More Advice for Law Students: Don’t Do This
We recently offered some helpful hints for new law students, distilled from over 200 reader suggestions. We now have an addendum to our list of tips, based on an ill-advised email that found its way into our inbox. Some background:
Today, all members of last year’s Law Review Editorial Board at [George Washington University Law School] — who have since graduated — received the unsolicited mass email (reproduced below) from a current 1L student whom no one knows or has even met….Talk about a great example of what not to do as a 1L. What a way to endear yourself to your new classmates, not even a month into the school year! Can you say G-U-N-N-E-R?
Check out the Gunner’s email, after the jump.
Here is the email (Gunner’s name withheld — please keep it that way):
Date: Tue, 16 Sep 2008, 00:07:19 -0500
To: [All 2007-2008 Law Review Editorial Board Members & 2008-2009 Senior Editors]
From: [redacted]
Subject: 1L ClassesGood Evening:
I am a 1L and am currently taking Contracts with Cunningham, Torts with Turley, Civil Procedure with Tyler, and Criminal Law with Kerr. I am up to date on my reading and have begun outlining and reviewing Law in a Flash cards for each subject. However, I was wondering if you have taken any of the aforementioned professors and have any words of wisdom to impart upon me, with respect to the favored treatises, etc. of the respective professors, as well as tips on how to do well in their courses and what you might have done to put yourself at the top of the curve.
I would greatly appreciate any tips that I can get from past students, so if you have any or if you know of any one who does, please contact me at your earliest convenience.
Thanks so much and I hope that you are having a great week.
Some friendly advice to law students: don’t send out emails like this one. Good luck!
P.S. Per standard ATL policy, please don’t out Gunner (or tipster) in the comments. If you see any comments that engage in or encourage outing, please let us know by email (subject line: “Comment Removal Request”). Thanks.

lots of alliteration there (minus the civ pro dude).

Dear Gunner,
Nothing you do will matter, since your degree is second-rate compared to Georgetown.
This guy really deserves to be outed.
What exactly is wrong with such an email?

Dear Gunner,
Studying will only get you so far, since your degree is second-rate compared to Georgetown. Better hone that deep throat!
This kid is going to be middle of the pack, at best,
at least this guy is capable of writing sentences, unlike...
I actually sent this email just to listen to all the law review d-bags wax nostalgic on all the gunning they did as 1Ls.
Poor guy/gal. Trying too hard.
3 & 4, you got banged.

12 -- I agree, it's not like he blasted the whole school with it. He sent it to like 15 people whose egos have grown so big from making LR that they need to out a clueless first year on ATL. Either help the guy out or ignore it, but don't belittle him in a pathetic attempt to make yourself feel superior.
I wouldn't blink at receiving such an email at my school, though it is known for its "collegiality" (unlike some other schools, it seems...) I'd probably answer it, too, if I had useful advice to impart. Why not? It's not like I'll be competing with the 1L's for grades. And said 1L may be able to help me out later, after we both graduate.
I like how Lat, in the sentence about not outing the author, narrows down the pool by half.
Unless of course, it's a trick and the author is really a him.
7 = INSECURE
I agree with 17 and 18--this doesn't seem all that terrible. At least he didn't walk into the law review office and ask if he could load our outlines onto his memory stick (like someone did to me).
I think it a bit odd that this is the type of email that draws attentino from ATL these days. What exactly is wrong with this student's email inquiry? I call douchebaggery on the part of the LR member who forwarded this.
Dear Gunner,
I see from your schedule that you're in Section 11. This is a terrible calamity. All of the Section 11 professors are murders who hunt down and kill the students for sport. Only a handful of students survived last year. You should look over your shoulder frequently to make sure one of them is not sneaking up behind you.
Best of luck with your 1L year.
Sincerely,
2L (Formerly Section 12)
1ls in my law school used to be really nervous about grades, it was no big deal.

