Predictions: Beat the ATL Editors

bush kerry ev map.JPGAs some of you might have heard, there is an election happening tomorrow; a Presidential one, so we’ve been told.

Ever since Bush v. Gore, elections have become a potential legal matter as much as anything. Tomorrow, we’ll be bringing you updates on the various electoral shenanigans as they happen. Check out some of the latest opportunities for post-election litigation at Rick Hasen’s Election Law Blog.

If it is close, we could end up in court for weeks. Georgetown University Law Center has already contemplated the disaster.

But, during this brief calm before the biggest gambling event of the fall, we offer you a little game: Beat the ATL Editors, Election Edition. Win the (anonymous) respect of your peers by out predicting the ATL brain trust.

There are polling numbers that indicate that as many as 11 states are “in play” heading into Tuesday: PA, VA, NC, FL, OH, IN, MO, ND, MT, CO, and NV.

Vegas has set the over-under at 325 Electoral Votes for Barack Obama.

Off of that line, I’m taking the under.

I’ve got Obama coming out of this with 324 EVs. Of the 11 in play, I see Obama picking up: PA, VA, FL, IN, and CO.

I’ll believe that the Bradley-effect doesn’t exist the minute it stops existing. Obama dropped ten points in a day in the New Hampshire primary. Why? Because Hillary cried and “found her voice?” Sure. “Call me” when Harold Ford Jr. wins that Senate race in Tennessee.

Kash and Lat weigh in after the jump.

Kash comes up with a sure-to-be-litigated 284 EVs for Obama:

Kash is not a lawyer, barely a journalist, and definitely not a political pundit. But here’s her completely unscientific prediction for the battleground states. She should mention that she is a believer in the Lisa Simpson brand of sports prediction, of choosing the team whose mascot could beat up the other team’s mascot.

Pennsylvania— John Kerry’s ordering Swiss cheese on his philly cheesesteak in ‘04 will likely sour Pennsylvanians on the Democrats (and lawyers) for many elections to come. PA goes to McCain.

Nevada— Strip club lawsuits and Judge Halverson’s hijinks have created a fascination with the legal world in Nevada. A lawyer candidate may reap the benefits of this. Nevada in Obama’s corner.

She sees Florida and Ohio staying in the McCain column, but thinks Obama will hold on in Virginia and Indiana.

David Lat comes out strong, taking the over at 338 Obama EVs. Lat’s map looks just like George Will’s. He gives PA, VA, FL, and OH all to Obama. He does thinks Obama is tilting at windmills in the land of Hoosiers though.

Anybody think McCain can actually pull this one out?

We’ll be keeping an eye out for dirty tricks tomorrow. In the meantime, regardless of political affiliation, don’t forget to vote.

Obama wins and we all lose. McCain wins and we all lose. The real question is the magnitude of loss with each candidate (sort of like what's worst a kick in the nuts or a kick in the pole). Boy, it sure is good to be us.

The call me ad was not racist. It was just stupid and it hurt Corker who was winning by double-digits at the time and ended up winning by less than five points.

As for the Bradley myth, that has already been debunked. Bradley, lost the absentee vote.

There are 7 key states in play for McCain, which are: Florida, Georgia, Missouri, Indiana, Montana, Ohio, and North Carolina.

If McCain drops ANY of those states, it's impossible to come up with any chance of him winning (realistically). Now he's not guaranteed victory even if he wins all of them, but he does need to win all of them to have a chance.

No Bradely effect, but GOP voters may be less likely to respond to polling questions, distorting the sample. Most pollsters admit there has been an increase in those declining to respond, but there isn't any information as to whether that group is distributed evenly. We do know that GOP voters were 6% less likely to participate in exit polls in 2004, and the effect may greater and involve more types of polls this year.

All I want is for NO ONE to get the majority 270 votes needed to win. Throwing it to the House would REALLY be history in the making (it would be the first time in 184 years).

Also you'd have to think that since the top 3 vote getters get into the House vote, faithless electors would pop up to vote someone else into such an election, perhaps Nader, Gore, Jindhal, etc, etc...who knows.

That would be fun. Just having a simple winner in this horrible two-party system? NOT FUN AT ALL.

I want 269-269 or something of the sort, and then, with McCain electors realizing he will certainly lose in the House, many McCain electors change their vote to Ralph Nader to make it such that House delegations can choose between Obama, McCain, and Nader. Ralph Nader could then win on a compromise through various state delegations (remember in the house election for pres, it's one state, one vote).

The Senate only gets to chose from the top two VP vote getters, and they'd still elect Joe Biden, their guy.

So welcome President Elect Nader and, VP Elect BIden!

Perhaps McCain/Palin electors could do something radical such as vote for Hillary Clinton for President, McCain for VP.

Hillary probably beats out Obama in the House vote, McCain probably win the Senate Vote.

So President Hill-dog, VP McCain, true coalition government.

The problems with politics isn't really the issues being discussed. Rather, the problem is the way the party members act toward each other. Redskins are leading....could this mean a McCain win. However, Obama won the Weekly Reader poll. One of the two most reliable predictors of presidential elections may fall tomorrow.

Wow. 100 posts and no one noticed this. Focus people. Focus!

Three firm predictions.

(1) McCain wins.

Obama/Biden 311 Electoral Votes.

Kerry states + IA + NM + CO + VA + NV + OH.

Obama generally underperforms polls (~1.5% or so) but wins comfortably.

How about everyone stops assuming that Obama voters are savage criminals who will riot if they don't get their way? If that's who's backing him then I'm for McCain. But I'd like to think the Obama voters can lose with grace if it doesn't work out for them.

I will be happy to accept and wear proudly any "NOT MY PRESIDENT" t-shirts after Obama is inaugurated.
