Bonus/Salary Meeting at Venable
Venable is generally not a market leader when it comes to associate bonuses or salary. In fact, they usually don’t announce their bonuses until January.
But today at 3:00 p.m. associates have been called in to discuss “the firm’s 2008 results and outlook for 2009.”
Kirkland had a meeting today to discuss the obvious, and maybe Venable is doing the same thing. But a tipster is at least slightly concerned about the need for today’s festivities:
Considering that we don’t usually hear anything about bonuses or salaries until January (and we’re definitely NOT market), it should be interesting to see what goes down at this meeting.
Our tipster is concerned because of Latham. So far, top firms haven’t followed Latham’s salary freeze lead. But some firms do seem to be hedging their bets and putting off decisions until January.
By the end of today, we should know where Venable stands.

I am going to be a summer at JD, and I as hoping to get a straight answer (sorry to thread jack). I wanted to work at JD, I actually liked everyone I met there. My impression from the attorneys I met, and some other people I talked to, is that the firm takes care of people that work hard and produce quality work. This sounded fine to me. I hear people complain about the fact that not everyone makes the same salary based on year or same bonus based on year, but that the partners you work for evaluate the actual work people do, and you essentially get paid for what you produce. Is this accurate, and if so, what is there to complain about? It seems like a solid business model where associates don't get paid for padding hours or producing garbage.

In my experience, the population you describe totals zero.

We as associates don't know what happens to other people (i.e. whether some people are shortchanged unfairly) but I have been more than happy so far.

JD Ohio offices are dying a slow death. Virtually no local clients, so everyone just services other JD offices. The lawyer headcount in Ohio is lower now than it was 10 years ago. All the decent lawyers have been transferred to other offices.

I got plenty of offers. I just haven't decided which firm because the firms wanted to "call me back" to their offices to meet everyone who I would be working with, and I wanted to postpone that until after the semester was over, so now my project during winter break is to go on these "callbacks" and meet everybody and decide which firm I want to work for
jones day cleveland does not pay bonues. it has not paid bonuses in a decade (I summered there and am still good friends with current and former associates there). good IP litigation practice there, though. (low overhead - clients love that.) very formal environment, though.

Is Cuyahoga County PD's office looking?
JD Chicago and JD New York are fine, they actually paid bonuses, and this year, in lieu of a bonus, gave extra large base salary bumps equivalent to a bonus.
But at JD DC, they don't do bonuses, and didn't give the extra salary increases this year. No explanation, but it's understood than the partner in charge at JD DC doesn't believe in bonuses, and morale or recruiting problems as a result be damned. It's quite arbitrary and unfair, but that's the JD DC way.

@38 They're like 7/11, they may not always be doing business, but they're always open.
Jones Day New York and California offices gave huge base salary bumps in lieu of the market or above-market base plus bonuses that were recently paid to some of the associates on a case-by-case basis. These associates now make base what other big firms are paying as base plus bonus. I'd take that any day. JD is a great place, there's plenty of work to go around, and it is one of the few firms that is still able to grow and be successful, even in the current economy. To me it's a no brainer.

Can't believe this even made it on ATL. Venable is a third tier firm who tries to paint itself as first rate by paying its 1st years 160 but then pays its 3rd and 4th years 170. Give me a break.
Venable announced a 2009 salary freeze today at the meeting.

One would think fiscally conservative policies related to salaries in an environment where law firms are going under like investment banks would be viewed with a little less smugness. But, then again, you're probably a law student anyway.

If the client doesn't wanna pay the bill, or wants a discount, or whatever, then they're gonna get it. But, the partner doesn't wanna look like they're bringing in low-end work, so it's the associate's fault (bad quality work or too much time spent). Amazin' how much that happens.
