I'll be rooting against Dreier. I interviewed with the firm during interview week (several months ago), and I have yet to hear anything back. Some professional courtesy would have been nice.

Wondering where you go to school. I also interviewed with them during OCI and of all 30-odd interviews I had, they were the only firm that didn't get back to me. And I was a bit disappointed, because the interviewer (partner) spoke about the firm in a really intriguing way - he kept referring to Marc Dreier without actually mentioning his name, saying things like "he runs things differently here," and "he knows which clients he wants and then goes out and gets them." It was a very weird interview, made even more strange by the fact that they're not a NALP employer, so going into the interview I had been unable to (easily) ascertain basic information like how many attorneys, starting salary, etc.

Dreier LLP is a service company, but not a law firm. This is all a strange set-up.

Marc Dreier provides some sort of umbrella and various practice groups are their own firm with Dreier an equity partner along with that practice group's partners. In NY a law firm can not be an LLP. The service firm may be SOL, but the practice groups are fine.

It is a strange story but true. This is not a story by a disgruntled ex-employee. Dreier was arrested in Canada. Will get bail, since it is not a felony charge -- and will be back in NY on Friday. Not enough money in the bank to cover the next payroll, even if all partners forego being paid. From the details I know, it sounds like greed, a massive sense of entitlement plus a hint of megalomania have brought Dreier to this shameful level. And Dreier was in total and sole control of the books and other partners/staff were just given glib press release type information, ("the firm is in great shape" see Enron for another example).

He lives a lifestyle that is more extravagant than the Queen of England -- without the crown jewels or cash to back it up.

Marc Dreier has a long history of stealing from his clients. He is the king of the shakedown, extortion, misrepresentation, malpractice. It was ok with his partners when he did it to others and they were reaping the benefits. How does it feel now that he's done it to you? Self-centered psycho. You let him do it to others. I fail to see how the two things are related:
Is the firm lacking cash because of Marc Dreier's arrest?
Would it lack cash even if Marc Dreier had not been arrested?
If it lacks cash and cannot pay its employees, it just means that the firm is badly managed or not doing well, and those employees would have anyway been laid off, regardless of M. Dreier's arrest.

The firm is not done because of his arrest. The firm is done because once he was arrested, it was discovered that the escrow accounts had been cleaned out. Sone estimates say $38 million, some more. Dreier is nothing but a glorified landlord. He provides space and services only. He gives groups and/or individual attorneys a 2 or 3 year contract with benchmarks. If the benchmarks are not met, he moves the attorney into a smaller office to shame then and then he boots them out. If they meet their benchmark, they get a percentage of the extra. Well that is if doesn't close shop and they get screwed.

Though the firmhas a very laid back atmosphere and most people there are very cool, the 23rd floor is where the devil and his minions reside. Maec Drrier is a notorious drunk and cokehead and his moods are never the same. He loves to scream (typical smallman complex) and his sociopath assistant (Kate Sullivan) routinely belittles everyone there consistently telling people they will be fired for any arbitrary reason. Anyone there lives in fear of Kate and she is the most hideous assistant many have ever seen.

Marc Dreier is also a scumbag for other reasons. He had an affair with one if the attorney's wife (Mona....no pun I sweat) and then he fired the attorney and made her his other assistant. Mona was not a sociopath like Kate, but hard to give her props for her adulterous affair. Dreier also has another 2-3 female assistants whose only job is to help his other assistants. He probably spends over a half million a year in salary for them alone.

Dreier even though he pals around with Strahan has management that clearly discriminates. Vurtually the whole services staff that was made up of African American employees was fired replaces with young white men who had never even worked in a law firm, yet alone in a copy room. They even had the audacity have to have the African American employees train them. Friends of management were hired to run the services group. THREE family members--2 guys and their sister were put in charge of the department. Can you imagine this kind of nepotism happening at any other large firm on NYC. Maagement and Dreier's assistants routinely hired friends with zero experience and who had never even worked at a law firm. This place was run with a cowboy mentality that was laughable if not so serious. IT people that had never worked at a law firm and didn't even know legal software, secretaries making 6 figures that didn't know much, paralegals that were rtlated to management and who had zero legal experience. This place was a disaster waiting to happen. If Dreier's greed didn't bring it down, the sophmoric and unsophisticated mentality of management would have sooner or later.

