Virginia Bar Exam: Everybody Be Cool

virginia bar exam results.JPGThe results of the July 2008 Virginia Bar Exam were supposed to be posted today. And when the site went dead today it looked like the results would be coming soon.

But that was at noon. And now everybody is freaking out.

But we've been through this before with the Illinois results. Everybody just needs to chill, wait it out, and threaten bodily harm to the Virginia Board of Bar Examiners in the comments.

Things will get sorted, soon. But you can commiserate below. Be aware that the VBBE is no longer taking phone calls.

Whenever they fix this thing, you should be able to see results here.

Isn't the swearing-in ceremony on October 27 at the Richmond Convention Center? And what kind of a ceremony can it be if all 800 or 1000 or how ever many are sworn in en masse? Sounds like a Unification church mass wedding.

I call bluff on #7 and #8. All of us that took that bar know it's a commonwealth, not a state.

I similarly call BS on 7 & 8 - they've made it abundantly clear that they'll string you up if you so much as think about calling them to ask.

Also - Elie, VA gave us all a letter saying results were coming on the 17th, where are you hearing that "The results of the July 2008 Virginia Bar Exam were supposed to be posted today"?

I echo 12. Though the website has said "mid-October" for some time - the date we were given in Roanoke was the 17th. Where's it coming from that today is the release date?

avatar
30 Posted by guest | Permalink Wednesday, October 15, 2008 8:18 PM

I believe the unprecendated failure rate stuff. The VBBE is great at professional hazing. You know, Virginia is always jealous. If they think that some other state has a higher faliure rate, they'll re-score.

31 Posted by guest | Permalink Wednesday, October 15, 2008 8:24 PM

Yes 29, you have to wear "clothing that is fit for a court of record" But, if you take the exam in the summer, you have to also wear athletic shoes, as hard shoes make to much noise at the Roanoke Colisium's hard floors (of course the shoes squeaked.) When I was studying for the exam, the BarBri rep liked to tell a story of a woman who wore a mumu and was told that she could not sit for the exam.

25, Virginia is still strict liability. None of that namby-pamby decidin' whose more at fault here. There's also a really low cap on punitives, so none of that "my coffee was too hot" bs either. Think about it, ever hear of a big jury award out of Virginia? and none of that "Your Honor, there is a ninth circuit case directly on point" whining either. There are no other circuits other than the 4th, and we ain't so sure about them anymore. What was that? You wanted to marry your other race significant other? Well, I guess we have to let you do that now, but they's better be of the opposite sex.

Virginia is simply full of contradictions. One the one hand, it took the US Supreme Court to tell Virginia that they had to let people of different races marry, but Virginia was the first state to elect a black governor. On the one hand, there was a huge out cry over the placement of a statue of Abraham Lincoln in Richmond a few years ago, and on the other, the fair Commonwealth is leaning toward Obama. And don't get me started on immigrants...

While the letter said the 17th, it's pretty routine for VBBE to post earlier than the date they say (like, the Wednesday before) just to psych the bar takers out. Elie's right--it should have been posted today. But due to some admin crap it won't be up till tomorrow morning. I wish they were like NY and just gave us a date and time to check.

31 -- outdated information since the floors at the Roanoake Coliseum were concrete, not hardwood. The basketball floorboards were removed. So, no squeaking shoes this summer. However, I don't know what kind of floors were in the laptop room.

12 -- the letter they gave out this summer to me at the exam did not have the October 17 date; it only mentioned the October 27 date. But, maybe the proctors forgot to give everyone a second document with the October 17 date.

No, the statue was of Lincoln. See: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9C02E1DD1238F935A35757C0A9659C8B63

The Ashe statue came about ten years earlier to some minor controversy. Any grumbling today is due to the fact that Ashe looks like he's about to beat down kids with his tennis racket and book while they drown in quicksand.

