Would You Give This Man $200 Million? Texas Is Counting On It.
The University of Texas School of Law (tied for 16th on your U.S. News scorecards) is apparently not content with their status. They want to be elite. “They’re smart, not dumb, like everybody thinks. They’re smart and they want respect Michael!”
They think they’ve found just the right person to take them to the next level: Dean Lawrence Sager has promised to add $200 million to the UT-Law endowment by 2014. That would nearly double the school’s current endowment, according to the Austin-American Statesman.
Sager, 67, was recruited to UT in 2002 in part for his prowess in building a law school’s reputation from the ground up — something he did in his previous job at New York University’s law school. That reputation is packaged, almost disguised, by a disarming personality as exuberant as the tangled head of hair that often looks as if it will take flight. Law school staffers say they love his frequently wicked humor.
Hair and humor is all good, but $200 million? In this market? It sounds like a tough sell.
And the reason for this push, after the jump.
The stated goal of the campaign is to move UT-Law into the top ten in the U.S. News rankings:
Hitting his $200 million target, Sager says, is crucial to attracting top faculty and the best students, essential ingredients in his drive to elevate the school from 16th in annual U.S. News and World Report rankings to the Top 10, alongside law schools such as Yale, Harvard and Stanford. For the past 20 years, UT School of Law has maintained a ranking in the Top 20 but never cracked the Top 10.
So, we now live in a world where the size of your endowment directly correlates to the quality of your education? It’s not clear that even Sager believes that:
“What a good law school does,” Sager said, “is it incubates a habit of mind that says when making judgments about the right course of action, you are driven not by passion but by reason.”It does that, he said, by creating an environment where “discourse and exchange” can thrive. “I think in a specific way this is what drew me to law school,” he said, “this sense of seriousness about language and ideas.”
Judgment, reason, ideas … you can’t really purchase these law school characteristics.
But you need to pay top faculty top dollar, And U.S. News cares about how much you are spending, and many law students reflexively do whatever U.S. News tells them to do. So:
“You find yourself worrying about the rankings much too much, but you can’t not care about these rankings,” Sager said. “They affect your ability to attract the best students and faculty. One of the key ways to affect those rankings is to spend more money.”
You almost feel bad for Sager. He knows that you can’t simply buy a school into the elite, yet he is charged with doing just that, during an global economic crisis at that.
We hope he succeeds. The comedic value of Texans making fun of “elites” when they themselves are well-heeled elites will be worth its weight in gold oil.
Update: Speaking of UT Law, they’re hosting a very interesting symposium in January 2009, “The Rise of Appellate Litigators and State Solicitors General.” It’s timed to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the creation of the Office of Texas Solicitor General. More details here.

