Legal Eagle Wedding Watch 12.14: Penn Hate

champagne glasses small.jpg
Christopher Hitchens has famously declared that “the four most over-rated things in life are champagne, lobster, anal sex and picnics.” LEWW humbly submits an addition to this list: the University of Pennsylvania. Or “Penn State.” Whatever you call it, we’re tired of it. Its graduates are ridiculously overrepresented on the weddings page. (We haven’t done a scientific survey, but we’d venture to guess that we’ve written more about newlyweds from Penn than from any other school—even New York schools.) And really, what’s so great about Penn, other than its football team?

As you can probably guess, it’s another Penn-heavy week on the Legal Eagle Wedding Watch. But don’t worry; we’ve lightened the tedium with a few other degrees—and some strikingly attractive contestants:

1. Stacey Sarfatti and Rustin Paul

2. Tamar Shuldiner and Keith Levenberg

3. Melissa Hutson and Matthew Rizzo

Click on the link below for these couples’ pictures and credentials.

1. Stacey Sarfatti and Rustin Paul
(Buy them a hand towel.)

The Case:
- Nice educational credentials for this couple, who had a nondenominational ceremony in Indonesia and a Jewish ceremony in New York. Stacey was summa at Penn and holds a master’s from UCLA and an MBA from Columbia. She works for Westin Hotels and Resorts.
- The groom also went to Penn State (actually, we’re not being cheeky; he really did go to Penn State) and has a JD and an MBA from Temple. He’s an associate in the New York office of Blank Rome.

The Case Against:
- A previous marriage/divorce for the groom is a blemish on this couple’s otherwise solid record.

2. Tamar Shuldiner and Keith Levenberg
(Buy them a cereal bowl.)

The Case:
- This bride graduated from, yes, the University of Pennsylvania; she also has a master’s in environmental engineering from Stevens Institute.
- The groom was magna at Tufts and has a JD from Columbia. He clerked on the Third Circuit for Sam Alito, but apparently he wasn’t one of the many former clerks Alito tapped for the big leagues after he ascended to SCOTUS. Keith is now an associate at Chadbourne & Parke.

The Case Against:
- We almost gagged on our beignet when we encountered the word “wastewater” in this announcement. Gross. They could have just said “New Jersey” and left it at that.

3. Melissa Hutson and Matthew Rizzo
(Buy them an iron.)

The Case:
- Melissa received both undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Virginia. Matt, also a lawyer, is Georgetown/Columbia. Both the bride and the groom are senior associates at New York law firms, she in the corporate department at Simpson Thacher and he at Willkie Farr & Gallagher.
- Melissa’s father, John Hutson, is a retired Rear Admiral, a former Judge Advocate General of the Navy, and the current dean and president of Franklin Pierce Law Center. A lifelong Republican, he spoke at the 2008 Democratic National Convention and endorsed Barack Obama.

The Case Against:
- Melissa and Matt are quite attractive; it’s a shame neither has a picture on their firm bio to either supplement or refute the impression given by their NYT photo. But that’s a minor quibble and obviously not the couple’s fault. (It’s more an indictment of a law firm culture that treats associates as faceless commodities.)

The Verdict:
Two JDs: check. Hotness: check. Rugged, principled FoB: check. What doesn’t Team Hutson-Rizzo have? Answer: any degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. And that alone is enough to make them our Couple of the Week. Congratulations!
