is from cls? i go to a less prestigious T14 than either, but it's always seemed like a pretty hilarious inferiority complex.
Under the "good eats" video, a student keys us into a lesser known spot that serves burritos, called "Chipotle". Enjoy your fry bread, University of North Dakota law student!!! Wait, you have two in Grand Forks?
my retarded gay niece went to NYU law
