No Leaks Coming From The NY Board Of Law Examiners

jacob javits convention center ny bar exam.jpgHere at ATL we like to start rumors, fan their beautiful flames, and hope to God that the winds do not change and burn the house down. Being a wet blanket is no fun.

But unfortunately we received one tip that was just too good to be true:

There's a rumor going around that some NY scores have been leaked. I've seen it on a few message boards and my father (???) called me and almost lead me to crap my pants when he told me one of his ... friends just found out she passed the NY bar.

I think it's a load of crap, but maybe something worth noting?

We hoped that some students had been told they had passed, while others were left with the terrifying noise of silence. But a quick call to the New York Board of Law Examiners revealed that the rumor was untrue.

(Side note: When you call the NY Board of Law Examiners they put you on hold and play a little song. Ours was "I just called to say I love you" by Stevie Wonder. Has anybody ever called BOLE and said "I just wanted to thank you for administering that awesome bar exam. I thought it was a fair and accurate representation of everything a practicing attorney needs to know. I passed easily. I just wanted to say thanks."

No, right? That has never happened. So why play that particular song to people who are most likely on the verge of tears and calling to bitch about something? Do they think they're "funny?" The only song you should hear when calling BOLE is "Three Little Birds" by Bob Marley.)

Anyway, BOLE press person John McAlary had a good laugh when we asked him if NY bar exam scores had been leaked early. Once we convinced him that we were not "nervous T-10 1L" he assured us that no scores have been leaked because none are available:

We are still in the process of processing and grading the exams. If anyone says that they have their scores, they are lying. ... I couldn't even tell you today if any of the 11,000 exam takers passed ... the results simply are not finished yet.

McAlary said that NY scores would be ready in November, just as they always have.

So don't listen to the lies exam takers. No New York scores are available yet. But you don't have to wait much longer. Just hope and pray New York doesn't use some bastardized version of "iBaby." We assume you'll want to actually be able to see your scores once they are released.

While working internal tech support in Dilbert-land, I successfully lobbied to have our hold music changed to "My Favorite Things".

That same year, we witnessed the birth of a new phenomenon: franchisee suicides.

How can I prepare the best to pass the Bar? What exactly is the Bar, is it a class?

Are you people completely retarded? The University of Pennsylvania is an Ivy League school, consistently ranked with Harvard, Yale, and Princeton in the top 5 or 10 (for undergrad) and has top 10 law and medical schools and the #1 business school. Penn State is an average state school that is not located in Philadelphia.

Also, I've never done coke before, should I practice doing it now? I don't want to be "that SA" that was at a firm party and didn't know what to do with the blow offered by the partner.

8, they usually come out the week before Thanksgiving although Thanksgiving seems later than usual this year.

I remember Bar/Bri gave us a few days head's up on NY scores so check with them the first week of November. (Remember, some of the Bar/Bri teachers are also BOLE graders...)

Apparently some PA scores were actually leaked last week....allegedly you could log on to see if your application was complete and the status had been changed from complete to passed. That was before the PA Bar examiners caught on and took it down.

18, I heard from the sampling that Penn state's pass rate wasn't too good. Hardly befitting a top-10 school.

Ahhh, the neuroses that crop up when waiting for bar exam results! I remember how, a few weeks or so before the bar results were released, I started receiving flyers advertising PMBR's study materials. Of course I freaked out, thinking that the state bar had sold the no pass list to PMBR (and that PMBR had gotten an early start hawking their wares). I passed, and can therefore laugh at myself now, but the anxiety of waiting for bar exam results is excrutiating.

NY bar results will most likely be released nov 18 or 20, based on prior years' results.

not that this will stop 10k neurotic recent grads from going to the BOLE website every day from now on...

UPenn State is a top ten law school because of its great value (in-state tuition) and the great facilities and resources it has (it's largely funded by proceeds from the big football games).

New York results may not have leaked, but Minnesota results were available online today. How about a Minnesota post? Everyone cares about Minnesota. And how about those Vikings? Had a game handed to them last night.

Even though WILDMAN HARROLD doesn't have an office in New York, WILDMAN HARROLD'S associates would have no problems passing the New York bar.

I'm glad you didn't get a rumor about Virginia and attempt to call them and confirm. You would have single-handedly delayed results for another 2 weeks according to them.

A local bar should have access to the internet and to booze on the day the results come out.

Not that I'm worried or anything (perish the thought!), but what's the usual practice at V25 firms in NY if you fail the Bar? Do you usually get a second shot in February, or do they frog march you out the door with a "Kick Me" sign taped to your back? If the usual rule is that you get a second chance, do y'all think that courtesy will be observed in the current market?

19: "In 1974, both San Francisco-based "Bay Area Review" (BAR) and Chicago-based "Bar Review Institute" (BRI) were bought by publishing giant Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich, and promptly merged." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BarBri

Oddly enough, the wait for the results is getting harder as the time gets closer; when there were 3 months to go, it was easier to dismiss it all as " far down the road." Now, each day seems to crawl by as we move into November. What's worse is that some of my friends in other states have already gotten their results and are eagerly heading into the admissions process...

BTW, I recently had a lawyer friend tell me that he was able to get information about his score almost a month before the results were formally distributed. This was back in 2003-2004 sometime. While things may or may not be the same over at BOLE in 2008, they've got to have SOME information over there at this point. I'd settle for a raw MBE score...?!
