No more posts today? Really?? I mean, 99% of your audience is working, so wouldn't it make sense to play to your audience?
Law firms are open. Markets are open. Dealbreaker's open. Old Country Buffet is open. Where's Elie? You guessed it, he's getting down with OCB.
MysTTTal
First to say FIRST, even on an off day!
Thanks 2: MysTTTal = lazy.
I'm at NYU and we have school but our undergrads do not. Any other law students at school today?
Not all law firms are open. Mine isn't. Yet here I am.
Yes, celebrate the holiday for a man whose actions led to the death of 90%+ of an entire hemisphere's people. As if genocide weren't enough for them, the Spanish helped institutionalize the African slave trade in the Americas.
What a great role model to have.
6 - Yes. All of us.
What exactly is the "spirit" of Columbus Day?
What a lame excuse for sitting your pajama-wearing fat butt on your couch waching soap operas and eating Chinese take out all day instead of working.
This is going to be one of the most important days in US financial history, and you're taking the day off?
MysTTTal has been taking the past couple months off- what's another day?
6--Even the public law schools are in class today.
Seriously Elie-disappointing!
MysTTTal
Who is the PUBLISHER you speak off and he does he giveth such bad encouragement!
Back when this blog was actually entertaining I may have cared that it wasn't posting on a day when most attorneys work, but now that it sucks, I can't say that I care.
8: Nevermind that the Spanish (which Columbus wasn't) never could have gotten a foothold in the New World without the help of locals. In the siege of Tenochtitlan only about 2% of the Spanish army was Spanish. The rest were natives who preferred the Spanish to the Azteks.
And it's not like there wasn't slavery in the Americas before the Spanish arrived, and it's not like Africans weren't slaves in Africa to other Africans. While slavery is clearly bad, is it really worse to move slaves from one continent to another? The descendants of slaves in the Americas are fairing a lot better now than their African counterparts. And how about the good things the Spanish brought to the Americas, like horses and metal workings and THE WHEEL? Losing 90% of your population might be worth it to get technology like THE WHEEL.
PS: Where's the outrage over the Mongolians carrying the black death along the silk road and killing half of the population in Europe?
Gentlemen at the legal preparatory academy with which I was once affiliated periodically elected to create illusory days of celebration and other holidays, the purposes for which were not readily apparent some 516 years after the occurrence of the events giving rise to the aforementioned holiday. The gentlemen would, upon celebration of this day, reflect upon mysteries both explicit and inherent rather than conduct or otherwise engage in their ordinary labors. The aforementioned gentlemen's failure to turn the wheels of commerce in the normal fashion led to other consequences unforseen, including the cessation of the publication delivery of certain news and tawdry gossip that was, at most times, at least tangentially related to the pratice of law. These events were not viewed as particularly consequential, other than by certain members of the trolletariat.
Comment of the day to #2!
Kash, I'll cut you some slack on taking today off after the weekend you had.
Elie, I have to say I'm disappointed in you.
MysTTTal
17 - nice wikipedia research. After 8 minutes on the interwebs you've decided that our brand of slavery is better than their brand?
$5 says that Elie took the day off so he could drive up to Canada and eat Thanksgiving turkey.
17 = Recist of the day. STFU.
no class today, did not have class last Thursday either.
/yay for jewish holidays
$60B lawsuit because your $2B purchase fell through.
Is Roy Pearson working legal at Citigroup now?
Ditto 8. I reject this holiday.
And you commenters are terrible. Not only have you demonstrated racism, but you even make fun of Elie's obvious health problem. Get it together. I'm not sure which is worse, the typo talk or the fat jokes.
i'm still here...working on my mail merge. no columbus day for a nervous T-10 1L. :(
-nervous T-10 1L
27 - driving to Canada to eat turkey is not a health problem. its just being a ridiculous turkey craved loser.
Ironically, Palin's Troopergate woes may only have begun. There is also an ongoing ethics investigation by the State Personnel Board (appointed by Palin), which Palin initiated to counteract the legislative probe, arguing that only the Board could conduct a "fair and impartial" investigation (someone's been watching too much Faux News). The Board hired an outside trial attorney to conduct the investigation, and the attorney was later discovered by the McCain campaign do be a democrat who had supported Palin's opponent in the gubernatorial election. Oops.
Here's the good part - the Troopergate report found a violation of the State's ethics laws, but the legislative counsel does not have the authority to sanction her for a violation of state law. Guess who does have such authority - the State Personnel Board!
