Case Western School Of Law Dean Falls On Sword

case western law school us news.JPGGary J. Simson, best known for his incessant bitching about the U.S. News rankings, is stepping down as dean of the Case Western Reserve School of Law:

We write to inform you that Gary J. Simson has agreed to resign as dean, effective at the end of this academic semester. Starting today, Robert H. Rawson Jr. will serve as Special Advisor to the Provost for the School of Law. Once, Mr. Simson steps down, Mr. Rawson will become interim dean of the school.

Mr. Rawson is a partner of the Jones Day law firm and served for 15 years as Partner in Charge of its Cleveland office. A Rhodes Scholar who graduated from Princeton University before earning his Juris Doctorate from Harvard University, he is highly regarded as a litigator, with particular expertise in antitrust matters. He also has deep appreciation and understanding of higher education, having spent 20 years on the Board of Trustees of Princeton, including 13 as chair of the board's executive committee. We are deeply grateful both to Mr. Rawson and to the Jones Day law firm for this opportunity to tap his expertise during this time of transition.

We will launch a national search to fill the dean's position, and note that Mr. Rawson has indicated he has no interest in being a candidate for the permanent post.

Simson has had a somewhat rocky tenure at Case Western. As one tipster put it:

Simson has been at the school for just over 2 years and has had an "uneven" response from the larger community, at best...

Simson was the dean who invited Ohio AG Marc "Dannimal House" Dann to come as a commencement day speaker. That offer was later rescinded. But he'll be best remembered around these parts for his full frontal attack on the U.S. News rankings.

Gary, we hardly knew ye. The world can always use another Brian Leiter.

Read the full departure memo after the jump.

We will launch a national search to fill the dean's position, and note that Mr. Rawson has indicated he has no interest in being a candidate for the permanent post. Members of the search committee will be drawn from faculty, staff, students, and alumni. We are seeking committee members who are dedicated to the best interest of the law school and who have earned the confidence of the law school community. If you would like to nominate people to serve on the search committee, please forward their names to [Redacted] by 5 p.m. Wednesday, October 22. Within your emails, please provide your reasons for recommending those individuals.

Mr. Simson will remain on the faculty as the Joseph C. Hostetler-Baker & Hostetler Professor of Law. We are grateful to him for his service to the school, and note in particular his accomplishments in raising the academic stature of the entering class and securing two significant gifts for the school's social justice initiative.

This law school is full of people of great talent, dedication, and intellect. We have confidence in its future - and in all of you.

This can be a really nasty/petty blog. As a Case Western 2L, I believe that most of us think that Dean Simson is a great guy, but just not the kind of dean our school needs right now. This is an unfortunate situation for the school, its students, and Dean Simson, but the pettiness and thoughtless vitriol of many of these comments is insensitive and unwarranted; as #22 notes, students at Case with good grades get great jobs, just as I am sure that the good students at places like Cornell get good jobs, not to mention students in the precious top 10 or 20. For anyone with the audacity to think Case isn't a "real" law school, whatever that means, I assume they are one of the chosen at a school with a higher ranking than us, in which case they should be thankful that poor little fake peon law schools like us make it easier for students at "real" schools to hide the fact that they're assholes behind their big-name schools.

As for ripping on Cleveland, how original of you. If you have a fiscally viable plan for revitalizing a city utterly debilitated by their industrial history, why don't you give our mayor a call, as I'm sure he would appreciate your infinite wisdom. I don't love living here, but I also recognize the enormous challenge city leadership faces in turning the city around.

Dean Simson was a good guy and he likely would have been a great Dean but for some members of the law school's faculty who put their own agenda above the school and its students (I am mostly referring to the International Law crew). I suppose the Dean could have been a better leader, but those guys never gave him a chance. He was not as flashy as the would have liked and supported outmoded concepts like "social justice" over counter-terrorism. I'm going to add Simson's fall to the list of reasons not to donate to Case.

I was on my law school's Jessup moot court team and we did pretty well in the North East (New York- Maine) qualifiers. Then we went to the International rounds and watched the Case Western Team win it all- they were amazing, there wa a girl on the team who won the best speaker prize for the finals- Margeaux Day, I think-and she must have been the best moot court speaker I have ever seen. The Australian team they were up against in the final were very good, but it was a pretty unanimous decision....

Bottom line- they are a real law school all right. Everyone takes part in Jessup- From Harvard to Oxford but these guys deservedly won it last year- check ilsa.org

avatar
54 Posted by guest | Permalink Wednesday, October 15, 2008 4:09 PM

25: that's a slightly different issue. My point was that the top students at case (I was thinking top 15%) are as good as run-of-the-mill top-14 students. The same is actually true at a lot of lower-ranked schools. The tops of the classes at those schools tend to be occupied by people who had more prestigious options but turned them down for other reasons, or otherwise faced financial, family, or geographic constraints.