UT should replace UChicago in the top 10!
1 is first to have AIDS.
There's NO way GULC is budging from T14. NO WAY
Hopefully he does a better job with this than he has in the last few years... where UT has bled good professors and dropped in the rankings.
There are already 4 STATE SCHOOLS in the TOP 10: CALIFORNIA, PENNSYLVANIA, MICHIGAN AND VIRGINIA.
No need to add TEXAS!
Is he part ewok?
You idiot, UPenn is not a state school.
let me break this down:
Marriage between a man and a woman is the only natural companionship. The anatomy just doesn't work any other way.
We can allow unnatural marriages, but that opens the door to endless possibilities.
The question becomes how wide you allow that door to open. The more its opened, the more society will grow "tolerant" of marriages once thought impossible. Slippery slope, I know, but in this case it works. Don't kid yourself by thinking gay marriage will not lead to sanctioned polygamy, incest and pedophilia down the road, whether it be 10 years or 100 years.
American families are being destroyed enough as it is, we should leave them alone.
Experience at building a law school's reputation from the ground up?
Umm NYLS still is T2
13: wtf??
Harvard = TTT
10 -- right on
13 is confused, he has no idea where he is or what he is saying.
10 -- I'm not following your so-called "point."
BTW, U Penn is most definitely not a state school.
12-
U Penn State is obviously a state school
1. Contexts of paradigm
“Society is part of the meaninglessness of consciousness,” says Lyotard; however, according to de Selby[1] , it is not so much society that is part of the meaninglessness of consciousness, but rather the dialectic, and eventually the rubicon, of society. However, if the dialectic paradigm of reality holds, we have to choose between postmaterial narrative and the dialectic paradigm of context. The characteristic theme of Tilton’s[2] model of libertarianism is the common ground between sexual identity and society.
The primary theme of the works of Gaiman is a mythopoetical reality. Thus, the subject is contextualised into a that includes narrativity as a whole. Long[3] implies that we have to choose between the dialectic paradigm of reality and postcultural capitalist theory.
However, Bataille uses the term ‘modern posttextual theory’ to denote not theory, as libertarianism suggests, but pretheory. If the neodialectic paradigm of discourse holds, we have to choose between libertarianism and Debordist situation.
In a sense, Sartre suggests the use of modern posttextual theory to modify sexual identity. The premise of libertarianism states that language serves to exploit the Other.
However, the subject is interpolated into a that includes sexuality as a totality. Bataille’s analysis of libertarianism suggests that the purpose of the observer is social comment.
2. Gaiman and modern posttextual theory
In the works of Gaiman, a predominant concept is the distinction between ground and figure. Thus, the characteristic theme of Buxton’s[4] model of libertarianism is the role of the reader as artist. D’Erlette[5] states that we have to choose between modern posttextual theory and cultural preconceptualist theory.
“Art is meaningless,” says Lacan; however, according to Parry[6] , it is not so much art that is meaningless, but rather the dialectic of art. But Sontag promotes the use of cultural socialism to attack sexism. If the dialectic paradigm of reality holds, we have to choose between subcapitalist dialectic theory and postpatriarchialist libertarianism.
“Society is part of the rubicon of reality,” says Debord. In a sense, the subject is contextualised into a dialectic paradigm of reality that includes culture as a paradox. Lacan suggests the use of modern posttextual theory to challenge and modify sexual identity.
Therefore, the primary theme of the works of Joyce is the bridge between reality and society. In Finnegan’s Wake, Joyce examines the dialectic paradigm of narrative; in Ulysses, although, he analyses the dialectic paradigm of reality.
But Werther[7] suggests that we have to choose between libertarianism and precapitalist materialism. The characteristic theme of Scuglia’s[8] analysis of the capitalist paradigm of consensus is the dialectic, and some would say the failure, of subcultural class.
Thus, the stasis, and thus the fatal flaw, of modern posttextual theory prevalent in Joyce’s Finnegan’s Wake emerges again in Ulysses, although in a more conceptualist sense. Sartre uses the term ‘pretextual desituationism’ to denote not, in fact, discourse, but postdiscourse.
It could be said that if modern posttextual theory holds, the works of Joyce are not postmodern. The primary theme of the works of Joyce is a mythopoetical whole.
However, Baudrillard promotes the use of capitalist construction to deconstruct outmoded perceptions of sexual identity. The characteristic theme of la Fournier’s[9] critique of modern posttextual theory is the difference between class and society.
3. Narratives of economy
In the works of Stone, a predominant concept is the concept of subdialectic art. In a sense, an abundance of desituationisms concerning not theory, but posttheory may be revealed. In Natural Born Killers, Stone denies the dialectic paradigm of reality; in Platoon he examines modern posttextual theory.
“Sexual identity is impossible,” says Derrida. Therefore, Humphrey[10] implies that we have to choose between libertarianism and material precapitalist theory. Sartre suggests the use of the deconstructivist paradigm of discourse to read society.
But libertarianism holds that reality is used to reinforce capitalism. Bataille uses the term ‘modern posttextual theory’ to denote a postcapitalist reality.
However, the primary theme of the works of Madonna is the common ground between class and sexuality. Lacan uses the term ‘cultural substructuralist theory’ to denote the futility, and subsequent stasis, of dialectic class.
Therefore, Marx promotes the use of libertarianism to challenge archaic, sexist perceptions of language. The main theme of Buxton’s[11] analysis of the dialectic paradigm of reality is the role of the reader as participant.
But Debord suggests the use of the preconceptual paradigm of narrative to deconstruct and read society. The characteristic theme of the works of Madonna is the bridge between class and consciousness.