Yeah, I tell you who comes off looking like the real jerk and pathetic "G-U-N-N-E-R"...
The "tipster." Blech.
actually asking for tips isn't so bad, but the wording of the e-mail makes me think he has a stick up his ass.
personally, the only thing i ever got from law review was the outline database which meant I had to do nothing for 2L and 3L years.
This law student will someday end up like the general counsel in the movie Michael Clayton.
This is dumb. The kid sent an honest and pretty reasonable inquiry. I don't see anything wrong with this email at all.
Maybe I'm in the minority based on the comments, but I found this email mortifying.
The email sender has got to be a guy. Girls are incapable of being such tools and disseminating their tool-ishness far and wide.
Also, the syntax is indicative of an assertive male.
I think it a bit odd that this is the type of email that draws attention from ATL these days. The 1L's inquiry with former members of LR seems acceptable. 21 - I agree. no need to belittle the 1L. I actually think I feel more sorry for the other attorneys that have to work with the LR douche that forwarded this.
This is a pretty sad email. But the person who forwarded it is much, much, much more pathetic. MUCH more pathetic. The idea that a question to classmates is forwarded to a blog shows what pathetic human beings so many law students really are.
All of you who participate in this crap must have real self-esteem/confidence issues. If it makes you feel good to try to out (or make example of) other students, then I feel really sorry for you. Also, we now know (basically) the pool from which the pathetic source comes from -- one of those on the law review editorial board...
Good for you guys/gals. Now whenever I meet someone from GW with these grad years and with law review I'll have to see if they seem like such a prick as to forward something like this out . It has tainted all of those on LR at the school -- great move!

Not the FIRST to say there is nothing wrong with this e-mail. I would never have sent one like this myself, but might have replied to one had it been sent to me.
33/34-
Relax, psycho.
2008 GW Editorial Board to insufferable pricks! Can you say D-O-U-C-H-E-B-A-G?
The worst part about law school is that you don't know what the fuck you are doing when you get there. Therefore, I see nothing wrong with such an email. Who the fuck else is this dude supposed to ask?
People that make fun of "gunners" are insecure douchebags because everything about law, law school, etc... is about doing well... where you rank, what school you went to, etc....

GW Law Review = Insecure douchebags trying to look cool but really suck at life.
There's a right and a wrong way to do this. This is the wrong way.
You're SUPPOSED to actually go and meet someone on law review in person. You know, introduce yourself like you're not a socially crippled freak. Then, ask them for tips or if they know anyone who did well in X class. That person will probably tell you, "yeah, so-and-so got an A+ in that class...I bet you could get their outline."
Then you send so-and-so and email, saying "Hey, I met a friend of yours who told me to e-mail you...I was wondering if you could point me toward some good outlines."
When you send an overly-flowery, gunneresque email like this, we're likely to just laugh at your patheticness amongst ourselves and forward the email for great amusement. Because let's face it, you're not the type of person we'd like to work with in the future.
- Former Law Review-er
Being on law review at GW is like being a the head shift manager at McDonalds.
This "gunner" would have been smart to offer some type of quid pro (i.e., booze, narcotics, after hours companionship, etc..). That may of gotten he/she something besides a blasting on this blog..
I mean, yeah, its lame - but not a bad idea. If you want to get outlines from the people who were top of their first year class, then the people you ask are the ones on Law Review. Wish I'd thought of it (or given enough of a crap to think about thinking of it).
I'd have had better grades first year and my whole life would be better. I'd be working at a V15 instead of this TTT V30.
the LR guy who forwarded the email sounds like a ginormous douche too. i just imagine him saying this in a really snotty voice...
I am a 2008 graduate of the George Washington University Law School, where I was a member of the Editorial Board of the GW Law Review (2007-2008).
I feel like this is a totally normal e-mail that gunners would send all the time. Another trick for you ambitious 1L gunners is when you have a visiting prof, e-mail the Law Review at the visiting prof's HOME SCHOOL to ask for outlines or copies of past final exams that may be posted -- also par for the course in some circles.
GW law review = TTT
That gunner's name is Mel... Mel Gibson
Law students are getting good at damage control when one of their stupid moves get outed here. I wonder if the emailer was smart enough to use different ip addresses when posting as 9, 17, 18, & 22. Find out Lat.
Someone get 18 a tissue.
Oh my goodness. I'm with 30, this email is ridiculous. Who the christ starts outlining in September? That said, publicly punishing people for their naive approach may be a bit harsh. I'd tell the guy to go have a beer and calm the hell down.
This really isn't a big deal. So the kid was looking for a little advice. Is this worse then those kids that suck up to their professors or even the 1L girls who flirt with any guys on law review in order to get their outlines. its all fair, it happens - so what?
Hopefully he doesn't get input from some bottom-feeder who managed to write on to law review.
This email made me laugh out loud.
The way to do this is to make some 2L and 3L friends and ask them for their advice. Don't mass-mail complete strangers.
I think it a bit odd that this is the type of email that draws duplicative posts these days.
Test
can't blame the kid...the only way someone at such a TTT will even get midlaw is if he is on Law Review.
Guys in my high school used to label law reviews placing 6 SCOTUS clerks in the past 5 years TTT all the time. It was no big deal.
On my way to work today, some guy asked me for spare change, so I kicked his stupid little cardboard house to pieces.
GULC = GW . They are both dumps. Just give up.