I work for a multi-billion dollar corporation and can tell you without a shred of doubt that when payroll goes out the funds are deposited. If you look in our payroll account 10 days before the issue date you would not find enough to pay for a cup of coffee. I've done business with Dreier and while he is the only equity partner and may not be embraced by many competitors the firm has a very viable enterprise and if in the end Dreier goes away the firm will continue. Right now I think what we're seeing is an attempt by other firms to cash in on the panic and try to steal the talent that they want. If there are people cleaning out their desks 10 days before payroll based on a rumor then they must be insane because they still have a job and benefits at this time. Best of Luck.

Well it is definately in the NY Post. This is terrible to have to happen to employees who will now suffer. It was a very strange set-up and a disaster waiting to happen, hat is why no single person should ever hold equity control over any company. What were the other partners thinking, signing up for a set-up like this. That would make them partners in title only, they never really were a partner. With no funds to support the firm, the company is finished. I don't believe that they have all good samaritan employees who will work for free! Plus, he still controls the equity.

Marc's father was the Sidney Dreier of the Dreier theaters in Florida. Marc's brother, Mitchell, runs them. I don't know whether Marc has any ownership of the theaters, but I wonder if the theater group is entangled in Marc's financial affairs.

I used to work there and the racism was very apparent. The nepotism hires had absolutely no management experience whatsoever and were no more qualified than the guys the oversaw. The mail center was run terribly before, but, that's because they had a former secretary running it.

The practice groups were great, a lot of them are really terrific. The actual Dreier "infrastructure" was a clusterf***. The Office Manager knows her size in Gucci, Prada, and Monolo-- but is an absolute imbicile when it comes to running the firm. Lord knows what Marc actually did. There was no business plan at all in that place. I knew it was destined to fail. How do you run a business/firm without a business manager or management team?? You don't. You run a multimillion dollar money feed factory for Marc Dreier's purse that way. The writing was so clearly on the wall, I wondered why people expected to be there for years.

There was no mention in the Canadian MSM until to-day because up here Dreier's a nobody. Of course the Teacher's Pension Fund are definite SOMEBODIES. Dreier LLP is a loose affiliation of professional organizations under the DLLP umbrella that provides office space and other support. For those familiar with private law firm parlance, Marc Dreier is the only equity partner; all other "partners," in effect, are contract partners, whose contracts gernerally provide for a generous base salary calculated on expected collected billings, with a "bonus" provision for collections in excess of the projections on which the salary was based. The attractiveness of this arrangement to all partners not named Dreier was that the contract terms were generally pretty advantageous, particularly for less senior attorneys with significant client billings who would probably have had to wait up to ten more years in a typical big firm structure before receiving what they were actually worth to the firm. The apparent problem was that the firm expanded very rapidly, from < 70 attorneys in the fall of 2006, to over 250 by the summer of 2007, including a major expansion on the West Coast. This takes bucks. In a normal firm environment, it usually takes at least 90 - 120 days before new partners or groups begin generating any revenue, even though thay have already contributed significantly to the overhead. Given the allegations of misuse of client funds, it seems likely that Dreier was parlaying a Ponzi scheme to cover increasing costs until revenues could catch up. In this economy, it is easy to see how the cash flow could never catch up. The impersonation charge merely ripped the cover off the stinking mess of the finances - all of which should be laid at the feet of Marc Dreier, and Dreier alone. Nothing was done at that firm by anyone other than Dreier, including changing (or using) the toilet paper in the restrooms. If there is any good news, the affiliated entities may be able to stay alive on their own, minus Dreier, due to their independent client base, provided the clients pay. Even more troubling than the question of collecting from existing clients, is what clients will do if, indeed, their funds have been misappropriated from trust accounts to keep the Ponzi scheme going. It is highly likely that these clients will sue and this, not Marc's arrest, is the mechanism that will close down the firm's functioning. No one is going to be paid, including the landlord, employees and contract partners, once the clients bring suit. Those attorneys/partners with portable business will survive somewhere, although probably with greatly reduced income, at least for a while. Best of luck to all of them.

