Career Alternatives for Law Firms: Film Sets?

damages dewey leboeuf.jpgIf things are a little slow in New York law firms, perhaps they should consider starring roles in the pictures. We've covered movie shootings at firms before, because it seems somewhat glamorous to host the Hollywood types and to see your firm later on the big screen.

But now we're getting news that Dewey & LeBoeuf has deigned to be a set for the little screen. From a Dewey tipster last week:

[T]hought you might be interested to hear that yesterday and today we have production crews from the tv series "Damages" in our building at 1301 Ave of the Americas filming scenes for their upcoming season. It's quite amusing actually. Crews are on our 23rd and 43rd floors, so people are tip-toeing around and there are signs all over the place that read "Filming in Progress ... please avoid the Area."

This is the second time D&L has been used as a set. Scenes from Michael Clayton were also filmed here. Needless to say there were many star-struck associates who got a chance to see George Clooney walking the halls.

In case you don't know about it, Damages is a legal series on FX that starts Glenn Close (aka, bunny boiler from Fatal Attraction), William Hurt and Ted Danson.

Oscar-winning film Michael Clayton and mega-wattage star George Clooney meet the standards of Biglaw prestige. Film away. But a legal series on FX?

Oh, Dewey, like Glenn Close, your acting career is on the decline.

Before Thanksgiving, we were hearing rumors of layoffs in Dewey's New York office. Like an aging Hollywood star, going to the small screen may be an act of desperation. Filming revenues must pay the salaries of a couple of first year associates.

Are D&L's offices that nice or were location scouts just lazy

WRONG! Damages is a good show and Glenn Close is great in it. The only thing on the decline is this blog.

Well played there 4. FX has better dramas than any big network. The Shield, Rescue Me, Damages, The Riches, and Nip/Tuck.

The 43rd floor at D&L is super elegant. The others are very nice as well.

D&L's offices have nothing on Skadden's. I still don't understand why film crews avoid their NYC office. Debevoise's offices are really nice too.

Damages was nominated for a number of Emmy's and I'm pretty sure Glenn Close won both an Emmy and Golden Globe for season one...

#6, yes, apparently you missed everything. FX is a cutting edge network that puts out some of the best quality on tv. But you can feel free to keep your head buried in the sand and your a$$ firmly glued to Desperate Housewives if you would prefer. I guess that goes for Kash too.

Uh, Damages' first season was pretty awesome, you should try watching it Kash. And ripping FX is pretty weird, as FX has a better show lineup than the vaunted HBO. The Shield (though this one's over), Damages, Always Sunny, Rescue Me? Nip/Tuck is highly entertaining crap.

Close was good on The Shield as a foil for Michael Chiklis. I was sorry to see her leave the show.

Damages is the best television show I have ever watched. Period. I kid you not. It is phenomenal. It had the editing and intrigue and deconstruction of Lost and the taut and superb acting of heavyweights. Marcia Gay Harden (oscar winner) is on this season as well.

And it won best actress and best supporting actor last season. It really is phenomenal. You can watch the first season online at like tvshare or something. It's worth it. I started watching the second episode onward and was hooked. WATCH IT!

What if I get laid while watching TV? Does that qualify for half-skadden or full skadden with a reach around?

So who else put the hot guy lawyer from JAG as their favorite legal character on ATL's dating thing?

Yes, I filled it out.

21: this is only truly impressive if you also eat a pastrami sandwich while watching tv and having sex...the most sensual of the salty, cured meats.

RIP Thelen.

Dewey's NY office isn't its only gem. The DC office is way better than anyone else in DC. It's amazing.

And firing 5 people in a firm of over 1,000 lawyers is not a lay-off, again.

Danson is no longer on Damages. Frobisher is dead, motherfuckers! Or did you forget?

Seriously, Netflix season 1 if you have the time - well worth it.

28 - nope, frobischer is back. The previews show it. He recovers. You know they have to have him back so Patty Hewes can confront him over the death of her baby 20 years ago. Oops - did I just give away too much?

Dewey & LeBoeuf in NYC was also the office in Michael Clayton with George Clooney.

The Dewey offices at 1301 are slightly better than average. The views suck (unless looking at bland modern skyscrapers is your thing) and it's a bit cramped (until the layoffs come), but it has a pleasant enough contemporary office style, passable conference rooms, and a good cafeteria.

It's not the swankiest digs in town by far, but for the money it's probably affordable and stylish enough for most film or television concerns.

4, 5, 12, 19 - so right! This show is great, and Close and Danson are so right in their roles. Cannot wait for the series to come back - next month, I think.