Your point is that it is hard for even top Case students to compete nationally, and that's true. Case is admittedly a regional school, and reputation matters in Biglaw. No surprises there.

Students from Case are at big law firms all over (firms like Jones Day, Skadden, Squire Sanders, Pillsbury, Ropes & Gray, Arnold & Porter, Akin Gump, etc.) and clerkships and government jobs. Case may be ranked in the 50's or 60's but it's well-respected at law firms and other legal employers and the students go on to do quite well. And it's especially well-respected in the midwest. Second time on this blog ever, but felt the need to write. I would be foolish to think my words will have any impact on the modus operandi of this blog. Its more likely that they will be scrutinized for usage and grammer errors to disparage me and my school than anything. Luckily if it passes that test, ad hominen attacks are up next.

I think a better name for this blog would be Schadenfreude (sp?) as the only two times I have visited this site were b/c someone sent me a link about the fallout from negative story and I read pathetic arguments, rampant superiority complexes, and useless jockeying for prestige on a site with anonymous users.

I get that insults are a major part of blogs and think some of the one lawyer have some wit. And yes, I love "deadspin" and other blogs and get the fun of mocking celebrities and sports scandals and politiicans. However, out of curiosity, to those posters from better schools, top firms, better pedigrees, etc.,
what do you get out of bashing lower schools. You absolutely are more likely to enjoy the benefits of your relative position.

This is the like the Yankees posting on the Royal's chats how hopeless they are.

Does it insult you that they even try to exist or is that their numbers increase the pool of lawyers nationally, and will affect average compensation.

If those are your concerns, never fear, we are so ignorant and unworthy of top legal jobs that even if we miraculously fooled these firms and judges into hiring us, we will probably get cut at the first hint of financial straits or gross incompetence, so it probably shouldn't affect you. We could never compete for top jobs and will be run of the legal job market soon enough.

Cheers,
Case 2L

p.s. I am eagerly awaiting for "can't we all just get along cracks", or some insult to my LSAT, grades, background, Cleveland, or anything available. Hopefully, I can understand them or get someone to dumb it down for me. Please feel free to vindicate yourself at my expense.

By way of background, I'm a partner on the hiring committee at one of the top 2 law firms in Chicago, and have always been a fan of Case and its law school (although I attended neither). Admittedly, my firm's hiring criteria are rather strict for Case (as with Ohio State, Wisconsin, Iowa, and similar "ranked" or statured schools), notwithstanding, we still regard Case as an excellent law school. Moreover, I personally believe that, unlike most other similarly statured schools at the moment, Case has an excellent platform from which to improve its national status among more competitive students and consequently employers.
Call me nuts for breaking with the norm, but I think what Case needs, in terms of a dean, is not another top academic, but rather a more skilled business-lawyer - one who can appreciate the key factors at play and design and implement initiatives to impact the bottom line - both on the supply (ie, potential students with competitive LSAT and GPA marks) and demand (top law firm) angles. I can go into more detail, but what's at play here is simply the success of a business - and while it's critical to have the input from the academic lawyers who are key to this particular business (ie, the professors), what is required is a business lawyer -- one who is sensitive to the key issues at play and posesses a track-record of implenting initiatives which positively impact the bottom-line goals of an enterprise.

OH BE STILL MY HEART, Case will drop another few ranking spots. Was top 50, now top 100 - but who cares, it won't be top-14. Too bad not everyone can be like Michigan have one LSAT admissions route and another GPA admissions route to buoy reported numbers - because, after all, function is functionless without form, amirite?

We need to sweat rankings because there's no other way to differentiate - we all read the same shitty cases from the same shitty books, spacing out to very similar professors, whether it's Yale or Florida Coastal. Rankings ensure we can not only be elitist pricks to the public, but within our own community as well. At least until it's socially acceptable for me to pull my dick out for you to measure.