The results were released on a Wednesday in 2006 and a Friday in 2007. I'm not sure who started this Wednesday rumor, but in Roanoke, they told us October 17, which is tomorrow. So while I'm refreshing the page at regular intervals today, I'm not expecting anything until tomorrow.

I've heard lots of anecdotal 'data' regarding release times. Clearly, there's either no pattern whatsoever, or no one knows what they're talking about.

I have no idea where Albermarle County is...so, I think you are safe.

UVA '08 - reveal yourself. Some other UVA 08'ers out here are curious....

I went to UVA, and people like UVA 08 give the school a bad reputation. Let me guess, you also wore a bow tie to the Bar Exam?

Seriously, there's no need for such arrogance. We are all in the same boat, regardless of where we went to school. There will be UVa grads who fail the Bar, just as there will be folks from lesser-known schools who pass.

And even if you do pass, you'll probably be taking orders from an "inferior school"--at least for your first few years in practice.

In sum, lighten up.

Well said, 114. I am also a fellow UVA 08er.

Ditto on 115....except...I like the bow tie.

Ok, the bow-tie doesn't bother me so much.

Sorry I don't know about Albermarle County...I guess that makes me unqualified for the esteemed VA Bar. I'm from MI, I passed the MI Bar last year, but my gf is licensed in VA (also doesn't know where Albermarle County is), so I had to take VA. So there's my sad story and thats why I am on here waiting, oh waiting...and talking with y'all, to find out how I did.

If you're curious-- the VA Bar is more difficult than MI, because there, all you need to do is get a 150 MBE and you automatically pass no matter what your essays look like. Or, it has been that way and they are now changing it. But it was for me in any case.

113. Can you imagine the ridicule i'd be subject too. I'd have to get a restraining order against the guy from Stanford-Regent. I don't want some passive aggressive, badly dressed dude wearing a diaper who smells like curly fries showing up in Richmond with duct tape, scissors and a love note trying to abduct me.

Do you guys remember what it was like waiting in line to pull off a "number 2" before the exam? If I don't have to take the bar exam again, I'll always cherish that memory. And if I do have to take it again, well then I'll be having fits of nostalgia waiting in that line again in February. And maybe even again next July too!

99- What are you doing with your UVa JD in Cville still? Isn't it a little late to still be hanging out? Still looking for a job? Or are you doing that whole trust fund noble public service routine? Hope that pompous attitude is treating you well...

#113 - Richmond, eh....If we just cross-reference our list of where recent grads are practicing, we can figure you out (and Mr. Curly Fries will never have a clue!).....I mean, its not like I'm doing any work right now anyhow. Damn VBBE!

And if you are who I think you are....then you actually DID wear a bow tie to the exam.

Signed - UVA 08 grad that spent 2 years annoying everyone with a wheeling backback. (yes yes -pathetic, I know.)

126. I am not making anyone look bad. You can probably handle that with ease without anyone knowing where you went to school. Face it: we are smarter than most and have better pedigrees now. Quit being modest.

Has this post really been reduced to a comment pool of individuals talking about why each person is more arrogant than the next and the relative goods and evils of the bow tie?

One more non-UVA 08 grad (WVU 08 here) who did get accepted to UVA via transfer and wishes he would have ignored the heightened monetary expense and followed through on the transfer (but not because I really think it would have increased my chances at passing this bar)

I would love to know how many billable hours Virginia associates are wasting just by going back and forth between this page and the results page, mindlessly clicking refresh like those crack-addicted rats in drug experiments . . .

The sheer thought of it amazes me.

As a graduate of the venerable Wayne State University Law School in Detroit, MI, after undergrad at Michigan, I can say with absolutely no irony, and all sincerity, that I would be bragging and proud if I went to UVA as well. Lay off UVA '08.

I agree with 131, UVA '08, what a pain you are. And dont sit there so smug in your chair either - it's not like UVA had the highest pass rate in VA last year. I hope you passed, because I wouldn't wish failing on anyone, but I can tell you right now your attitude won't get you far. Oh and you didn't gain any extra points with the bow tie.