University of TTTexas?
Elie post youtube of the Godfather scene!
Is Waco Christian University of Texas Institute of Law a state school or private?
21 wtf?
wow, couldnt tell who posted this after reading it, had to scroll to the top, saw Elie's name, pleasantly shocked.
That said, GW will be the first to crack the T14, UT has no chance.
13 Here.
13 just proved the gays are the wrong.
Elie, I'm not down with the haters, but you do have some grammar problems in your first paragraph here:
"The University of Texas School of Law (tied for 16th on your U.S. News scorecards) is apparently not content with their status. They want to be elite."
Should be: "is apparently not content with ITS status. IT wants to be elite."
I thought it was "I'm smart ... I want respect, Michael"? Isn't this when Vito complains to Michael about being passed over, because that's "what Pop wanted"?
Nice reference though, although a Godfather quote seems more appropriate for a "I killed my associates to maintain my PPP" post...
Why is that man smiling? 1, 2, 3
I really can't believe UPenn State at Dickinson isn't going to play for the National Championship this year. That kind of choke combined with Joe Pa's decline could really hurt them in the USNews rankings. Might fall out of the top ten soon.
i'm nervous about people who smile too much in texas

33 - the Warden School's MBA program will take a hit in the rankings too.
Rahm Emmanuel hates Texas.
13, no one is asking for incest and pedophilia to be legal. to equate gay marriage with the aforementioned is ludacris b/c the differences are not matters of degree but rather of kind. gay rights is precisely what it is - equal rights for gays, recognized by the state (specifically w/r/t marriage) - it is not about giving rights to pedofiles or the right to perform incest. would you also argue that giving equal rights to a person, regardless of race is a slippery slope that would in 100 years grant equal rights to a dog? also, even if they are matters of degree, that is precisely why laws exist. they exist to set boundaries of human conduct in the name of justice, fairness and freedom. it is and has always been a balancing act. and it is an ever changing balancing act that gets adjusted as society changes (for better or for worse). in some societies, it is a crime for a woman to show her face in public. everything is relative. it's fine to vote for prop 8 if you find gay marriage to be morally wrong or against your religion, but to vote for it and argue that everyone should b/c its a slippery slope that could lead to society being open to incest or worse is simply moronic and misplaced logic. how do you think laws get made up and revised and amended over the course of human history?
""Our alums, and there are 16,000 living graduates, love this guy," "
So, they want to raise 200 million from 16,000 people in this economy... or 'just' $12,500 per living alum, after expenses. That's nigh-impossible.
if the zwinky keeps blinking at me, does that equate to consent?
UPenn (University of Pennsylvania) is an ivy league, non-state school.
Penn State is the state school.
31, if you're going to correct someone, at least have your sh*t together. It was Fredo, not Vito. Vito was the original Godfather (Brando).
Elie, I'm not trying to bust your balls (they're way too many people doing that already) but you can't use quotes and then change the line. Either quote Fredo verbatim or use [brackets]
I thought fatty made an Arrested Development reference. No such luck.
40 - where does UPenn State (as discussed in prior posts) fall? LOL
Why can't you idiots understand that Penn State UNIVERSITY is not UPENN?
UPenn is an Ivy League school in Philadelphia. Penn St. Dickinson is a TTT in Harisburg or some other TTTown.
Cornell is also an Ivy, but it sucks ass.
Cornell is also an "Ivy," but it sucks ass.
I'm going to Mahhrrs. I'M GOING TO MAHHRRS!
I'm nervous that i'm at penn stttate and not upenn.
nervous t10 1l
Yeah, but that's Cornell. Of course they're shitty.
As for raising money, it's not impossible when you've got alums like Joe Jamail....
Why is Cornell ranked so high? Nothing really comes out of there.

