Skadden Rushes To Citi's Defense
You'd think Skadden attorneys would have better things to bill Citigroup for than running around after small-time advertisers. But, then again, there are an awful lot of Skadden attorneys.
Citi-Mobile is an advertising company that utilizes trucks as mobile billboards. Citigroup is a large commercial bank that is trying to ride out the current economic downturn. Skadden wants you to know the difference:
The much bigger Citi, which Skadden rather optimistically describes in court docs as "one of the largest and most renowned" banks in the world, is a little bit concerned that the public will think the financial giant decided to buy a bunch of trucks, paint them crazy colors, and make money by marketing roast beef subs and cameras to innocent pedestrians. So they're asking a court to prohibit Citi-Mobile (and its parent company Citi-Advertising) from using the hallowed "Citi" name.
For those playing along at home, that means Citi wants no part of a mildly annoying advertising campaign, yet they are willing to pay $20M/year for 20 years to lord their name over the New York Mets? How long before Skadden sues Mets owner Fred Wilpon for non-performance based on the theory that Citi contracted to name a "baseball field," instead of a cute park where little boys go to choke themselves to death?
Or maybe they'll just sue City Wok?

Citi's Lawyers Never Sleep [Citylife]

First to offer the Mets $21/year to lord his name over them.
$20 a year is a lot of $.
Even your mother doesn't like your posts.
I don't really care about the grammar or spelling on ATL posts, but I have noticed that Mystal tends to leave out works quite often. For example, forgetting "million" above. In other posts, left out crucial words like "not."
Double trouble, two of a kind - we both like girls with big behinds.
i don't care about grammar either, but i think a retarded person wrote that first sentence.
New York Mets to more than $400!
These City Mongolians are making me Thirsty!
Damn .. I wouldn't pay more than $13 for that.
Thanks Mystal, kick me when I'm down.
-Depressed Mets Fan.
Elie - I have been a regular reader and contributor to this site for a long time. You are a prime example of why Hofstra is far superior to Harvard. Take your subtle Yankees trolling elsewhere.
Go Mets. Go Jets. Go Pride.
Giants suck. Yankees suck. Harvard sucks. Elie sucks.

Hofstra Magna for EIC!!!
under-rated post
What's a Hofstra?
ATL is a lot like the Mets.
What's a Hofstra?
Is it like a GULC, but much worse?
HofstTTTTTTTTra?
What's a Hofstra?

Is it ABA accredited?

Seriously, never heard of it.
I almost forgot about Captain Hofstra.
Suck it, Hofstra. You and Elie are made for each other.

