Morning Docket 10.22.08

[Ed. Note: Eliza Gray is a new writer for Above the Law. She graduated from Harvard and after a six-month stint in Brussels covering European Union politics at the European Voice, she moved back to New York to pursue a journalism career. She and Kash will be alternating Morning Docket responsibilities.]

* Remember that astronaut who drove across country to confront her ex-boyfriend, wearing diapers so that she wouldn’t have to make any pit stops? Lisa Nowak returned to court yesterday. [The New York Times]

If you pay for use of photos then you don't have to put up with that pesky iStockPhotoTM copyright watermark.

HELLO MY INTERNET FRIENDS HOW ARE YOU TODAY?

Seriously, 10 is right. Did you miss the day they taught possessive of proper nouns in 6th grade English? Apparently not, since you got the possessive of Spears right.

And 11, if you want a pic, look here: http://abovethelaw.com/2008/10/hey_atl_has_female_bloggers_an.php

Hint: It's not Kash.

How bad are job prospects at Harvard that they keep sending grads to ATL?

Or, alternatively, how uncreative is Elie that he doesn't think we'll realize that he's "Eliza"?

It would have been so so so much better if you had said "Nuttingho" instead of "Nottingho." Really a wasted opportunity.

If only Nottingham WERE from SF.... Harvard isn't big on grammar, huh?

avatar
22 Posted by guest | Permalink Wednesday, October 22, 2008 9:41 AM

This is a little girlie gossip HLS website.

"First" "Pretzels" "your grammar is wrong". Nothing more than a race to bitch slap Elie first.

I am impressed - I come to check the site for news, and instead find that the site is creating more work for me. Thanks, ATL, for giving me that extra .5 billable hour I needed today. Sending C&D's is always the highlight of my morning.

iStockPhoto does not allow commercial reuse of its preview images. Their licensing terms are fair, and the cost is surprisingly affordable.

24 Posted by guest | Permalink Wednesday, October 22, 2008 9:47 AM

It's absurdly TTT for the blog to not buy the rights to that image. Doing so would cost less than ten dollars.

ATL can't buy the photo because Ellie spends all the money on 10 course lunches and absurdly large afternoon snacks.

avatar
28 Posted by guest | Permalink Wednesday, October 22, 2008 9:57 AM

26: Wrong. The giant lunches and obesity-inducing snacks are the reason ATL can't afford a proof reader.

His morning dosage of a dozen BK Enormous Omelet Sandwiches is why they can't afford the photo.

Why do people waste spots at Harvard Law to then never practice law and go pursue journalism or opening a bakery or something? What a waste to the people that would have actually used their Harvard Law education.

avatar
41 Posted by guest | Permalink Wednesday, October 22, 2008 10:18 AM

39 - Do you disagree with that view? It really isn't a layoff if all they are doing is kicking out the shitty people to make room for the next crop. Don't all law firms do that unless they are in a growth period?

avatar
42 Posted by guest | Permalink Wednesday, October 22, 2008 10:43 AM

Elie is experiencing a "stealth layoff" of his own - notice how he's being phased out of every major section ....rightfully so

avatar
43 Posted by guest | Permalink Wednesday, October 22, 2008 10:47 AM

To do what, 30? Become an associate at a law firm. Talk about a lack of imagination.

What I find deplorable is how worthless this website has become. When times were good, this site was great for reporting bonus/raise info, which information was not previously publicly available. Presumably ATL accomplished this by listening to tipsters. The transparency resulting from such reporting made ATL noteworthy.

Things have certainly changed and not for the better. The only layoffs reported by ATL have been reported elsewhere first and ATL has apparently made little or no effort to expose stealth layoffs despite numerous tips. Updates on marital unions of the northeastern elite aside, the only thing this website is good for is creating transparency where none existed before. ATL has failed and it's a damn shame.

Don't even get me started on Elie. He manifests no indication of above-average intelligence and, what's worse, is sloppy as hell.

So why is a non-lawyer joining ATL? Can't Elie find a law student or unemployed/underemployed law school graduate?

avatar
48 Posted by guest | Permalink Wednesday, October 22, 2008 11:28 AM

As a loyal reader I have to say something in defense of this site. What is up with these stupid comments? I thought they would eventually die down, but apparently not. Apart from being entertaining, ATL (if only by shining a light) is pushing law firms to do the right thing. 45: Simply completely disagree. Do you actually read this site?? While it's nice to speculate about positive things (bonuses etc), ATL continues to expose all sorts of below board cr*p law firms are pulling in this economy. I firmly believe e.g. that there are summers who have received offers solely because ATL is all over this stuff and firms realize they can’t just slink around in the shadows smacking people around. Maybe if you actually read the site regularly you would have noticed that ATL is constantly reporting/providing updates and "transparency". What I find bemusing, and annoying, is your comment.

avatar
54 Posted by guest | Permalink Wednesday, October 22, 2008 3:45 PM

@ 45,
Bonuses / raises might be reported by tipsters that received those bonuses or raises.
Who is in a position to report prospective layoffs? Do you think that a lot of decision making partners read and send tips to this site?

You are a crybaby douche.

Stop reading this site, or at least stop posting.

Singular nouns that end in s take an apostrophe, not an apostrophe-s. Stevens', not Stevens's.