@ 40 - apparently you're new here. GO JOEPA!!!
Let's hope Sager can keep it in his pants long enough to accomplish any of his goals. He had a number of prominent affairs while at NYU
Is that Jim Henson?
So any adult should be able to get married? Whether related or retarded? How about to multiple people? Who is to say only adults should get married? For the past 09235709823543 years humans typically got married around the age of 13. What’s wrong with a 10 year old marrying a 90 year old if they are in love? What if they don’t even make love but want to get married? These are all “civil rights” issues, they just have not gotten the traction that homosexuals have gotten. Will gays destroy the country? No. Will the dilution of marriage, and therefore the family, destroy the country? Yes. Just like any other law, any other moral issue, the line must be drawn somewhere. I challenge you to draw a line better than the citizens of California just enacted: that only one unrelated nonretarded male can marry one unrelated nonretarded female.
As a GW2L, I love it, and also realize that there is no way in hell that we'll be the next T14 because of the large night school program- will be lucky to stay top 25 this year with the rankings system change...
40 and 44--if you're really falling for the UPenn State joke you're either (1) very stupid and gullible, or (2) very new to this site. Hope it's the latter.

Elie, I can forgive the boring stories about law students, the constant grammar mistakes, and the morbid obesity. But I will not stand for your misquoting of Fredo Corleone. Disgraziata!

Penn State = Pennsylvania State University (Public)

While there is no doubt that if the debate were about football, the Nittany Lions of Penn State would more than likely crush the Quakers of UPenn but in terms of law school rankings, it's the other way around.
Again, 10 - You're an IDIOT!
Thanks for providing 0 evidence that you are born gay. Anyways, according to liberal (your) logic anything we are born with is natural and therefore good. This makes perfect sense because liberals are the ones trying to prevent abortions when the baby is born with defects.
Did I just say being gay is a defect? I think I did.... but instead of killing humans with defects (like liberals do), we let them into society and love them the best we can but do not let them screw it up by giving them rights not intended for them (like we currently do).
50 --you're a fu*king idiot. seriously, i'm not just name calling. after months of this debate, haven't you figured out that your argument is stupid? there's a legal concept called consent. by law a 10 year old cannot consent to marriage. a "retarded" person cannot consent to marriage. a gay adult CAN consent to marriage. arguments about pedophila and bigamy, and dogs, children, and your fu*king pet monkey being able to marry your mom are all worthless and will never "gain traction."
i'm not even saying that gay marriage is or is not moral and/or wrong. but if you're going to argue against it, stop using dumb ass logic.
Elie, I can forgive the boring stories about law students, the constant grammar mistakes, and the morbid obesity. But I will not stand for your misquoting of Fredo Corleone. Disgraziata!
and sorry, i meant 55, not 50.
50, you're alright.

72:
You accuse me of bad logic while your entire point is that the law prevents 10 year olds from getting married. I hate to tell you this, but the law prevents gays from getting married. You need to provide REASON why 10 year olds, in all cases, should never be able to consent to marriage, not just point out that the law prevents it when you are arguing a law should be overturned.
10, you are a douche. Who cares if more state schools are added to the top ten. If they have the money, let them drop it.
70/76 - It's been firmly established on this site that UPenn State Dickinson is a state school and a TTT.
*eagerly hoping that 70/76 is new to the site and takes the bait*
70 /76, please see 57. do you REALLY believe that people on here don't know the difference b/w the two?!?! it's a running joke on this site...
10, you are a douche. Who cares if more state schools are added to the top ten. If they have the money, let them drop it.
Just so everyone knows, CLS is better than any state school.

