Cadwalader Charlotte Capital Swag

Back in the Halcyon days of 2007, when banks existed and Charlotte was a “secondary market,” Cadwalader was having public picnics (instead of executions). Below is an example of the swag they offered:

Cadwalader swag front.JPG

Oh yes, Capital Markets did have a field day. Now Cadwalader says this about its Capital Markets practice:

The difficult economic environment and the severe dislocations in markets worldwide present unique opportunities, challenges and issues regarding fixed income securities, structured finance, synthetic, and hybrid products, whole loans, and derivatives. Now, more than ever, financial market participants need legal advisors with the knowledge and expertise to navigate the complex array of contractual rights, financial structures, and bankruptcy and regulatory issues associated with such financial instruments.

Well that’s a positive spin on a field of legal work that no longer exists. But hey, they’re Cadwalader. And you know what the firm motto was (from the other side of the T-shirt):

Cadwalader swag back.JPG

Cadwalader is a firm you can count on from the cradle to the grave (disclaimer: time and placement of the grave may not be of your own choosing). Our tipster reports:

This is a t-shirt (front & back) from Cadwalader (Charlotte)ʼs 2007 Capital Markets summer picnic. It is a size 3 toddler which makes it even more hysterical/ironic/classic.

There’s got to be more stuff like this floating around out there. Please send us your “ironic” firm swag to tips@abovethelaw.com.

Elie,

Time AND placement of your proofreading skills not your choice either?

what's a capital market?

and while we're at it, what's an i-banker? is it some sort of retina scan program that banks secure their system with?

Nice try at avoiding trademark infringement on the Olympic logo, CWT. I don't think that cuts it.

I used a Cadwalader umbrella walking home from the office last night (I work for a big law firm that doesnt lay everyone off).

I also use a Cadwalader water bottle that says "Real Cool" on it. If getting bed bugs is Real Cool, consider me Miles Davis.

Using the 7 olympic rings is a definite no-no under federal law.

Anybody else see trademark and copyright infringement on that t-shirt?

A law firm should know better.

#17 - the olympic logo only has 5 rings....The five rings represent the five major regions of the world: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. Every national flag in the world includes at least one of the five colors, which are (from left to right) blue, yellow, black, green, and red.

I also use the CWT umbrella as my "backup" (keep it in my car) and have their water bottle, but it is a little small.

20-- True enough, but you don't have to duplicate exactly to infringe. It just has to be close enough for people to get the idea.

avatar
23 Posted by guest | Permalink Tuesday, November 25, 2008 11:49 AM

The rings also stand for passion, faith, victory, work ethic, and sportsmanship. Ironically, a Frenchie came up with that...

avatar
24 Posted by guest | Permalink Tuesday, November 25, 2008 11:50 AM

the 7 olympic rings represent the 7 lawyers left at CWT Charlotte.

having worked at CWT CLT, I can say that the prior year's shirts were even better. the logo on that t-shirt read "our deals are bigger than yours". for those familiar with the partners in that office, that pretty much reflects the culture they had there - the egos were huge and like in all CWT offices, the associate morale was in the dumps. not unusual for 80% of an incoming class to be gone within 1 or 2 years at that particular CWT office.

This is why CLT is in the flusher. Arrogance, douchiness, and ridiculousness. Charlotte will forever be 2nd tier. People thought they could be tier-1 lawyers and have a suburban quality of life. Laughable.

technically, 31 was right since he/she was talking about copyright, not trademark. there is a difference...

copyrights do expire based upon publication dates and the death of the author. trademark is a different animal. Unlike copyrights, a trademark can be protected forever, as long as the trademark holder continues to use it as a trademark.

avatar
45 Posted by guest | Permalink Tuesday, November 25, 2008 4:10 PM

Hypertechnically, 36 U.S.C. 380 creates a cause of action that sounds neither trademark or copyright. It applies to the olympic rings for all time, and is free from the technicalities of copyright or trademark

Quite amusing. I actually laughed out loud at "Cadwalader is a firm you can count on from the cradle to the grave (disclaimer: time and placement of the grave may not be of your own choosing). "

I've criticized other posts recently, so it seemed only fair to praise this one.

Kudos to posters noting trademark issues (bonus kudos to #45!). Methinks if any business other than a big law firm used a multicolored rings logo like that, and it came to the attention of the U.S. Olympic Committee, they'd probably be sued or at least get a harsh warning or cease and desist letter (rightly or wrongly).
