Associate Life Survey: Office Politics?
Back in February, our ATL / Lateral Link survey on politics in the workplace found that 74% of you were discussing politics in the workplace, but less than 3% of you felt any need to conform to a particular political view.
At the time, 20% of respondents said that their fellow associates had tried to convince them to vote for someone, and about 15% said that an associate had asked them to contribute to a campaign.
But those were the days of Hillary and Huckabee.
Now that we’re down to John McCain and That One, what do office politics look like today? Is there more pressure to attend events? Vote a certain way? Make a contribution?
Let’s find out.
Update: This survey is now closed. Click here for the results.

5, thanks for the real news, as opposed to what passes for it on this blog. But you seem to be confusing two completely different schools -- Penn and Penn State. Or are you joking?
8, what does it matter whether you add state to the name or not? It's the same school either way...
8 - As 9 said, Penn = Penn State since the merger. There now seem to be two campuses, one in Philly and one in something called "Happy Valley."
On the origin of Penn's "Happy Valley," I can see why some would chose it over the Philly campus (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_College,_Pennsylvania):
"Happy Valley" is sometimes used as shorthand for State College, Pennsylvania. Commentators referring to Penn often give the location as "Happy Valley" rather than mentioning State College or the specific campus facility. In a survey conducted in the late 1980s by Psychology Today, State College was ranked as one of the least stressful places in the United States. A more recent rating put State College 19th among "50 Smart Places to Live[1]." The same source states: "Sperling's BestPlaces research group has previously ranked State College the No.1 safest small city in America, and Forbes, thanks in large part to the tremendous amount of research conducted at the University, listed State College among the top 10 smaller metro areas in which to start a career or business[2]." In 2007, CNN Money said State College was the number one "single" city based on percentage of unmarried people living there.
We know that partners at K&E discuss politics! (and seem to have plenty of people on both sides of the aisle).
I'm confused. I've been reading this blog for a few weeks now and will be applying to law schools next fall. I always thought UPenn and Penn St. were different schools. Did the law schools really merge???? Is it still a good law school?
At my Big Law NYC firm, a partner named Marc (won't use his last name) in the white collar group called George W. Bush a moron at a firm event. The partner was a former assistant US attorney and presumably should have known better. Instead of any kind of criticism, there were a few laughs and just generally silence.
My partner mentor as a summer in my one lunch with him brought up politics and was very liberal and anti-Bush and presumed that I thought likewise. At another summer lunch, a partner made a huge deal about people in middle-America voting based on social issues.
In general, it is tough to be a Republican in Big Law in New York City. For whatever reason it is considered okay to discriminate based on political affiliation.
13, whether Penn/Penn State are separate schools, and whether it/they are ivy or state, doesn't really matter. It/they aren't Harvard or Yale.
15 - ...or Boalt, Michigan or Virginia, for that matter, and never will be, regardless of what US News tries to get college students to believe.
5 Here.
Yes, Penn State and UPenn ARE two different schools, but the *joke* on this blog is that they are one and the same and that Coach Paterno coaches at the school that Ben Franklin started (Univ. of Penn).
My friends, Penn is a *great* school!
But UPENN State is better, does that clear it up "my friends" ;)
Re: the guest comment posted as number 14:
You are an idiot for even first-naming the partner. You presumably should know better. I seriously hope you were offended enough to decline any offer you may have received.
Is anyone else tired of these stupid cat pictures?