72 &77 stop talking about that topic. Focus on this one.
Really enjoying people who are taking the bait on (what I can only hope is) a flame of not getting the UPenn State joke...
Timothy Leary + Alan Ginsburg = Lawrence Sager
Cornell to T-6!!!!!
72 - If we going by legal concepts then there is a legal concept of marriage which has historically been limited to a man and woman.
I for one think that this legal concept should be abolished. Marriage should be a religous concept. In Europe personal records were hostorically kept by the church. There was no birth certificates, there were baptismal certificates. Proof of marriage was kept by the church. Along comes the USA with a separation of church and state and decides that the state will keep track of these items. Fine as an adminstrative matter but realize where this marriage concept came from and how it came about that the state is in charge of keeping track of it.
Civil marriage should be abolished and replaced with a system (civil union, civil partnership, contract of commitment or whatever) that permits two persons of any gender to commit and have all legal rights (which are really economic rights) that marriage currently has. All marriages currently in effect will be legally redesignated.
PROBLEM SOLVED, people can stop wasting their time on this crap and put their resources towards fixing the economy.
Along came the USA and didn't do arrange marriages between 13 year olds. Bad America! Look at what the current definition of marriage has done in the last 200 years!
55/77--i'm gonna take the bait here, but i really hope you're joking.
the law prevents gays from marrying based on the determination that marriage is between a man and a woman. not based on lack of consent or capacity.
therefore gay marriage will not create a possibility of 10 year olds, animals, inanimate objects, etc. being able to marry. this is because they're based on entirely different legal notions. you're comparing apples to oranges with your argument.
again, read the last part of my comment. i'm not arguing for or against gay marriage, i'm just saying that your argument, which i've heard many times before, is just plain stupid. if you're a lawyer, or even a law student, you really should be able to figure it out.
55/77--i'm gonna take the bait here, but i really hope you're joking.

There is nothing wrong with marrying your same sex conjoined twin.
89
Your gender and your race are two entirely separate legal concepts yet they are tied together for purposes of gay marriage.
13 - "The anatomy just doesn't work any other way."
While I agree with 13 that widespread homosexuality has the potential to destroy our civilization just like it destroyed Greek civilization, I just wanted to make an observation that the anatomy DOES work. Its called the poopenshaft - homos put all kind of things in there, including their weinershnitzels - ewwww!!
87--i agree with you.
from a legal perspective, i have yet to hear one logical argument against gay marriage. instead i keep hearing these lame analogies that don't hold any water.
i think this is because those against gay marriage ultimately are against it on a moral basis (with lame attempts to use the law to support their position). and i'm not going to pass judgment if gay marriage goes against their religious and their morals and beliefs, unlike slavery, for example, which had no legal OR religious basis.
however, if you believe in separation of church and state then religious arguments against gay marriage go out the window too.
so what you're proposing makes sense. take religion out of marriage and there's no basis for people to argue that gay marriage is illegal/wrong/etc...you did say two persons of any gender--of course it should be two (sane) adults of any gender.
Does UT even have a law school? I mean, we all know that Texas Tech has a law school, but not the school in Austin.