I was in my hometown, having a drink at the local bar and ran into a guy I knew from high school who had dropped out in 11th grade. He has worked at McD's his entire working life and is a store manager. Makes the same salary I do as a PD. Pass me the .38
I wouldn't have sent this sort of e-mail myself -- and would have thought it was a bit weird to receive such an e-mail -- but I really don't see the big deal. I agree with others that the bigger d-bag is the person who forwarded the e-mail to Lat. I also think Lat is a bigger d-bag for having posted it.
57 is crazy. GW gets biglaw all the time. Just look at the stats. We also have a SCOTUS clerk right now. Let the good times roll.
GULCers better get used to wiping G Dubs ass soon.

People who grade on to Law Review. That way, you only have to edit and extend your crappy outline in late October instead of the more daunting task of starting from scratch.
Please finish that priv log and have it on my desk yesterday.

GW = TTT
Guys at my high school used to e-mail past editors all the time for tips about their teachers. It was no big deal.
Judging from the many comments that are supportive of this tool-ish email, ATL readers are even bigger d-bags than I suspected.
wow, the GW trolls come out in full force
I see nothing wrong with this email. The student limited his email, and by choosing people from law review, he was asking people who were most likely to have been academically successful and thus in the best position to help. Isn't this the sort of thing you should be doing as a law student - looking for help when needed from the most promising resource pool?
I was pretty much encouraged to do exactly this when I entered law school, except to ask in person rather than email. Ask someone who took your professor before for the best tips of success. Law school is a different beast from undergrad as we all know; nothing is wrong with trying to minimize the pain of the learning curve by asking people who have already been there.
Submitter is a jerk for forwarding this one for mockery.
So many people love to hate on GW. It's a fantastic law school, and their alumni go on to do great things (biglaw and otherwise). I wish you'd all be a bit more open minded.
-Harvard 3L
60,
UVA also equals TTT. You're in the same boat as GWU and Georgetown.
Sincerely,
NYU 2L
Gilligan .. er, Gunner ..... get me another pencil chop chop. If you want to be on law review you need to redo your outline of Hawkins v. McGee.
NYU 2L, you have a lot to learn. UVA, GW and Gtown are great schools. Stop being so stuck up about which school you go to. It's unbecoming. And thank you to Harvard 3L for knocking some sense onto this message board.
I'm willing to bet this 1L got a large number of responses from the former board members offering real advice on the classes. The former board members would also have not seen anything wrong with this behavior.
GW's do look like trolls. Wow.
GULC. Set. Match.
This email is not too bad. He targeted the people that he thought might be most capable in helping him. It wasn't pushy or rude.
Isn't a gunner someone who is identified by obnoxious in-class behavior? The email author may be generally quiet in class. It probably seemed like a good idea to him at the time to send this email.
Kind of crappy to be put on blast by a snobby former editor.
Another Lame Story from ATTTL!
Trig Palin could even get into GW. Damn.

