New York Law Journal Magazine Releases List of Largest NYC Law Firms
As we’ve explained before, overall head count numbers can be misleading. In these days of layoffs, acknowledged and stealth, firms could still be cutting associates while putting up big head count numbers.
But it’s always fun to gawk at the huge Manhattan behemoths. Today, the New York Law Journal Magazine released their annual report on on the largest firms in New York:
The NYLJ 100 ranks the 100 largest private law offices as of Sept. 30, irrespective of where a firm is headquartered, whether it claims a home office or in what state or country it originated or has the majority of its lawyers. The exception this year is that in a few cases numbers are as of October, to better reflect late-breaking events.
The top fifteen biggest firms (numbers show attorneys in New York) are not surprising:
1. Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom: 910
2. Weil, Gotshal & Manges: 679
3. Dewey & LeBoeuf: 663
4. Simpson Thacher & Bartlett: 657
5. Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison: 644
6. Davis Polk & Wardwell: 607
7. Debevoise & Plimpton: 535
8. Cravath, Swaine & Moore: 529
9. Sullivan & Cromwell: 499
10. Sidley Austin: 469
11. Schulte Roth & Zabel: 459
12. Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton: 450
13. Proskauer Rose: 448
14. White & Case: 443
15. Willkie Farr & Gallagher: 435
You can read the full list here. Behold the magnificence of size.

and this is newsworthy BECAUSE...?
This reminds me of an old skit on SNL or MadTV--the Sports Awards. They gave awards for "Stadium with the largest seating capacity" and "Tallest basketball player." Also, when reading the nominations, they would say the seating capacity, player's height, etc. So it was absolutely certain who would win and that was the joke.
Same applies here. Ridic.
Good work guys! Now let's all strip down to loincloths and wrestle in KY.
Sound good?
Don't pretend you aren't aroused...
Size != Prestige. Some of the largest firms are not prestigious, and some of the smaller firms on that list are prestigious. No correlation whatsoever.
I am proud to see Thelen in the top 100.
The Count should have a field day with these.
Latham's worldwide count is HUGE compared with the other v10s.
Behold "at" the magnificence of size??
well, Latham and Skadden are huge
Wow, based on this ranking, Wachtell really needs to step it up if it's to survive.
I am proud to see Thelen in the top 100.
Superfluity has 11 letters. Let's make a list of big words, too.

Once more, Skadden shows the rest how it's done.
Still not as big as Texas. Everything is bigger in Texas. They even have some classy stuff.
Dreier at 63; Thelen at 66. If I were at firms 64 and 65, I'd be nervous.
Wow. Over 900 attorneys in one office? Do prospective associates actually find that appealing?
18: well played.
6: sorry, but the state of Kentucky does not arouse me. Now Delaware, on the other hand.....
Who is ROD PAMPERS?
Not that it matters-but this list is woefully inaccurate. I know several firms with larger offices than the bottom 20 that are not on this list. Plus-who gives a crap about how "big" one's NYC office is anyway?
It's not the size of the office that matters, it's how you use it.
- Insecure White Guy
So much to COUNT on a slow news day!! AH AH AH AH AH!!!!!!!
Can we count on updates when these attorney numbers change due to layoffs? AH AH AH!!
- Count Layoffula
Wilson Elser?
Who is ROD PAMPERS?
Forget about attorney count, what about number of practice areas? I've always heard that breadth matters more when serving clients.
"Size isn't everything"