Really, 37? It's "ludacris"? Hey, I need change for the subway -- got 50 Cent? I'm trying to buy a single roll of paper towels, but they only come in a Tupac. At least they let me buy a single Q-Tip. I learned yesterday that my grandfather's parents weren't married -- I felt bad for the Ol' Dirty Bastard so I made him some Vanilla Ice-T and brought him some eminems. I'd like to say that I like Robin Hood, but among the characters I think Lil' Jon is less Juvenille.
Not to get too far off topic from debating about gay marriage, but Sager's strategy is idiotic. UT used to get tons of great students because it was cheap. It cost $5,000 a year to go there vs. $40,000 at some other place. If you wanted to work in Texas, it was a no-brainer.
Now, he thinks the best thing to do to get students is exactly what every other school is doing: blow tons of money on crap and make the students go $200,000 in debt to attend. He should have done the opposite and made the school free. Why the hell would I go to UT at $40,000 a year instead of Harvard, even if I do want to live in Texas?
STFU 93.
96, if your choice is UT for free or Harvard for $40K, you should still go to Harvard.
95 - lol, you got me there. I admit, i cant spell. sue me.
UT is a good school, and Sager is going to help it, no doubt. It keeps improving, while there are a variety of schools that are dropping. Penn, Chicago, and Michigan are going to cede their positions sooner than later. Northwestern, UT, and GWU are schools clearly on the rise. Obviously this is a broad brush, however. There are just aging faculty at some of these places... and I might add Columbia to the list, although its reputation is so high that, as with Yale, a few bad years won't hurt it.
The personal injury lawyers who are UT Law alums can certainly afford to pony up a measly $200M. Heck, Jamail can write that check.
The only law school that is making a big jump in the next US News rankings is Boston University. I know from a source high up at the publication.
98 - not if you want to live in Texas. If you're at the top of UT's class, you make the same as a Harvard grad, in Texas, and you have zero debt. The Harvard grad spends five years paying off his debt, whereas pre-Sager UT grads had it paid off as summer associates, and spend their early associate years in 4,000 square foot houses driving BMW's.
If you want to live in some other place for some reason, then yes, you should go to Harvard.
-96
102 - I banged a girl from BU Law. The things that girl could do with her legs...
96. exactly. It was like UCLA back in the days before it jumped from 8K to 28K in a few years.
100 -- GWU??? Are you kidding me? Let me guess, you're a GWU douchebag law student... GeTTT the fuck outta here with your bullshit and go fellate someone in hopes of getting a job...
106- I am absolutely not a GWU student. I had better options. I'm simply talking about directionality. I'm not saying that GWU is better than, e.g. Georgetown. Nor am I saying that Gtown is on the decline. I'm merely saying that GWU has shown a marked improvement over the past few years and it will likely continue.
Again, don't attend GWU, don't care about how good or bad they are, just pointing out a trend.
106 - and one more point. I'm just assuming you are defending Gtown, since I find those students tend to be the most rabid about GWU praise.
-100
106- and one more point. I mention Georgetown b/c I'm assuming you are implicitly defending them against any comparison with GWU. I am making no such comparison, so simmer down.
The man is a werewolf. That said, I will pitch in a few more bucks if he stops sending me 10-page letters begging for dough. I mean, for crying out loud, I think you can get your point across in a page, Senior Wolf.
I'm doing every single thing I can to prevent myself from unleashing a torrent of bitterness and mockery.
> The Harvard grad spends five years paying off his debt, whereas pre-Sager UT grads had it paid off as summer associates, and spend their early associate years in 4,000 square foot houses driving BMW's. <
It's not much fun driving a BMW in a 4,000 square foot houe, as 4,000 square foot in not all that big if you're in a car. Much better to simply live in the house and drive the BMW on the freeway.
And it didn't even take a Harvard grad to figure that one out...
> The Harvard grad spends five years paying off his debt, whereas pre-Sager UT grads had it paid off as summer associates, and spend their early associate years in 4,000 square foot houses driving BMW's. <
Or it would be much easier for you to simply drive the BMW then having your 4,000 square foot house drive it.
And I went to UT to also figure that one out.
the best thing about UT Law is the "fun" factor. You get to live in Austin for three years....and that's hard to beat.
Austin is the AIDS capital of Texas.

You don't have to work in TX if you go to UT. I know tons of people from UT who are now working in NY. All the top firms interview with us, tuition is cheap, Austin is one of the greatest cities in the country, and UT law students are more sociable and well adjusted than some of their peers.
And we'll have that $200 mill as soon as Joe Jamail gets around to it.
(for anyone who's curious: Joe Jamail is the "Texas King of Torts." He has been extremely successful and won one of largest settlements in history. To see him threaten to beat up opposing counsel and call the guy "fat boy" search for "Texas deposition" on YouTube)
119 is nervous UT 1L thinking no one outside of UT knows who jamail is or what the Texas depo is like
wait a second... University of Texas Tech has an undefeated 2nd ranked football team AND has 16th ranked law school AND now they'll have $200 million? Sounds like University of Penn State law school (all of their campuses) needs to be afraid!
Jamail has already endowed everything there is to be endowed at UT. Might as well change the name. Do you have any other sucessful alums?
this dude looks like chong from cheech and chong
Seriously, though, Sager thinks that Texans are going to give money to a jew?
96-Juvenile spells his name with one "l."
GW 2Ls cannot get firm jobs this summer.
96/103 - Sager is not the reason why in-state tuition has been on the rise. The state used to fund a large percentage of every law students tuition. Over the last 5-10 years that funding has been largely phased out, which means higher tuition and more need for fundraising. Also, total alumni giving, % participation, and $ spent per student all factor into the rankings, so Sager is right that money matters.
26 - UT was in the T14 around 2001-03.
