Nationwide No Offer Watch: Buchanan Ingersoll

bic layoffs no offers.jpgWhile we continue to pester firms about no offer information, it appears that one firm dipped significantly below the 90% threshold for summer associate offers, at least in the New York office.

Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney is another firm that has reported an oversubscribed summer associate class. That said, Buchanan Ingersoll spokesperson Lori Lecker reports that the summers were at least busy:

[W]e had more than enough work to keep all of our summer associates busy throughout the course of the program, and we received positive feedback from the class on the quality of work. We generated over 300 projects for our summers to work on this year.

Most firms don't bother to tout how much work their summer class had, but Buchanan is fighting specific reports that attorneys are struggling to make their billables firmwide. Just two weeks ago it was reported that barely a quarter of the firms 500 lawyers were on target, and that average associate hours had fallen below 1,650.

So the summers had work, but did they get jobs? More on that after the jump.

The firm extended offers to 13 summer associates overall. But in New York, only one out of five summers received an offer. Lecker characterized the sole offer as entirely consistent with what the Pittsburgh-based firm has done in the past.

Summers are not the only Buchanan people feeling a pinch. It's been widely reported that Buchanan has recently lost 35 attorneys.

We had received tips that more partners left this week, but Lecker denied further defections. "We lost no shareholders this week in any of our offices," she said.

While the firm maintains its commitment to growing in legal markets like New York and DC, the firm's recent struggles have more to do with decisions made outside of the northeast corridor. According to the Legal Times:

Unlike rival Pittsburgh firms Reed Smith and K&L Gates, the firm didn't trim its Pennsylvania growth in its push for a national presence. Instead, it merged with 120-lawyer Klett Rooney to dominate the Pennsylvania market and give itself the financial base to expand.

Remember not to judge an entire firm based on one office. But remember which offices traditionally hire only one summer per class.

Foley has always hired 1L's in pretty significant number, at least in the Milwaukee office. It's to try to sell people who are not from Wisconsin on Wisconsin, and to get hyper-talented people who go to one of the two Wisconsin law schools to stay in-state.

This is the worst lay-off/recession cycle that BigLaw has ever seen. It is setting terrible precedents (stare decisis) for future law students, firm reputations, and hiring. Reading these stories makes me want to crawl under a nice comforter and read a book about puppies.

BI's NYC office has always been a joke. The head of their "IP Lit" section left the NYC office last month and took some people with her, but she had no business. They pay way below market, particularly in NYC so anyone that would go there wouldn't be the best candidate.

As for GULC, I hope you are at least top 10%, bottom of the class is bottom of the class regardless of what school you went to. However, at the end of the day if your Dad got you into school, he will probably get you a job too.

Can I say something? I'm not T14 or anything? Ok, no objections? Great.

I go to a piece of shit school. Tier 3, no one knows we exist. However, I got Biglaw and make the same as the "I'm sooo much smarter than you, you should be honored to wipe your ass with my limp peice of lettuce off my $50 burger" folks on here. How you ask? Easy, if you go to a shit school only go if you have a kick ass scholarship and know you can be in the top 5%. I had a MS and worked for 3 years in research before going to lawschool. I got into T14 and went to a tier 3 because it was free. Smart or an imbecile, you decide. However, I make the same salary and bonuses as my HYS buddies, have minimal debt and don't care. If you have that attitude, fuck all the people on this board who are snobbish barf piles.

Some of the best partners I lknow went to shit schools. Also, some of the dumbest, most incompetent lawyers I've met have been T14. The drones on this site you consistently rant about this bullshit are 1L's who need to justify their existance to daddy about why they are still a leach. Don't listen to them law students.

Just my two cents.

Signed,

Suck it douchebags!!

37 is half right. There are still offers to give out after they know what the interest from their first round is, but Chicago is not doing this, they have aleady sent out no offers to a majority of their class.