Its not the length of the firm, but the girth. Just ask Lat. He will tell you.
Girth & Girth LLC
Who cares? Put on more pics of fugly people at the ATL party!!
I agree with Spencer.
Everything is bigger in texas, including the fat chick you texas losers wake up next to in the morning.
sorry to go off topic but which area would you recondmend a first year associate to go into at this point in econ?
and also is Davis Polk & Wardwell doing good?
Behemoth is defined as something of great size, so "huge behemoth" is redundant and just another example of the horrendous writing quality of this blog.
900 slaves in one office = TTT
Zzzzzz.... wake me up when y'all are done yammering about NYC....
36 = fail.
Good is an adjective. Well is an adverb. You sound retarded.
38 = racist Texan
concur with 37
also, elie is (and has) a huge behemoth ass
35, you forgot about the AIDS in Texas, which is much bigger than up North.
I have fast become a fan of the Count.
When was this list computed? As of last week, that Paul Weiss figure might be reduced by 1.
Dear President Elect Obama,
Congratulations on your election. Unfortunately I couldn't vote in this election. No I'm not a convicted felon, I'm a crime victim and witness who has to remain hidden out of fear for my life, separated from my family, friends and a son who has desperately needed the involvement of his father in his life.
Let me give you a snippet of my story. I was a partner in a merchant banking firm called Barra Capital. One of my partners, Seamus Hatch, a U.K. citizen with a U.S. green card met, dated and eventually married a partner with a major law firm, Marcia Bruggeman Hatch with the now dissolved Heller Ehrman. Ms. Bruggeman Hatch has a close friend from college who is the head of a major narcotics trafficking ring that operate(s)(ed) in the San Francisco Bay Area. Ms. Bruggeman-Hatch and her husband promoted the idea of laundering her friend’s drug money using Barra Capital. I refused to go along with the scheme. In fact, I initiated a private investigation into her husband’s activities. During the course of my investigation I discovered fraud upon my firm perpetrated by Seamus Hatch, bribing judicial officials, electronic data theft and infractions of the foreign corrupt practices act.
Information in hand, on May 9, 2005, I reported the foregoing activity to Miles Frederick Ehrlich, the then head of the White Collar Crime division of the US Attorney's San Francisco office (Mr. Ehrlich donated to your presidential campaign-- I did not). During the course of my conversation with Mr. Ehrlich, I identified Ms. Bruggeman Hatch, Heller Ehrman as well as other individuals involved to varying degrees. Mr. Ehrlich told me he would speak to investigators and get back to me. He never did. Rather, Mr. Ehrlich quit his job with as an AUSA, established a criminal defense law practice in Berkeley, California and began representing Ms. Bruggeman-Hatch and her husband against to assist them to evade investigation, prosecution as well as deter me from continuing to pursue remedies against his client(s).
Upon learning of Mr. Ehrlich's representation of Ms. Bruggeman-Hatch, I re-reported the case to a US Attorney and have spoken to investigators at the FBI. So far the DOJ has done nothing to protect me. I guess they’re trying to whisk this under the rug too?
Because the case involves money laundering and narcotics trafficking I as a witness and victim have been separated from my child and family. My father died earlier this year, but out of fear for my life I couldn't attend his funeral. My child has gotten himself involved in drugs and dropped out of school but out of fear for my life as well as the safety of my family, I couldn't be there to lead him in the right direction.
We need to restructure the judicial branch of the U.S. Government and we need to regulate attorneys. Bar Associations are too sparsely funded to adequately regulate attorney conduct. And allowing them to continue to regulate themselves is not an option. Apparently, I'm a victim without remedies but I would like my child to have a country free of a corrupt government, influenced by special interests-- including ATTORNEYS.
That would be change!

Each herpes sore is much bigger in texas than in other states.
Also, the viscosity of gonorrhea is much higher in texas.
As evidenced by this chart, Buffalo is the second most prestigious city in New York!! But I always knew that, of course, because I can see it (well, the thruway anyway) from my backyard.
Buffalo to 120!!

Texas women = hugest behemoths
I don't know, 48. The Cuse and Rochester are gonna have something to say about that. And don't sleep on Utica, either.
The numbers don't lie. 'Cuse and 'Chester combined have less firms in the NYLJ100 than Buffalo!

With all due respect, you mean "fewer," not "less." But kudos to you for having more Stanford grads than we do.

You're welcome, fellow buffalawyer. Incidentally, NYLJ's methodology is clearly superior to that of Vault or AmLaw as it is much more analogous to the inspired methodology employed by Cooley Law School (C16).

1. Has Cahill always had only 8 lawyers outside of its NY office?
2. I note that TPW listed that it had 17 lawyers outside its NYC office ... that number, via website profiles, is now down to 15 (could omit 1st years who haven't been licensed yet).
I'm proud to say that we have 3 lawyers outside our Buffalo office. That's two if you don't count the one in South America awaiting extradition. Either way, Buffalo is certainly our biggest and most prestigious office. It's also the office with the most (did I get that right, fellow Buffalawyer?) Cooley alums. We're just prestigious that way.
-NYLJ 97 (Senior) Junior Associate whose bonus will match last year's!
Schulte is by far the youngest firm on that list - we're coming out, guns blazin'.......
Suck it Wachtttell!
- Kasowitz associate.
57 - The Cahill number is consistent with prior years, it only has small London and DC offices outside of NY.
anyone know Steven Klayman at Proskauer and why he is such a douchebag?