The Board probably won't report its finding until after the election, but after the November landslide, when America says "thanks but no thanks" to the Hockey Mom, she will have to face the music. Without the "October surprise" element as cover, there is no way the "fair and impartial" State Personnel Board can avoid sanctioning her for the ethics violaton the investigative attorney is sure to find based on the Troopergate report. In just a few short months she will go from VP candidate to hockey mom, which will bring to an end one of the saddest footnotes in American political history. You betcha!
alright McCain.. you can make baseless attacks on my candidate of choice, but now you're starting to attack my place of work. that is over the line, its personal now "my friend".
The compensation committee has taken note that you're not here today............
should i put in my cover letter to sidley that i know bill ayers? will this help me get an interview?
-nervous T-10 1L
Columbus Day a holiday for attorneys. Only if you work for the govenment.
Seriously, is there another quality legal blog out there (like what ATL used to be) that I can frequent? This place clearly jumped the shark. Bailing on a minor (and working) 'holiday' is just one fo the final nails in the coffin. This blog has truly become third-tier. So where are the decent lawblogs?
http://endofesq.com/?p=305
rumor has it that in atlanta (so go ahead and tune out/make fun of the south, you f'n yankees), that hunton and smith gambrell laid off some folks on friday. any truth to what i'm hearing?
Mystal is going to gobble gobble gobble up some turkey.
yay for legal fraternity lothario!
This will be a first since MysTTTal took over-an entire weekday without an error filled post.
Elie went North to find more donuts.
there's an article over on AmLaw stating that Simpson got the bailout bill business from the treasury. The treasury asked six firms to compete, 2 made proposals, and Simpson's was selected. AmLaw didn't publish the names of the other firms.
Back in the day, when this blog was worth a shit, Lat would have had those names by breakfastime.
wtf - dealbreaker is still publishing. not that i wouldn't take the day off if it were given to me...
42 - Oh so right.
A holiday??? What the hell?!?!?! It's bad enough he doesn't update the material on the weekend.
Guys, don't make fun of Elie for his weight. It's not his fault that he's pregnanTTT
35: ATL has always taken holidays, both real and imagined. I don't think taking Columbus Day off can be construed as a new development, though it is, as it always has been, ripe for mockery.
"[The Arawaks] would make fine servants . . . . With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want." -Christopher Columbus
Kash, how much longer until you're ready to publish those bikini pics?
Elie to 190 (kilograms)!!!
jk Elie, I think you're doing a good job for the most part.
Very interesting information on how there will be no more posts today, but I'm still curious about recent no-offers from WILDMAN HARROLD. please advise.
49 - A good job of eating TTTurkey?
18 is awesome!
COLUMBUS school of law closed.
who cares?
Elly has no health insurance.
There's talk on TheLawyer.com of Cadwalader merging with A&O. Both firms deny the rumors.
Meanwhile, we still only have the name of one other firm--Davis Polk--that was considered for the bailout bill.
Um, this blog sucks.
This is absurd... there is so much to write about today
-Troopergate (more than just posting a link)
-Simpson getting tapped by the Fed to do the bailout.
Both the WSJ Law Blog and Tax Prof Blog are still posting.
Fuck Columbus - It's Indigenous People's Day.
Who the hell celebrates the start of colonialism and genocide in the Western Hemisphere. Stupid Italian thought he was in Southeast Asia. He didn't discover shit.
Arawak Times reports:
"New World not New, Columbus Duped."
OMG, even the Arawak Times is open today! Elie, you suck.
Elie must be on a food trip.
I like the "Indigenous People's Day" idea. Can we celebrate by spending the day in the woods instead of our stale offices?
I have school today. Columbus day is widely unrecognized by everyone as an absurd holiday that nobody cares about.
Whatever. It is, in fact, a holiday. While I am missing my ATL fix today because I happen to be in the office (with limited air conditioning) I feel it is unreasonable to expect (or hope) that working conditions at ATL are similarly inhumane. Happy Columbus Day ATL.
Simpson tapped as lead for the U.S. gov's 700 billion restructuring..........nice.
Wait... what just happened to the latest post about the "Obama Panic"?
57- if it weren't for colonialism everyone in the us would still be shitting outside
@65: Bess accidentally posted it over here. Read it at Dealbreaker. They're open today.
wtf is with canada having a turkey day? since when did they have pilgrims?
Ellie,
In addition to an apologize for taking the day off, I expect posts on the following tomorrow so we can discuss them:
1. Simpson getting the $700B bail out (who else applied what were the conflicts)
2. Trooper gate
3. Open thread on the Brian Leiter's ranking law schools' placement at elite firms
4. Open thread on how ATL has gone down hill
68: canadian thanksgiving is to give thanks for the harvest. it has nothing to do with pilgrims.