To summarize:
Donovan: Colonel! Citi is marketing roast beef subs!
Vogel: I think not Herr Donovan.
Donovan: Not that Citi! The other Citi!
[Much later]
Donovan: Skadden?! Is that the limit of your vision?! Skadden want to write itself into the Citigroup
legend and take on the world. Well, they're welcome. But I want Citi-Mobile. Skadden can have the world, but they can't take it with them. I'm going to be riding around in brightly colored trucks while they've gone the way of the dodo. The roast beef sandwich is mine, and you're going to get it for me.
[Even later]
Henry Jones Jr.: Only the penitent man will pass. Penitent. ...Penitent. Only the penitent man will pass. The penitent man is humble before God. The penitent man kneels before God. ELIE SUCKS!
Gentlemen at my legal preparatory academy, in moments of putative mirth, on certain occasions attempted to extract cheap humor from basic tenets of law pertaining to that species of intellectual property commonly known as the "trademark," but ultimately only exposed themselves as charlatans, in that their failure to undertstand the aforesaid basic tenets of trademarks. Such occurrences were viewed as sufficiently minor that their recordation was purely a matter of form, without the slightest indication of interest in fact being expressed in the same.
Hey 19 - not only is Hofstra ABA accredited, it is ranked in the top 100 in the country (and moving up the rankings), unlike the festering third tier toilet in decline from which you graduated. Moron.
I hate people who talk about Hofstra like it is a real school and some place you get to when Long Island flushes a toilet.
Oh, and I also hate people who talk about putative mirth.
suck it, mystal.
Do you think Elie (supported by others at ATL) screws up the posts intentionally? Perhpas he is taking a Howard stern approach--we hate his writing so much that we can't help but to read his posts. Genius I tell you.
Top 100 in the country? Big deal, I mean, are you kidding, you think that is something to brag about? Jackass!
I don't get the "angle" of this post and the attached article. What is the connection between the financial crisis and Citigroup protecting its intellectual property. This is totally missed in the post were Citi's advertising efforts of its own trade name are given as an example of why the suit is somehow meritless. To the contrary, the fact that Citi pays $20"M" to by naming a stadium is evidence that the name "Citi" has value and that Citi has paid a considerable amount of money to develop that value in the marketplace. The truck advertisers should be able to use benefit off of Citigroup's investment. So what's the point of being critical of Citi, much less their outside counsel? Sounds like both of they're doing what they're suppose to do. Unlike ATL.
I'm with 22 here.
I got into Hofstra Law with a 1.3 GPA from DumbFock Community College and 147 LSAT. But I graduated magna!
Isn't Hofstra where airplanes dump their sewage before landing at JFK?
Oh man, that shrimp I had earlier isn't sitting well with my stomach. Someone get me a trashcan, I'm about to hofstra.
Hey 27, you can only get an AA from community college and Hofstra Law requires a BA, idiot. When I went to Nassau Community College for a few classes, I was told expressly that you need at least a 2.0 to get into Hofstra undergrad, so you're trolling needs to stop.
Per wikipedia:
"Nassau Community College is seen by many as the elite two year public college in the United States, and was recently tied for first place in a national survey of two year colleges. Alumni often transfer to colleges such as Cornell, SUNY Stony Brook, Syracuse University and Hofstra, among other fine schools."
So there you have it, Nassau Community College is number 1, and you need at least a 2.0 out of there, so if you went to any lesser school, you'd need a lot more than a 1.3. Please just stop so I don't have to pwn you any further.
Wow, I was laughing so hard, I think that I just Hofstra'd in my pants. Can someone else brag about how their school is in the top 100.
HofstraMagna did not go to Hofstra. He is just trying to be the next Loyola2L
Hofstra Magna = Blatant Fordham trolling
also, subtle NYU Trolling
Elie --
FAIL on basic understanding of trademark law in analogizing paying to put one's mark on one product (intentional association and contractual right to terminate use of mark) with another product co-opting one's mark (free-riding and loss of ability to control mark's use).
33 - A recently compiled proprietary ranking actually had Hofstra ranked higher than Fordham, so I fail to see how anyone would ever want to troll for Fordham. It's a decent school, but it's no Hofstra.
http://abovethelaw.com/community/2008/05/top-nyc-area-law-schools.php
What a stupid, snarky post. Trademark owners protect their trademarks so they don't become deluded. Anyone who's gone to law school knows this.
All Long Island sewers lead to Hofstra.
36 - I'm pretty sure most law school students also know that one does not want one's trademark to become "diluted."
Echo 34. Isn't the reason that Ellie is EIC instead of Kash that he is supposed to have some knowledge of the law?
HofstraMagna, you are brilliant. I just checked out your previous posts and I laughed until I cried. Thank you, truly.
I support anything that can be done to make like difficult for the companies that block our roads with trucks driving around endlessly to display ads. Instead of paying for ad space on a building, they take advantage of a legal loophole and use the taxpayer-financed roads as a free advertising venue. They are scum.
Skadden is Skadden b/c of GULC. Remember that.
I almost thought for a second that hofstra actually did make it into T2. nice try....i still laugh when I think I considered applying to them at one point.
Hofstra is the biggest s%^&hole in NY. Half of their students fail the MPRE each semester.
where does hostra magna work? law school is a means to an end. if it got you a great job, then congratulations. You succeeded.
Where do other non-magna hofstrasses end up?
Being magna at Hofstra is like being assistant night shift manager at McDonalds.
Being magna at Hofstra is like finishing magna at the special olympics (reading competition).
Believe it or not, I may start an LLM in family law at the Hof in Fall 2009. HofstraMagna, I know you are starting at Zarb in Fall 2009. Would you like to share an apartment together?
Let's face it, there are thousands of parties using the term "CIT" which have co-existed with Citigroup's use for many years. How will they explain not going after all these other parties? This is an example of big corporations bullying smaller companies. I hope Skadden runs up Citigroup's bills for this playground push and shove.

You wrote, "Hey 19 - not only is Hofstra ABA accredited, it is ranked in the top 100 in the country (and moving up the rankings)."
However, next year, US News may include part-time students in calculating UGPA/LSAT. As Hofstra relegates many of its students with low UGPA/LSAT to the part-time program for their first year, this is likely to push the Hof back down to T3.