I would not be bragging about being the trainer before I came, as you didn't even have a "user's guide" until I created one with the help of Heather and Marita. You would just hand new employees a bunch of old emails in your 30 minute training sessions. Real professional, doubt. Bwfore I came if anyone mentioned the word "styles" people though I was talking about fashion. You didn't even gave the ability to train people how to use Word correctly as I was dumbfounded to see people formatting everything manually, and to my astonisment manually typing TOCs and TOAs (as portrayed by the horror experienced when an attorney needed a TOA run). You're so wrong. Knock, knock Doug. It was all of them, and Doug, I never said it can't be done. The problem was either administrative which means Doug, that IT had to either fix the persons computer or reinstall a certain program. If I couldn't solve the problem, that was the reason. If a problem arose that was new to me, usually, I would figure it out and give them the answer they needed.

The TOC and TOA nighmares were due to too many people with different experiences, different ways of doing things and and working on the same document, different systems, as you well know yourself, has caused documents to crash, corrupt (as you also know) because you and I have talked about it plenty of times. I spent hours as you have cleaning up documents because of it. Also Doug, I never taught anyone to do TOA's manually. It was either to use the freaking program we had, which wasn't the greatest or tagging the document. So, please get your comments straight.

Before you use quotes in a comment, make sure you write exactly what the person tells you. Quotes mean a verbatim comment. I said I couldn't get a job at another firm because I will not get paid what they pay me at Dreier and as far as not passing a WP Dept test, I never said that. What I did say was passing a test to get a job was not easy because I only use shortcuts and the test they give a person has to do everything the long way (i.e. pulldown menus), which means Doug, that I am advanced in my skills. My job does not and never did consist of conflict checks only. I do a great deal more which I have received great comments about my work. As far as my resume, my experience is not with law firms. I've only been working at a law firm for the past 10 years. My experience stems from banking all the way to manufacturing, others in between to legal. I activated it yesterday and already have hits on it. Now it's up to me.

Insurance may not be glamorous, but at least the people in our business would never be crazy enough to do any of the stuff allegedly done by Dreier. Plus my firm has a real partner-associate structure which decreases the chance of one name partner taking the whole firm down! as an insider, i really ybelieve marc's downfall was a direct result of his depression after his father's death and the hiring of his neurotic, evil assistant. no one could approach him because he hired this horrible uneducated crass woman who was as sweet as pie to his face and was a bully to everyone else in the firm. She belittled everyone and threatened to fire them, for minor mistakes.She was exceedingly cruel and was a horrible influence on the usually kind Marc. i worked with dreier for a long time in happier days, i haven't been there for awhile but remember him as a guy who did have alot, spent alot but also shared alot.
he must have lost his marbles somewhere along the way b/c he was always late with bills etc. but never this crazy and this insanely dishonest and desparate.
i liked the guy alot and feel really badly for him and all his partners, who believe me liked him too. he is a very charming person and yes he was greedy but also very generous. those of us who know the real md know that i am praying for everyone involved, there are some very good people there who are suffereing I am sure.

I understand the vendor pulled their temp staff from Santa Monica because DSKBWG is so far behind paying the vendor. Doesnt seem like anyone will have "fat pockets" when vendors may not get paid for services provided...looks like many will suffer from Mr. Dreier's selfish actions. Most would have pulled temps or other services if the firm could not afford to pay for them.