giving the letter to ATL makes the LR peeps look like the bigger Dbags
Someone at OSU Law wrote a similar email to the managing board of the law review this year. The "From" name was "The Truth." An anonymous gunner is much worse than a known gunner: you need to know who to hate!
typical law school loser
People who hate GW clearly hate themselves. Get real.
ROFL at "Law in a Flash cards"
The original tipster GRADUATED. How the hell was this guy supposed to meet forwarder? Walk to his firm, give him a ring, and offer to buy him a latte and spend time picking his brain? F THAT!!!! Now THAT is the kind of crap that should get on ATL, not some random email that takes up a minute of your day.
I get unsolicited emails from students at my old law school a couple times a year. I try to be helpful, and I almost always respond, although they usually have bad grades and are disparately trying to find a job. Turns out, I should have been forwarding the emails to ATL and calling them dbags. Live and learn.
the person who ratted out this slightly awkward email must be a real LR tool - the kind of person who makes us all look like assh@les. go away.

Instead of outing the purported gunner, why not out the former LR editor that submitted this email. The 1L is naive. The recent graduate is an ass.
Yes, this guy sounds like a tool and a social retard, and I would not want to have a drink with him. That said, I think the other commenters are right -- why criticize a guy for actually trying? How many of us wish, in hindsight, that we were gunners in law school? Sure, my classmates might have hated me, but I wish I'd graduated in the top 10% instead of being smack in the middle. I wish I'd been on law review and become good friends with all my professors, then gotten a district court clerkship, then a circuit court clerkship, then a sweet clerkship bonus when I joined a prestigious appellate practice somewhere where I was treated with respect instead of beaten like an abused dog.
In short, I wish I'd sent out more e-mails like this and been more of a tool. Law school would have sucked, but maybe the rest of my life would have been better.
nothing wrong with this email.

82 -- Did you just go there?
It used to be that about 50% of the posts on this web site made me think "what a waste of time...I'm not going here anymore." That number is very quickly approaching 100%. This looked so promissing from the front page, but having now read the e-mail I realize this is just about the worst post of all time. Could the e-mail have been less exciting? I know about 30 people who did the same exact thing. Maybe they didn't contact random people, but this kid had the guts to do so (and was smart enough to pick those who did well), so more power to him. After about 18 months on this site, I'm officially done. Sure, I'll come back when NY goes to 190 (in a decade or two) and I'm sure I'll check in on the bonus watch once in awhile - but that's about it.
93 - no you aren't.

Then you buy sporstcar...get high, bang some nice young prostitute and head back to work the next day...
Rinse...repeat
It's only September 16th and this 1L is "up to date on my reading and have begun outlining and reviewing Law in a Flash cards for each subject" -- sounds like an antisocial tool. He'll be perfect for a V20.
76 is a NYLS student pretending to be from NYU.

I agree with most of the previous posters. There's nothing horribly wrong with the email although it isn't something I would do myself. And if I received it I would probably tell the kid to pick up Glannon for Civpro.
The tipster is way worse. He's probably working at Cadwalader or Shearman or some other craphole and thinks his shit doesn't stink.
Guy should have sent an individual e-mail, rather than a mass forwarded e-mail. At least make the LR D-bags think they're special.
Setting the record straight: Yes, perhaps it wasn't the most socially acceptable method for getting help your 1L year (as many have noted above), but at least the student is trying. The posted email didn't adequately portray the tone of the message (as most fail to do), as evidenced by follow-up communications with this individual.
I was one of the original recipients of the email, and I responded with suggested 2L/3Ls that this individual could contact in person, as well as other options available at the school. Obviously, the "outer" on our exec board chose to respond differently. While it was an inappropriate response to a sincere plea for help, it's equally flawed to assume the entire board shares the views and values of this particular member.

Somewhat similar story. When I was going into my 2L year, I was looking for a new roommate and was talking to an incoming 1L. While he eventually decided he wanted to live closer to school (something I became greatful for later on) he sent me a nice e-mail and asked if I had any outlines, etc. that I wouldn't mind sharing. (So this e-mail wasn't out of the blue). I sent him all of my 1L year ones, happy to help out. Then, for the rest of the semester, despite the fact that we didn't really know each other, he continuously sent me e-mails asking for clarifications about my outlines and other questions about the classes. It got super annoying....
And that man's name was GEORGE ZIPP!
This blog has become utterly pointless. I have never found it informative in the past, but at least I have found it funny and an entertaining distraction. Now it's just idiotic. The topics are lame and the writing is atrocious. If this "leak" from GW is the best ATL can do, I'm done. From now on, you can find me on Dealbreaker.