69-
Here is a thread idea that Elie should like and all Americans should know. I am certainly seeing more of it as we get closer to election day.
5. Open thread on why John McCain is a punk-azz b*tch.
Hannity reading off his paper (can't you memorize the attack yet Sean) is one thing in talking about Ayers, Wright, Satan, et al. that Obama is supposed to go out drinking with daily, but after saying you are honorable and don't want to attack wives, the I have always "Put the BS First" (recently) campaign is getting ridiculous.
I mean, I like to watch Fox News and LOL at the opinions and I also am conservative in some principles and don't want my new money taken by the Big O's Big G, but talk about that, not a possible link at a law firm. Hell, Kathleen Cleaver, wife of BPP founder Eldridge Cleaver worked at the all powerful Cravath who have people from Wachtell. So if you think Cravath and Wachtell are super primo, they are really the devil under this minor associations link BS by soon to still be a SENATOR McCAIN.
The campaign staff writing this crap might just be the same Bush staff linkage crap that said Iraq still had WMDs.
70: Without pilgrims, how do they have a Thanksgiving pagent in Canukistan?
70 - they shouldn't call it thanksgiving then...
I'm going to use this day off to go work out my David Lats at the gym
Oh boy, 71, what an incomprehensible load of crap. Lemme guess, you're a nervous TTT 1L, right? Thanks for that, it actually made me miss Elie.
Wasn't Columbus jewish?
Nervous T-10 1L = Fat Mystttal.
In the drug trade, who has the most culpability, the drug seller, the buyer or the delivery boy? Obviously the drug seller has the most blame.
So how come we always blamed the deliverers for the slave trade? Shouldn't the greatest culpability be placed on the slave sellers, i.e., the black Africans who captured and sold other blacks into perpetual slavery in the first place?
Oh I forget, it's because blacks can't be racist and can do no wrong. Kill whitey.
Is Simpson Goldman's law firm? Please advise.
34: government attorney at work today. business as usual. maybe we're bailing some of your clients out.
26: No - Jackie Chiles!
Wow. Actually missing Elie's posts today. Don't think that "Columbus Day" is a particular cause for celebration, but could do with a holiday nonetheless.
FROM WSJ:
"Earlier Monday, Interim Assistant Secretary for Financial Stability Neel Kashkari said the Treasury tapped law firm Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP to provide advice on taking equity stakes in banks."
How about providing us with the inside scoop to Simpson's dealing with the Treasury?
Which law firms are providing legal advice to which governments on the credit crisis?
18 sux and is a poor imitation of the Frat Lothario. Give it up, chump.
78 - Of course there is a lot of blame to go around, but tbh you show rather poor logic (i.e. TTT) in your use of the drug trafficing model. In the drug trade, you're right that the cartel bosses are clearly the ones with the most culpability, followed down the line until you reach the common street dealers, the drug farmers and the drug users. But in the slave trade comparison, the africans who catch other slaves are not the cartel bosses... they're the drug farmers. The cartel bosses are the fat cat Europeans (i.e. Whitey) who are pulling all the strings.
This site has officially jumped the GULC.
For some reason I decided to show up to Civ Pro today but I am posting here instead of paying attention.
-Slacker T-10 1L
For the next two years law firms will only be hiring from T9 schools or higher. Sorry UVA.
http://blogs.wsj.com/law/2008/10/11/a-conversation-with-elizabeth-wurtzel-author-and-first-year-lawyer/?mod=googlenews_wsj
Oooh, do a story on 89!
snap - just sayin!
Trig Palin -- Just sayin!
Um, 88, UVa is 9th. Sorry you're bitter that we have such a good time here. Go back to hiding in the library.
all around the kitchen cock-a-doodle-doodle-doo all around the kitchen cock-a- doodle-doodle-doo all around the kitchen cock-a-doodle-doodle-doo ...
Um 90: Why? ATL was too busy taking the day off.
Wrong -- UVA fell to 19th on the Cooley list.
suck it, Marty Madras.
66 Outside is prefereable to shitting on our economy. Send em back to Europe.
Good banner ad reminding me of the season premier of Samantha Who. Check it out tonight on ABC at 9:30. Nothing else of value, really.
Kashkari - the Adminsitration has no sense of irony.
84 -
You are a fool. This is an excellent Fraternity Lothario post. Please resume doc review.
http://blogs.wsj.com/law/2008/10/11/a-conversation-with-elizabeth-wurtzel-author-and-first-year-lawyer/?mod=googlenews_wsj
Is she hot? Like Sarah Palin hot?
Elie MysTTTal. Never Forget.