But why bother being so pretentious? It's a crumbling facade. Even as Wall Street begins to look more and more like the Thunderdome, lawyers still aren't as wealthy, important and intelligent as we'd have the world believe. There's not any special dignity in practicing law (and indeed not much at all), contrary to what the pedants and snobs here scream. In fact, the mere existence of this site more than confirms the lack of dignity. And that's not because they should have stopped accrediting law schools after the first 14. It's because there are too many bullshitters defaulting to law school when they realize they spent 22 years learning to do nothing - which creates a market for a shit-ton of schools, which churn out a shit-ton of lawyers. Who are mostly spoiled losers whose parents lubed the asshole of life so their lesser offspring might retain some shred of the prestige associated with the parents' brains and industry. So if you're at a blueblood school and eligible for the patent bar, have your CPA, made your own money during any of the many bubbles, et cetera, my hat's off to you. You're welcome to hit me up when you want to start a practice. But I'm willing to bet most of the trolls around here would be underqualified to flip burgers. Even if you can write really, really good poetry. Just sayin.

I foresaw this meltdown and transferred after my 1L year. I admit the Profs there are adequate, but overall, the school is on its way down. If it drops another 20 points this year, I wouldn't be surprised. To those who are there now, I wish you the best.

Case has taken an absolute PR beating in Ohio for its crap ass bar passage rate--cross-town TTT public school Cleveland State has kicked Case's ass the past few rounds.

A beautiful thing.

Last Thoughts on Dean Simpson

When your head gets twisted and your mind grows numb
When you think you're too old, too young, too smart or too dumb
When you're laggin' behind an' losin' your pace
In the slow-motion crawl or life's busy race
No matter whatcha doin' if you start givin' up
If the wine don't come to the top of your cup
If the wind got you sideways it's one hand holdin' on
And the other starts slippin' and the feelin' is gone
And your train engine fire needs a new spark to catch it
And the wood's easy findin' but you're lazy to fetch it
And your sidewalk starts curlin' and the street gets too long
And you start walkin' backwards though you know that it's wrong
And lonesome comes up as down goes the day
And tomorrow's mornin' seems so far away
And you feel the reins from your pony are slippin'
And your rope is a-slidin' 'cause your hands are a-drippin'
And your sun-decked desert and evergreen valleys
Turn to broken down slums and trash-can alleys
And your sky cries water and your drain pipe's a-pourin'
And the lightnin's a-flashin' and the thunder's a-crashin'
The windows are rattlin' and breakin' and the roof tops are shakin'
And your whole world's a-slammin' and bangin'
And your minutes of sun turn to hours of storm
An' to yourself you sometimes say
"I never knew it was gonna be this way
Why didn't they tell me the day I was born?"

And you start gettin' chills and you're jumpin' from sweat
And you're lookin' for somethin' you ain't quite found yet
And you're knee-deep in dark water with your hands in the air
And the whole world's watchin' with a window peek stare
And your good gal leaves and she's long gone a-flyin'
And your heart feels sick like fish when they're fryin'
And your jackhammer falls from your hands to your feet
But you need it badly an' it lays on the street
And your bell's bangin' loudly but you can't hear its beat
And you think your ears mighta been hurt
Your eyes've turned filthy from the sight-blindin' dirt
And you figured you failed in yesterday's rush
When you were faked out an' fooled while facin' a four flush
And all the time you were holdin' three queens
It's makin you mad, it's makin' you mean
Like in the middle of Life magazine
Bouncin' around a pinball machine
And there's something on your mind that you wanna be sayin'
That somebody someplace oughta be hearin'
But it's trapped on your tongue, sealed in your head
And it bothers you badly when your layin' in bed
And no matter how you try you just can't say it
And you're scared to your soul you just might forget it
And your eyes get swimmy from the tears in your head
An' your pillows of feathers turn to blankets of lead
And the lion's mouth opens and you're starin' at his teeth
And his jaws start closin' with you underneath
And you're flat on your belly with your hands tied behind
And you wish you'd never taken that last detour sign
You say to yourself just what am I doin'
On this road I'm walkin', on this trail I'm turnin'
On this curve I'm hangin'
On this pathway I'm strollin', this space I'm taking
And this air I'm inhaling?
Am I mixed up too much, am I mixed up too hard
Why am I walking, where am I running
What am I saying, what am I knowing
On this guitar I'm playing, on this banjo I'm frailing
On this mandolin I'm strumming, in the song I'm singing,
In the tune I'm humming, in the words that I'm thinking
In the words I'm writing
In this ocean of hours I'm all the time drinking
Who am I helping, what am I breaking
What am I giving, what am I taking?
But you try with your whole soul best
Never to think these thoughts and never to let
Them kind of thoughts gain ground
Or make your heart pound
But then again you know when they're around
Just waiting for a chance to slip and drop down
'Cause sometimes you hear 'em when the night time come creeping
And you fear they might catch you sleeping
And you jump from your bed, from the last chapter of dreamin'
And you can't remember for the best of your thinkin'
If that was you in the dream that was screaming
And you know that's somethin' special you're needin'
And you know there's no drug that'll do for the healing
And no liquor in the land to stop your brain from bleeding