Who cares. George Washington is a TTT.
UDC 1L
Why is this bad? Maybe the tone is a little too ingratiating, but what's wrong in general with emailing people who've obviously enjoyed success at your school and asking them for tips? E-mail's pretty unobtrusive; if you don't want to help, hit delete. I wish I'd thought of doing something similar my first year.
113: Because the former nerds who populate law schools want desperately to appear aloof and cool.
Yes, the kid is an overactive tool, but cut him some slack. He NEEDS to do well at GWU to guarantee a job in this economy. He's young and doesn't know better.
Advice to Gunner:
1. transfer to GULC
2. shoot self
3. ????
4. PROFIT!
The email was definitely a little gunner-ish, but it wasn't all that bad. The kid just wants some tips from successful upperclassmen. Maybe it was ok for the recipients to joke about it amongst themselves, but it was pretty douche-tastic to forward it to ATL.
This is bitchmade, but forwarding the email to ATL is just smarmy and toolish. This douche just wants everyone to know that he made LR at GW--something my neighbor's pug couldn't have "achieved."

Reading the post and the comments leads me to the following conclusion:
1. This blog completely sucks. Post a story of value or just shut this crap down.
2. The number of accredited law schools should be reduced by 50% immediately.
3. The person who forwarded this to ATL should be outed and then beaten mercilessly.
4. Most lawyers/law students really are d-bag losers.
5. Whoever posted 95 should find a new career and a therapist.
-d-bag loser
I went to GW and was a mediocre student at best. I have a cushy biglaw job now b/c I work in a secondary market and have used family contacts to my advantage. I also toiled away at a insurance defense firm for a couple of years before I made the switch.
The truth is, there are way more people like this 1L in law school then not and I applaud them for being "tools" and doing whatever it takes to get ahead. I personally was too concerned about not being labeled a gunner and my high school mentality probably contributed to my poor performance. I wish I had sent this email...
The members of the LR board have access to outlines and other information the rest of the student body does not and I think this person was smart and resourceful in hitting them up early.
The "tipster" ought remember exactly what he/she did the first year to get ahead.
This is bitchmade, but forwarding the email to ATL is just smarmy and toolish. This douche just wants everyone to know that he made LR at GW--something my neighbor's pug could have "achieved."
I read this and I was thinking, damn, Mystal actually did a good job for once.
Then I realized it was posted by Lat.
The alleged "gunner" strikes more as of the hopelessly earnest and naive type than a real gunner.
122 -- I made sweet love to your neighbor's pug
Identity of alleged gunner is. . .
GUNNY MC GUNNERSON!
(made ya look!)
Aggressive. I give him/her props for having the balls to send out the email. He must be a business major undergrad or something.
Also, I second @123's statement.
18,
"It's not like I'll be competing with the 1L's for grades." So much for my that "'collegiality'" your school "known for".
Um, anyone reading this should be grateful to the tipster for forwarding.....
So the guy sends out an email looking for some help in a highly competitive environment, and Lat tries to take him down a notch or two. But why? The kid is showing the kind of initative that will virtually ensure he succeeds--not only in LS, but in the sweat shop he ultimately lands. There was nothing wrong with his email--it was neither offensive nor overly pushy. Not everyone goes to Harvard and has job offers showered on them like rain. The fact that Lat berates a first-year for trying to get ahead with a simple email says more about Lat than the student who wrote it.
"I was wondering if you...have any words of wisdom to impart upon me."
Prepare to go long and strong as a 1L, because you have to roll full models and bottles!

116 - Dont they steal underwear at GULC?
These pretzels are making me one hundred and thirty-thirdsty!
As YLS I rarely come down to the level of this 'blog' or weblog, however the scale of this nondenonative twaddle could not be ignored. Please understand that at YLS we do not differentiate between the Virginias and the GWs and the Appalachian States; they are all "other" law schools. Therefore there is little point to all this banter.

