Morning Docket 12.05.08

* Bad news for the big three: the New York Times says Congress “is suffering from acute bailout fatigue.” [NYT]
* There were 13 law firm mergers in the third quarter this year (not unusual). The largest number of combinations (5) were in the southeast. [The Birmingham News]
* O.J. Simpson is finally going to jail. He will be sentenced today in Nevada. This time, he stole back sports memorabilia from two people. Can you think of a more inelegant end to the Simpson saga? [The Associated Press]
* If you break the law in New York, at least you get free day care. Thanks to Judge Judith S. Kaye (New York State’s cheif judge), there are 34 children’s centers across the state in family, criminal, and civil courts. They provide a safe and happy place for children whose parents are involved in legal battles. [NYT]
* The shareholder lawsuit against the merger of Bear Stearns and JPMorgan Chase was dismissed Thursday in the New York State Supreme Court. [Reuters]
* Singapore awarded Clifford Chance, White & Case, and Latham & Watkins licenses to practice law, as part of an attempt to compete with Hong Kong and other cities in China and the Middle East that have benefitted from having international law practices. [Bloomberg]
* Discover is mad at Morgan Stanley for secretly hanging-out with Visa and Mastercard behind Discover’s back. Sounds a lot like middle school, only in the real world, you can sue. [Bloomberg]

Pretty sure you just mean "acute bailout fatigue". PROOFREAD!
and it's "memorabilia"
wow.
wtf
CHIEF
not
cheif
"hanging-out" ?
Also, it would have been more inelegant if OJ had stabbed the dudes.
Singapore gave those licenses to a couple of other firms, including A&O, Herbert Smith, and Norton Rose. Try to be complete, gawd.
#5 -- Your picture creeps me out and not in a good way.
Shut your mouth when you're talking to me.
oy with the typos already - sheesh.
"This time, he stole back sports memorabilia from two people."
No need for the comma and you don't 'steal back.' What are you in 8th grade?
This would never happen at Skadden.
Flim Flom
7, don't hate just because your teeth aren't white and your beard isn't snazzy.

Today, the Weil Gotshal & Manges partners will meet in the NY office to discuss various firm-related matters, including associate bonuses. The firm will look to its peer firm, Skadden, which has set the market at last year's non-special bonus, to determine its own bonus structure. It will eschew the half-bonus/no-special bonus scheme put forth by Cravath and followed by several other top law firms. This only makes sense given that Weil is uniquely positioned to profit in such turbulent times - Weil is handling a $200M fee deal (Lehman bankruptcy) and widely expected to handle the GM bankruptcy to be filed within a month.
Weil associates are pleased with the outcome (same bonus as last year), and will continue to work diligently on such matters with smiles on their faces.
S&C will likely match Skadden and Weil this afternoon or next week.
You heard it here first.
I want to be snazzy.
I have a friend at Jones Day in Singapore. So I guess they have an office too.
Not a bad lifestyle...says they very easily afford daily maid service.
Wow. Somebody has a case of the MysTTTals.
16 - does the maid service come with a happy ending?
tttroll, it's the quasi-blowback hairstyle. Unless your practice is in Mineola, it's gotta go.
"If you break the law in New York, at least you get free day care. "
Plenty of people in civil and family court who didn't break the law.
Does this person realize that "the New York State Supreme Court" is the trial court in NY? Using "the" makes it sound like not.
21, I think the answer is no.
21: the same writer also misspelled "chief."
