Cadwalader: Where ‘Human Resources’ Is a Term of Art

Cadwalader Wickersham Taft new logo CWT AboveTheLaw blog.jpgI’m not sure how you make a “Happy Holidays” e-card mildly insulting, but then again I’ve never been schooled in the dark arts practiced by Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft.

Over the weekend, CWT sent around an inspirational holiday greeting card. Check out the screenshot:

CWT holiday screenshot.jpg

Great! Lots of firms send out holiday greetings. But does every firm send out cards to the people they laid off a few months ago? Because that’s what CWT did.

Let’s explore how CWT messed up what should have been a great idea, after the jump.

According to CWT, the firm decided to go with e-cards and pass the savings along to charitable organizations like the American Cancer Society.

If you click on the “Thanks” link in the holiday e-card you are jumped to a series of “I’m thankful for” platitudes written by CWT employees. Most of these are nice: “I’m thankful for my puppy,” or “I’m thankful for the library staff.”

But do 96 people recently canned by Cadwalader really need to be informed of all the things that people who still have jobs are thankful for? This is a perfectly fine and even actively nice holiday message, but why can’t CWT just be smart about it and only send it to people currently employed by the firm? Or at least only the people who have found new jobs already?

Great thought by CWT, but really bad form.

Giving Thanks Holiday E-Card [Cadwalader]

Elie, I'm not as down on you as some of the others, but why the negative, "populist" tone to every post? We're all (or at least mostly) practicing attorneys or law students and fully capable of making our own conclusions. 75% of each of your posts are fine, it's the 25% that you dedicate to lecturing that turns me off.

it's not clear from your post that CWT sent the card to its laid off employees, even though that's what you implied.

avatar
19 Posted by guest | Permalink Tuesday, December 16, 2008 10:14 AM

I'm guessing this is how it happened - when layoffs went down, someone updated the firm's contact database with the laid off attorneys' emails. And the distribution for the holiday card list was culled from the database without much thought (heck, they're probably low on marketing and administrative staff for this kind of thing, ya know?). So the formers were included. Not smart, but no big deal really.

I don't see this as a big deal, even though I was one of the Cadwalader 96. The firm regularly sends holiday e-cards to all CWT alumni in good standing, which includes us. It would be stranger, and ruder in my opinion, for the firm to have taken us out of the email list.

As for the card itself, this was among the more tactful I've seen (despite the cheesy music and the inordinate number of photos). My favorite paralegal is now married; one of my favorite associate colleagues finished a marathon. I appreciated the updates, and am glad these people still have jobs.

On the other hand, they better enjoy these jobs while they last. Which probably won't be for much longer...

22 Posted by Jack Bauer | Permalink Tuesday, December 16, 2008 10:19 AM

I think the card is a good idea. It’s a great way to test the internal security procedures practiced by the partners and their families. There is no other explanation for why a partner would post a picture of his family, with his name, unless he was sending the following message to recently fired associates “I dare you.” Even I never sent pictures of Kim and me to President Logan asking him to give thanks, so I have to respect the move.

I don't think the card was bad form. I think they are trying to remind us that family and friends etc. are more important than money. Not a bad time to be thinking of that in economic times like this. However, check out the beefcake shot in the left part of the 'h' in thanks. How/why did they let that one get in?

It was emailed to me on Friday night (see below) - the oddest card I have ever received. I was half expecting to see a cute little child saying "I'm glad my Daddy/Mommy hasn't been laid off (yet)."

New York to 100!!! And more porridge for Uganda! These hungry Ugandan schoolchildren are waiting for CWT to outsource Biglaw jobs - http://kasiisiporridge.org/default.aspx.

avatar
33 Posted by guest | Permalink Tuesday, December 16, 2008 10:35 AM

No matter what CWT does, it will be critized by Elie. If they didn't send the former associates an e-card, you would have called them scrooges for not caring. They get the e-card and CWT is viewed as acting in bad taste. Nevermind the fact that CWT gave its former associates a very generious severance AND didn't try to hide the fact that they were laying off associates via performance based crap. Why the hell is Elie posting all these negative posts about a firm who "got it right" when laying off associates and yet other firms who either paid crappy severance and/or laid off people in a stealthlike manner get off with only a "firm XYZ laid off folks" blog posting? Obviously someone has an axe to grind...I would prefer Elie to not use his position as ATL editor to obsessively disparage a firm he has issues with. It's like the Obama/McCain thing all over again.

I don't normally comment, but the writing in this post is abysmal, not to mention repetitive. What was bad taste? Implicitly it seems the e-mail was sent to the laid off associates, but where does it say that? The basic premise of a story is who, what, when, why, where and how. Is it too much to ask if we get those details? Moreover, if we say "bad form" three times, does it make it true?

are you new? While i agree it is bad for to send the card to recently dismissed associates, how does it possibly make sense to "only send [the card] to people currently employed by the firm?" When a business sends a holiday card, it is about developing business. The whole point is to send it to people outside of the firm.
