3L: Ready For Some Action

lonely lawyer wants a job.JPGWe’ve discussed the terrible market for 3Ls, but one D.C.-area law student is taking matters into her own hands. From the source of all that is wonderful, the Craigslist personals:

Are you a lonely lawyer? - 24

Maybe we can do something about that. I’m an ambitious 3L at a good school, and I’d really like to land a job at a terrific firm. Unfortunately, my grades and the job market aren’t the best. Ideally, I would like to meet a cute hiring partner for “networking.” I’m sexy, petite, and very fun to be with. If you’re interested, please tell me a bit about yourself. I’d be happy to exchange pics.

Why are you looking to score a lawyer-man on craigslist? ATL would be happy to post your pictures. And we know that hiring partners and recruiting coordinators read the site regularly.

Still, we admire your willingness to do “what it takes” to secure a job in this difficult market. Sexy, petite, networking is actually great training for your eventual life as a Biglaw associate.

Out of work 3Ls take note: there is always more than one way to get a job.

Folks at my firm call me Client 9. Why don't you meet me in my office which is room 871 of the Mayflower Hotel.

Why worry about a job at all? If you can land a wealthy attorney, just go that route. That way, you can stay cute, petite, fun and still get your loans paid off. If you really want to work, then you can go and do some non-profit or government work for "fun money."

Uhh . . . no sweetie. As MooseBurger Barbie has learned the hard way, just inserting "community activist" into a random insult is rarely funny or convincing to people who don't screech at cameramen to "Sit Down, Boy!" and breath through their mouths. Good luck with that, though!

***

normally i'd ignore 11 & 17's trolling, but Palin disrespected a lot of hardworking people with that crack about community organizing. community organizing isn't necessarily a partisan enterprise, and plenty of conservatives engage in it also. if you want to get things done without leaving it to an expensive & ineffective government bureaucracy, you organize. duh.

It would be completely possible that this is the same girl posting the CL ad as the girl posting on that blog. She was a 1L in 2006 (I draw this from her April post about Equal Protection; that would be about the time during 1L year she would learn that stuff).
Except her last post was that she was going to stop seeing clients because she found a regular sugar daddy; I'm guessing that didn't work out well for her.

32, I totally disagree. Lat and Elie have totally different writing styles. Lat's posts are playful, witty, warm, and polished. Elie seems more cynical than Lat's to the point of almost seeming a little bitter, and his posts are riddled with typos. Elie's also a big fan of the single sentence paragraph. That said, I think Elie will get into his groove eventually.

28/31 - what does pwned mean?

avatar
56 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, October 9, 2008 2:58 PM

Sorry 50, but "community organizer" is not a synonym for public service, or even community activism. "Community organizing" is not clearly defined, but it certainly has a connotation that is, almost always, leftist and outside of the mainstream. For many, it also connotes "not having a job."

It is notable that the Obama literature does not expound very much on his community organizing. To the extent that his books do discuss it, he actually admits that it was a pretty ineffective way to get things done. So we have two facts: (1) no one can quite define what it is that Obama did as a community organizer; and (2) his work does not appear to have produced any good or benefit.

Does this mean Obama is not qualified? Does it mean he's a radical? No, and no. But the community organizing doesn't exactly help his resume. If it did, I am sure his campaign would have told us a whole lot about the wonderful things he did. But they haven't.

It's a clear weakness. Organizing it's not sounds kind of silly.

61 and 64 -- note that I offered no defense of McCain, Republicans, etc. Note also that you've said nothing to refute my points. I partly understand your confusion. My comment was probably better addressed to 29, rather than 50.

And 64 -- what "talking points"? But sure, I'll take the bait. It's pretty easy to knock McCain for siding with Bush's policies in many instances. Anyone who takes a stand on something opens themselves to criticism. So be it.

Obama has yet to take a leadership role on anything as an elected official. He has authored no bills of note; has championed no particular causes or initiatives of note; has voted entirely along party lines, speaking only after his party leaders have set the party's agenda. In fact, in every stage of his impressive career, Obama's performance is noticeably lacking in actual accomplishments. It is essentially a blank slate. The best we can say is, basically, he's done no harm.

That's nice, I guess. And it's not a definitive reason not to vote for him. I personally believe he still shows a lot of promise. But again, these weaknesses linger, and any attempts to explore them are met with derision. This is why the race is still as close as it is.