72/73 - it's called thanksgiving b/c you're "giving thanks" for the harvest.... and we don't do pageants - sTTTupid americans.
What do they harvest in Canada? Ice?
That's probably why there are not pageants. A show about harvesting ice is very boring, especially with no Pilgrims to jazz it up.
These events were not viewed as particularly consequential, other than by certain members of the trolletariat.
__________________________________________
And that sums it up.
104 - They harvest money, internet money, by going on strike and demanding it from world leaders. Enjoy the bounty of gumballs and Bennigans coupons you idiots at the World Canadian Bureau (the "WGA").
GULC is chock full of dem Canadians. That makes so much sense one you think about it.
http://www.newyorker.com/humor/polls/slansky2008campaignquiz/01013sh_shouts_slansky
103: Do you at least get to sit around on the couch all day watching Canadian fooTTTball?
Great Day - Dow up 11%, maybe you should give MysTTTal the rest of the year off.
The DOW! . . . the DOW!
This is for all you ____ who pulled your money out over the weekend.
85, ok let's say that we accept your analogy, and assume that so-called whiteys were the ones secretly running the slave markets in Zanzibar and Senegal (they weren't). We still blame the drug farmers in Colombia and Afghanistan for perpetuating the drug problem. Why do we never blame the African slave catchers? Better yet, how come we never blame the Arab slave traders (equally culpable as the drug cartel) but only the white traders?
103 - and they call it thanksgiving why? call it the fall harvest or something, everyone knows canada wants to be america, now they are copying our holidays.
everyone knows america is full of selfloathers. democrats loathe racists/republicans. republicans loathe the poor/brown. and the rest of the world loathes U.S.
thank god we're country boys.
Living in Canada is like living alone in a drafty, one-room apartment upstairs from the world's sweetest party. Most Canadians live within 100 miles of the border - their equivalent of putting their ears to the floor to listen to all the fun they're missing. Financial meltdown or not, at least we still have summers.
Five probes? One probe, two probes, three probes, four probes, five probes. Five probes. Ah ah ah.
The guy on this week's DateLab (WaPo) is a GULC law student. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/10/03/AR2008100302154.html
I'm sure that if Obama or Biden had ever had any executive experience in their lives, the would have abused it.
The most culpable element of the drug trade is the government, which makes these drugs illegal and causes all of the criminality that goes with it. Cocaine should be available at the corner store like cigarettes, beer, and Starbucks.
Canada has the best muscians in the world (The Weakerthans) and I'm thankful for that.
Praise Canada!
Re: David Lat,
http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com/archives/2008/09/david_lats_exhillaryites_for_p.php
Whatever happened to that group he formed for former hillary supports who are now supporting McCain because of Palin.
When I heard, I was like, oh damn, I didn't know David Lat was a gay.
And Lat's real smart too, right? Yale Law, Circuit Clerkship.
I wonder what he thinks about those Couric interviews.
Tucker Bounds is a massive tool.
Now I'm gonna go talk to a goat.
Hey goat, I like your beard, I had a beard just like that in A Perfect Storm.
Hey 121, Lat knows his stuff. If he says Palin's good to go then she's got my vote. Her and her running-mate, Mc-something. . . .
Balls.

If Lat had any self-respect he'd shutter this darkening corner of the inter-blags. 3 days without any meaningful posting during while the securities laws and markets change like the lunch special at a diner.
Like Sammy Jackson said to Robert Dinerio in "Jackie Brown" (after shooting him) "what the fuck happened to you man? you used to be beautiful."

Oh jeebus.... From that piece on Elizabeth Wurtzel (when asked what her "law-school thesis" was about, whatever the fuck that is):
"It’s about how the Constitution created Hollywood, about creativity and the Constitution. To me, it’s just sort of mind-boggling that the framers put provisions in the Constitution that had to do with intellectual property. At the time, our country was a pretty rugged place, but it seems they had a hope of making the country a place in which creativity and invention could really flourish. So that’s what it’s about, and that’s what on my mind at the moment on the writing front. "
She has no damn clue what she's talking about. She clearly has scant knowledge of the founding of the United States and, more importantly, the history of IP. Baby, intellectual property has been protected by law since the 1400s. This was not a new idea.
132: many law schools have writing requirements. As Frat Stud would say, "it was not a big deal." Though I agree that the quotation verges on the unintelligible.
ATL to actual content on Tuesday? [I can haz content, plz?]
10/14 and same post is up
It's 9:10 am on October 14. No new content is up. You're making me pay attention to work, rather than the newest judicial embarrassment. LAT would never do such a thing. Get your ass out of bed and post a distraction. Shame on you.
