Election Shenanigans Watch: All Hell is Breaking Loose in Virginia
In 2000 it was Florida, in 2004 it was Ohio. Could 2008 be the year that Virginia is the state that embarrasses democracy in America?
According to a conference call that is still ongoing with Election Protection (the nation’s largest nonpartisan voter protection coalition) right now voting in Virginia is in pretty bad shape.
There are reports of polling places opening late and long lines. That is pretty regular stuff.
But the Director for the national campaign for Lawyers for Fair Elections is saying that the real problems are occurring after the voting machines breakdown.
Virginia does not have a statewide mandate to have “back-up” paper ballots. However, voters who are able to vote using paper ballots are being told that those ballots are “provisional.”
According to election lawyers, this is wrong. If you are voting on a paper ballot because of a voting machine breakdown, that ballot should be counted as “regular.” Paper ballots should be counted as regular ballots even if you are voting on a form for “provisional” ballots.
But election officials are apparently telling voters that any paper vote is provisional. Lawyers are lobbying in Richmond right now to get the state the set their poll workers straight.

Virginia is also having a serious problems with students. Students are allowed to vote at or near their universities, but Virginia election officials are telling students that they cannot do so.
These Virginia breakdowns appear to be happening all across the state, suggesting that the issue is not partisan so much as it’s a situation of electoral incompetence.
Election protection plans to update the press at 3:30 p.m.
Right now lawyers are also asking Virginia to extend the time polls are open, but so far no decision has been made.
In one county in Virginia, some polling precincts are allowing people into the polls based on alphabetical order. So if your surname starts with a W, you’re waiting for 6 hours, but if your surname is “Apple” you can waltz right in. Shockingly, there is no state law that prevents this practice.
Another state having problems is Pennsylvania, according to the lawyers.
So … good job Florida so far. Way to (provisionally) learn from your mistakes.
Update (11:30): Apparently the Radford College registrar told students that if they registered to vote from the school post office boxes that their votes would not count (wrong). At Virginia Tech, students were told that if they registered from school and then attempted to vote there would be “dire consequences.” Both of these statements have been retracted.
Also, apparently the Blacksburg polling place closest to Virginia Tech is located some 6.5 miles away … in a church.

I just voted in Virginia. You have the option of either voting by machine or by paper. They actually ask, "Would you like to vote by machine or paper." This story just sounds wrong on its face. I'm glad you're not willing to jump the gun when it comes to law firm terminations, but in terms of voter fraud and the national election you're right on board.

voted in Arlington this morning- lovely 2 hour long line at 6:30 am. There were a total of 10 spots to vote. 4 paper ballot write in areas and 6 machines. Not exactly a good set up for a busy area.

Btw, it is "non-partisan" but they only really advertise and focus on heavily democratic areas, so that part of it is basically a joke.

Hey, 11, I too voted in Arlington early. In line at 6:40 and out the door by 7:40. And yeas, only 6 electronic machines and 4 paper ballot kiosks with hundreds of people in line. While I agree that the resources available were meager, people at my polling place kept things moving. Maybe your 2 hour wait was all in your impatient little mind.

8, you need to realize that voting machines and options vary BY COUNTY. Just because your county allows voting machines and paper ballots doesn't mean others do as well. I just voted in Albermarle County and only machine voting is available.
Also, at the University of Virginia, there are issue of poll officials improperly not allowing students to vote. I assume Election Protection will go into more details on the 3:30pm conference call.... I just saw a lot disappointed and angry students

I voted in McLean, Virginia, and starting at 5:45 am was part of a line that was present right when the doors opened at 6 am. I was done by 6:30 am. At that point, the line had thinned out so that my wife who voted later reported that she had a half hour wait.
4 electronic and two paper. They were practically begging people to use the paper ballots, but I think the majority were happy with electronic filing.

People vote in churches all over the country. Churches happen to be good places to have polling places because most churches are not crowded on Tuesdays and have parking lots to fit cars. People do not get religious just because they voted in a church.

Let's be clear: "Election Protection" is a radical leftist activist group which has as its partners the ACLU and LaRAZA (aka the Tan Klan).
I just voted in a rural precinct in Virginia. It was a very long line for that precinct. Absolutely no problems. I represent a local gov't in Virginia and it's not as if the registrars didn't know about this possible problem. The registrar and I had a conference about it in July. Each locality got to order paper ballots to "cover" for voters in case their machines broke down. The registrar and I agreed that it only made sense to have 80% of registered voters "covered" by having paper ballots available in case of a massive machine breakdown. Some urban areas only paid for about a 20% to 25% "coverage". If they have a massive breakdown (a la Chesterfield County in the primary), a lot of urban/suburban voters will not have their vote count b/c they will have no way to record it.

Here in the great American Deep South, the police are only allowing males to vote. Further restrictions on voting include, caucasion only, no homosexuals (at my polling place they kicked a guy out because he had an earring, he protested claiming that he had a wife and kids, but the cops wouldn't listen) . Also, you must show a deed or other legal proof of owning real estate. The final restriction is that one must sign a contract guaranteeing that one will vote republican only before being allowed into the polling center. Almost all polling places are also baptist churches, and inside the ministers are giving continous sermons on the devil barack obama and how the bible tells us blacks are an inferior people. We had a few crazy blacks try to protest another polling center a few blocks from my house but the enterprising police whistled up a fire engine and blew those folks off the road.

This post sounds wrong on its face because Elie wrote that voters in Virginia are being told that their paper ballot submissions are provisional. It doesn't say some voters, it doesn't say voters in some counties, it says Virginia voters. You can imply he means something else, but that is not what he wrote. So at my polling place, and most others on here, paper ballots are available as a primary voting resource regardless of how the machines are functioning.
None of this will matter, since Obama's going to win Virginia by 7-8 points anyway. And according to Drudge, some people's ballots are getting wet because they're dripping on them. Oh no!!

Voted in South Carolina this morning at a large A.M.E. church.. Nothing but whiteys in line. I'm willing to bet that was the most white people that have ever set foot on that property in its 100 year existence.

I voted just before 8 a.m. in Charlottesville, after a half-hour wait. I was given a choice of machine or paper voting and chose paper. I didn't see anyone being given any trouble or told their ballots were provisional. What is this about UVa students not being allowed to vote? Obviously, that would be a huge concern.
In the north suburbs of Chicago, I was asked whether I wanted electronic or paper, and I was also asked whether I wanted a blonde or burnette giving me a BJ while I voted. I thought it was a little weird, but I took the blonde because she had bigger lips. It was the best voting experience i've ever had.

I voted at 11:15 in Fairfax County suburbs. I was in and out within 3 minutes. Paper ballots only (although there were electronic machines at the primary).
Others who voted mid to late morning had very little wait. All the people who went before work could have seen this coming. And the people who vote after work will have the same problem. But, if you can't vote at any other time, I guess you just have to deal.
Wet or humid paper ballots matter because the paper swells, curls and jams up the machines.

Well, what are you supposed to do if you work in downtown DC but you live out in the suburbs? It's not exactly a possibility to leave in the middle of the day to go vote.

I hope you vote better than you post, 161-164! My DC law firm had a liberal leave policy today so people could vote. Hell, half the firm appears to be out doing election protection.
If you voted at 7 a.m., you had to know that you'd be waiting in an enormous line.
BTW, a commute that makes it difficult to vote during poll hours WAS one of the absentee ballot reasons in Virginia. That's the excuse everyone I knew used. And they waited longer to vote that I did.