You need somethin' special
You need somethin' special, all right
You need a fast flyin' train on a tornado track
To shoot you someplace and shoot you back
You need a cyclone wind on a stream engine howler
That's been banging and booming and blowing forever
That knows your troubles a hundred times over
You need a Greyhound bus that don't bar no race
That won't laugh at your looks
Your voice or your face
And by any number of bets in the book
Will be rolling long after the bubblegum craze
You need something to open up a new door
To show you something you seen before
But overlooked a hundred times or more
You need something to open your eyes
You need something to make it known
That it's you and no one else that owns
That spot that you're standing, that space that you're sitting
That the world ain't got you beat
That it ain't got you licked
It can't get you crazy no matter how many times you might get kicked
You need something special, all right
You need something special to give you hope
But hope's just a word
That maybe you said, maybe you heard
On some windy corner 'round a wide-angled curve

But that's what you need man, and you need it bad
And your trouble is you know it too good
'Cause you look an' you start gettin' the chills
'Cause you can't find it on a dollar bill
And it ain't on Macy's window sill
And it ain't on no rich kid's road map
And it ain't in no fat kid's fraternity house
And it ain't made in no Hollywood wheat germ
And it ain't on that dim-lit stage
With that half-wit comedian on it
Rantin' and ravin' and takin' your money
And you thinks it's funny
No, you can't find it neither in no night club, no yacht club
And it ain't in the seats of a supper club
And sure as hell you're bound to tell
No matter how hard you rub
You just ain't a-gonna find it on your ticket stub
No, it ain't in the rumors people're tellin' you
And it ain't in the pimple-lotion people are sellin' you
And it ain't in a cardboard-box house
Or down any movie star's blouse
And you can't find it on the golf course
And Uncle Remus can't tell you and neither can Santa Claus
And it ain't in the cream puff hairdo or cotton candy clothes
Ain't in the dime store dummies an' bubblegum goons
And it ain't in the marshmallow noises of the chocolate cake voices
That come knocking and tapping in Christmas wrapping
Sayin' ain't I pretty and ain't I cute, look at my skin,
Look at my skin shine, look at my skin glow,
Look at my skin laugh, look at my skin cry,
When you can't even sense if they got any insides
These people so pretty in their ribbons and bows
No, you'll not now or no other day
Find it on the doorsteps made of paper maché
And inside of the people made of molasses
That every other day buy a new pair of sunglasses
And it ain't in the fifty-star generals and flipped-out phonies
Who'd turn you in for a tenth of a penny
Who breathe and burp and bend and crack
And before you can count from one to ten
Do it all over again but this time behind your back, my friend,
The ones that wheel and deal and whirl and twirl
And play games with each other in their sand-box world
And you can't find it either in the no-talent fools
That run around gallant
And make all the rules for the ones that got talent
And it ain't in the ones that ain't got any talent but think they do
And think they're fooling you
The ones that jump on the wagon
Just for a while 'cause they know it's in style
To get their kicks, get out of it quick
And make all kinds of rnoney and chicks
And you yell to yourself and you throw down your hat
Saying, "Christ, do I gotta be like that?
Ain't there no one here that knows where I'm at
Ain't there no one here that knows how I feel
Good God Almighty, that stuff ain't real":

No, but that ain't your game, it ain't your race
You can't hear your name, you can't see your face
You gotta look some other place
And where do you look for this hope that you're seekin'
Where do you look for this lamp that's a-burnin'
Where do you look for this oil well gushin'
Where do you look for this candle that's glowin'
Where do you look for this hope that you know is there
And out there somewhere
And your feet can only walk down two kinds of roads
Your eyes can only look through two kinds of windows
Your nose can only smell two kinds of hallways
You can touch and twist
And turn two kinds of doorknobs
You can either go to the church of your choice
Or you go to Brooklyn State Hospital

You find God in the church of your choice
You find Dean Simpson in Cleveland, Ohio
And though it's only my opinion
I may be right or wrong
You'll find them both
In Grand Canyon
Sundown

Wow! Some of these comments are truly awful. I'm a Case grad. I won't pretend I could have gotten into a better law school - I spent 4 years drowned in beer. But, I made the most of my time in law school, graduated in the top 15% and landed an in-house job. Now, when deals come around the folks at the top NYC law firms work with me. And guess what? They have to be nice to me because I'm the client. So, you can disrespect the school all you want, if it makes you feel better...but you may still end up working for an alum some day. Hope your more diplomatic in real life.
