Law Firm Merger Mania: Nixon Peabody + Thelen = Nixlen Thelpea?

law firm merger.jpgThelen has laid off attorneys and changed its name, the law firm equivalent of hitting the gym and getting a makeover. Now they’re back in the club and looking for a mate.

Leigh Jones of the National Law Journal reports:

Thelen and Nixon Peabody are in merger talks, with a possible agreement pending, according to sources close to the situation. The law firms have been in extensive talks, with Nixon Peabody leaders traveling to San Francisco to meet with Thelen leaders, according to two sources.

Wasn’t this the plot to the movie Made of Honor? Nixon plays the role of Dr. McDreamy, with its dulcet law firm song. Thelen is the cute platonic friend, who suddenly starts looking really hot when she’s about to get hitched to somebody else.

Given the amount of coverage ATL devotes to these two firms, we wholeheartedly endorse the pairing. Maybe we could convince them to adopt a firm mascot — Nixlen Kittens, anyone?

From the WSJ Law Blog entry on this same story:

"Today, however, the spotlight has swung back to Thelen (which rhymes with 'wheelin’,' not “failin’')."

If this is true, it SHOULD rhyme with "failin'."

TTThelen!

I'm confused. Generally a writer aiming for comedy will only combine two things into a jumble if they're funny.

For example: Did you hear that A&P and Stop & Shop are merging? Yeah, they're going to call it Stop & P.

How is Nixlen Thelpea funny?

Further, once again, you have to explain too much of your pop culture reference, which means it either a)isn't funny, or 2)isn't worth making because by the time it is explained it isn't funny anymore.

And finally, since there is absolutely nothing original presented in this TTT post (either in the form of commentary or primary reporting), why not just provide us a link to the National Law Journal, save us the bad jokes, and leave it alone?

Everyone's a winner at... Nixon Thelen?

Doesn't have a good ring to it. They should have gone with Pillsbury.

Two great firms make one outstanding firm.
This is a win-win situation, so everyone really is a winner at Nixon Thelen.
Best of luck to both firms.

Thelen sucks but Nixon Peabody does not. Let's be realistic here people.

17 - no they just simply get laid!

Isn't Nixon Peabody one of vault.com's best 20 law firms to work for, and one of Fortune Magazine's Top 100 Companies to work for?

As far as associates are concerned, Nixon is a good place.

avatar
21 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, September 5, 2008 1:17 PM

As far as associates are concerned (well, those that didn't get laid off, and not for the summers who've been screwed by circumstances), Thelen's a pretty good place as well. Partners who treat people with respect and decent to very good QOL. Hope this works out.

avatar
22 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, September 5, 2008 1:33 PM

A merger of two QOL places means that even though the merged firm would be 1100+ lawyers, it would still be a good QOL place. Question is, would Nixon Thelen prosper? Should the Thelen name be dropped in a merger? The construction law practice at Thelen would not be too happy about dropping the "Thelen" name.

Thelen WHO... Nixon WHO?
Is there something wrong with me in that I have never heard of either of these firms?

23: Where do you work that you wouldn't have?

avatar
25 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, September 5, 2008 1:44 PM

I'm thinking the Thelen name would be kept . . . Nixon Thelen has a decent ring to it, and for branding purposes in the areas Thelen has pull (primarily energy, construction and china, I guess) it makes sense to keep it. Maybe even Nixon Peabody Thelen, depending on the relative leverage.

Echoing 24's question. These firms are famous for being lame (Nixon) or terrible (Thelen).

27 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, September 5, 2008 1:57 PM

24 and 26:

Must be the difference in practice areas. Or could be that my firm doesn't normally deal with lame/terrible firms.
But then again I don't know considering we do deal with Cravath from time to time.

Good for Thelen and Nixon. That's one less TTT firm to worry about (in the reverse stock split theory).

Keep it up, guys. We still have a bunch to go:
Stroock
CWT
Winston
DLA

I never cease to be amazed at how almost every big firm out there - Thelen, Nixon, Winston, DLA, etc. is "TTT." All of those firms have lawyers and practice groups that are top notch. All firms have strengths and weaknesses.

And then all of the mid-size and small firms and government agencies - what a horrible fate for the prestige-obsessed! But then again, that is where you find litigators who actually litigate - like they might actually do a jury trial. Alone! Or maybe with one co-counsel instead of ten. And before their eighth year out of law school. But yeah, they usually don't get the big paycheck, and the all important prestige among the NY cognoscenti who know (and care deeply about) the difference between Cadwalader and Davis Polk. Get a life.

15, 16 & 20 must have been hired to say nice things about a TERRIBLE place to work. NP always hard at "work" when their name is at risk. Wonder what they do the other 10% of the time. I know it isn't keeping employees happy.

Any news on the possible merger? With Heller Ehrman's merger negotiations falling apart, and the carnage on Wall Street, does anyone think Nixon (or any other firm for that matter) would be truly interested in merging with Thelen?