And then of course YLS is the other "law" school, since it's not law they teach there.

Damn...I'd hate to go to GW. This would be totally acceptable (though definitely perceived as gunnerish) at NU. I guess that's the Northwestern Difference(tm).
What does TTT mean?
What is a "gunner"?
The only thing surpassing Gunner's ignorance is that of many of the commenters.
GW bar passage rate in NY > GULC bar passage rate in NY
114 - Bingo.
Law school was such a drag b/c of all the two-time losers trying to make up for it in their mid-20s. Congrats on your anonymous take-down of a naive kid... guaranteed you wouldn't pull anything close to it in real life b/c you're an enormous vag.
I don't see what the big deal is. So a guy tries to get some help from the LR kids at a school where he needs to be at the top of his class to get a good biglaw job. Law school has a stupid stereotype that you should be a slacker and dare you not read a hornbook or try to get ahead in your class. Yet if you're paying 40K a year you better bust your ass and try to do your best, because otherwise you're wasting your time and a lot of money.
60, don't bring shame on our school by acting like a doucher.
UVa 2L.
129 - Thank you for pointing out the positive purpose of the tip, that 1Ls and potential law students should avoid requesting help in such a manner. Go meet the people and don't mass email strangers.
And for those who might think the tipster still ought not to have sent this in, don't hold it against the current GW LR senior editorial board, they're all excellent people.

If the email hadn't been passed along by someone on LR I wouldn't have found it as douchey thinking that perhaps they were just repulsed by this kid's smarm and gunner tendencies (I know I was), but they were in all likelihood gunners as well so they were probably just being assholes.
These pretzels are making me one fifty firsty.

Christ, I didn't even know what Law Review was until I was a 2L..

I know so many people who maintain they did nothing in law school and, yet, graduated magna. Utter bullshit for the vast majority of students.
Haha, poor kid. +1 for forwarder = prick. I'm glad I go to a relatively friendly school.
Law Review is nothing but a pain in the ass. I won't mention which one I'm on because it doesn't matter. I had a total of 3 interviewers even mention it, and the offer I accepted never mentioned it at all. Now I have to work my ass off all semester to write a comment on something I don't even care about so I don't risk losing the offer. Those that think they're better than others just because they're on law review need to learn the valuable skill of communicating with those who might not be as legally talented. I.e., regular joes and the rest of the law school population.
This kid sent out an email to try to get some help because he wanted to do well in law school. Who didn't want to do well / who wasn't scared to shit when they walked through the front doors? Perhaps he could have written the email a little more tactfully, but he surely doesn't deserve to be skewered on a legal blog.
I'm a hard gunnin' student like James T. Hart
Finished outlining 2 weeks before class start
I'm the #1 gunner!
(Wh-what, wh-what, what?)
The #1 gunner!

Rollie bags, firm swag, I'm an in-class striver
Editor, law review, gon' get all the offers
I'm the #1 gunna!

according to bar passage rates, GW > GULC
I think GW gunners are soooooo sexy.
GWU is a terrible school.

1. Gunner shows the type of initiative that will get him jobs and business.
2. Tipster is a tool, for posting this. And also an idiot for not recognizing a chance to get a free research project done.
I look forward to Gunner either 1) firing tipster, or 2) denying all his motions from the bench.
I have found that review is only important when an applicant interviews for clerkships, as judges generally want clerks with editing and substantive writing experience. I am 3L at a law school ranked in the T-14 Law school, moot court president, and near the top of my class. Yet, I failed to get a federal clerkship because I didn't have the "requisite" law review experience. Of course, there are exceptions, I just wasn't one of them. Maybe next year after I have some work experience under my belt.
Question about ranking / law schools: There is a general understanding that you shouldn't expect to get offers from top firms if you're at a regional school and don't have an exceptional class rank----
But can anybody refer me to any data of the liklihood of "lateral transfers" down the line? What do the top firms look for in hiring transfers? Is a degree from a regional school as much of a disadvantage for this as it was to start? (again, looking for numbers, studies, etc... though that might be difficult to trace...)
