Nationwide Layoff Watch: Jenner & Block Cuts … Partners

Jenner Block LLP logo Abovethelaw Above the Law legal tabloid.JPGThe hits to the Chicago market keep on coming. In the wake of Katten Muchin Rosenman laying off 21 attorneys, and Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal cutting 25 attorneys and additional staff, Jenner & Block is getting rid of 10 partners:

The Chicago-based firm is asking about 10 partners, both equity and non-equity, to exit with the bulk of those affected currently working out of the firm’s biggest office in Chicago, the sources said. No particular practice area is more affected than others. The departures equate to about 6 percent of Jenner’s 155 equity partner headcount and 2 percent of the overall 490 lawyer headcount. The firm declined comment.

Remember that happy-happy-joy-joy meeting Jenner held earlier this month? According to a tipster, Jenner associates were told:

not to worry about the issues on wall st- they will not adversely affect Jenner’s bottom line. Jenner is having a great year and bonus are expected to be as good or better than last year.

Well how does that statement jibe with cutting 10 partners? As one commenter put it:

A rich man doesn’t need to tell you that he’s rich.

The flip side below the fold.

Maybe the reason Jenner told associates to be positive in early October was that they planned to to part ways with under performing partners all along. According to the National Law Journal, Jenner is looking to increase efficiency across the board:

“In this economy, all well-managed law firms, including Jenner & Block, must assess operations, staffing and expenses on a continuing basis and Jenner & Block is making selected staffing changes to better align our expertise and services with the current and anticipated client needs, just as we have in the past few years,” managing partner Susan Levy said in a statement issued by the firm. “In this economy, we have to be particularly vigilant and are taking a hard look at every area of expense.”

Why should associates pay when partners can’t make it rain?

Nonetheless, losing partners usually does not increase associate job security. Chicago might be taking the hits right now, but I can’t imagine Washington or New York associates feel any better this morning.

Update: Check here for additional Jenner information.

It seems more like Jenner is using the economy as an excuse to trim some fat and get rid of partners who aren't bringing enough dough. 10 partners at Jenner isn't as bif of a deal as 21 associates at Katten or 25 at Sonnenschein. I'm sure Kirkland will trim some fat, too - since everyone else is doing it.

Elie is an idiot anyway and much of this is misleading. For instance, Katten only cut 8 lawyers in Chi, 21 nationwide. Don't try and create a panic because you are too lazy to do your research.

I don't understand why it's news that such a big law firm is getting rid of 10 partners. Regardless of the economy, shouldn't every organization shed it's baggage and under-performing employees every now and then? Laying off ten partners once a year seems normal, not newsworthy.

Does anyone know the actual process for laying off associates and partners?

I assume that in most places the department heads (or a committee of such) have the ability to get rid of associates. But do the shareholders have to vote to get rid of partners?

33, it all depends on the partnership agreement. Which you won't see until AFTER you agree to become a partner... assuming you are asked.

avatar
37 Posted by guest | Permalink Tuesday, October 21, 2008 11:10 AM

33: it does depend, but there is a distinction between a "partner" and an "employee" (though perhaps blurred in the case of non-equity partners). The more important thing is the connotation. Throwing your own partners on the street is pretty cannibalistic, barbaric, or whatever you want to call it.

avatar
38 Posted by guest | Permalink Tuesday, October 21, 2008 11:11 AM

A good business plan by JB---just because you are a partner does not mean you have a life long job. They are not cutting associates (yet) just partners. Why the fuss? Many businesses cut the bottom 10% of their management ranks every year. Helps make room for the up and comers.

just got out of a meeting with a senior partner on the associates' committee of a top 10 firm -- bonuses are not looking good at all this year -- even though the firm is having a good year, the partners see this economy as an opportunity to stop the bonus "madness" and stop trying to tie big firms to i-banks. not good.

avatar
44 Posted by guest | Permalink Tuesday, October 21, 2008 11:16 AM

37, what makes you say that? Billing 400 hours and doing 1200 hours of business development was once, not so long ago, at least tacitly accepted. Firms simply cannot afford to have partners that do that anymore, and those that refuse to change should be axed.

23: two things. One, our economy in Dallas is doing better than most around the country, so that provides a little more stability. Two, we don't get paid "200k" down here -- although the Texas firms follow the 160K for first years, the bonuses are very small and the lockstep salary increases are incremental.

After lamenting my choice of city for years, I'm very happy that I work in Dallas, and, more importantly, that our housing prices are not decreasing.

I hope those in NY are having fun with what will be their lower bonuses, soon to be higher taxes, cesspool homelessness, 500 sq ft crap-hole in brooklyn or jersey, and 2300 hours/year -- all so you can go to times square or get a drink at some obscure pseudo-intellectual coffee house or weird restaurant that everyone is afraid to admit that they don't like.

You are a backwoods retard. The exact same things were said by associates in Charlotte not long ago, and many of them now feel like they just got a prostate exam with a beach umbrella. NY will endure.

I just moved to the Dallas area 4 months ago from the Detroit area (where we rented). I've lived in Chicago, Phoenix and Western Michigan.

The Dallas area is great. Tons of things to do (on par with Chicago in general). Low house prices. No state income tax. Good weather. Good economy and jobs. Lots of museums, music, shopping, restaurants, whatever. Football, unfortunately, now on par with Chicago (although we go to a bar with about 25 other transplants and watch Bears games). And not many native Texans.

It's an undiscovered gem. And the Dallas area housing prices have increased in the last four or five months.

I am enjoying all the hate for Texas on here. I'm a born and bred Northeasterner (raised in the suburbs on Long Island and NJ), went to college and law school in NYC and couldn't be happier to be in a place where the cost of living is cheap and people aren't so rude. Took a little getting used to, for sure, but there is no way in hell I'd ever go back. But trust me, YOU wouldn't like it. Stay there.

Love y'all,

Houston isn't bad (hot and humid, though). San Antonio is supposed to be great. Pittsburgh is alot better than you'd think (but tough to get jobs).

Your local library should have a book on the 300 or 500 Best Places to Live in the US. It ranks metro areas in categories like cost of living, climate, things to do, crime, economy and job growth, health care availability, etc. You can decide what's important to you and do your rankings.

That's how I found out about Texas and a few other places.

I sincerely hope that you are not exercising those stupendous reading skills in your pursuit of the billable hour. Otherwise you would open yourself to a legal malpractice suit.

But, hey, if you're making $190K, who cares what the clients think?

I assure you -- your partners will.

Shouldn't Jenner be doing better than many peer firms? With their focus on litigation, one would expect Jenner to be less affected than firms which are more reliant on finance/real estate work.

Dallas is a best-kept secret. Get to live in a 3,300 sq ft house w/ a yard as a 3rd year, pay no state income taxes, great restaurants, one of the largest number of billionaires per capita (so there's good shopping and classy stuff going on), etc.

Dallas Opera sucks given the size of the market/population. Houston has a first rate company by comparison. If Dallas even has a symphony no one outside northern Texas has heard of it.

In other words Dallas may not be a complete cultural wasteland, but trying to put in in the same league as New York is ridiculous - it doesn't even match Houston
