Elie, you are a fucking moron. "Not as long as Cravath can still pay people in prestige points"? Do you even bother reading the articles you link to?
Another carefully edited masterpiece by "you're's truly"
MysTTTal is a fucking moron for a better reason, 3.
"If your looking to supplement your income during these tough times..."
When, exactly, did the rest of you learn that contracting "you" and "are" is spelled "you're"? I still remember Ms. Burkholder in second grade taught me this.
What sucks is that Elie happens to be black and happens to have gone to Harvard Law School. So then all the racists draw conclusions about... well.
A dc lawfirm literally goes up in flames this afternoon and not a peep on ATL?
"If your looking to supplement your income..."
On par with weight loss advice from YOUR obese aunt.
6- what firm?
Are you trying to say that the retard palin is a daughter of incest?
Palin is TTT (total trailer trash)
The whole fam is fucking retarded. Elie could be related to Trig
6 -- what firm? what the dilio yo?
5 partners were de-equitized at Covington, 18 associates fired w/ 1 month severance. More to come.

i'd say it's 9-1 that the kid had the downs sydnrome baby
"If your looking..."
That's just not acceptable.
Nervous T10 1L, I will personally out you on lawopen if I ever find out who you are. Beware of posting to ATL in public places. You've been warned.
Douche.
Sure, 13
Consider: At age 20, the odds of a Downs syndrome baby are 1 in 1,500. At age 35, they go up to 1 in 350. By age 43, the odds are 1 in 50.

@ 17/18:
don't you mean "its"? you could have still made your funny joke with "its" and "it's." but instead you just failed to accomplish agreement between your noun ("third grade") and your pronoun ("their").
i love it when grammar bitches make mistakes in their own grammar bitching. it just makes me happy.
1L how do you have a GPA, semester's not over?
Is the mystique gone from biglaw?
Yes, when you have some fat ass named Elie Mystal blogging about it.
6, 12- that's more like figuratively going up in flames, no?
good people of ATL:
due to numerous threats of outings and other unpleasant things (including death threats to my email) i have decided to retire.
i originally started this schtick as a fun way to pass the time during the semester. it was entertaining to exaggerate all the fears about the economy my classmates were feeling but i think i've run my course. besides, i figure it's time to start focusing of civ pro considering i have a final in 6 days.
elie, you're a cool dude, don't let the haters get you down.
i'll post one more update early next year concerning the job i eventually take next summer but other than that...see you later ATL! *kisses*
-nervous T-10 1L
(please no more emails)
Nooooo!
Nervous come back, you're one of the only reasons I read the comments.
:(
You can start in the summer at Michigan. That's why so many of their 1Ls get jobs. Or should it be they're 1L's? MysTTTal? Can you help me?
It was all fun and games until Nervous started getting interviews.
Word on the street is, Jessica Cutler showed up at Milbank's holiday party wearing a slutty red dress and rubbed up on all sorts of dudes not her fiance. Some of those dudes weren't even lawyers. Shameful.
Elie, are you seriously still posting shit on Palin? Get over it. OBAMA WON. You can stop shilling for him now. Leave Palin and her family alone, for Christ's sake.
29 = Trig Palin in a fleeting moment of clarity.
*Listens to "good life" in honor of Nervous...we were all Nervous T-10 1L at one point (except those not at T10 schools)*
Elie, do whatever it takes to get Nervous back. Bring him on as a "law school reporter" or something...I'm sure he'll work for a pittance.
32, is that you nervous?
33: No, just a fan here at Michigan.
Bring back Nervous!
6/12 - think you need to look up the definition of literally.
20:
Ah, but then I would not have been able to insert the other, similar words. And that just would have been a tragedy and not nearly as witty as all the other posts here.
By the way, Chi. Man. of Style 14th ed. sec. 2.98 (n.9), check it out. Also CMOS 15th ed. Glossary of Toublesome Expressions, para. 5.202. More current editions also address it. Personal style and purposeful selections of words are not to be scoffed at.
I concur with all--Bring Back Nervous!
Elie,
Please formulate and post, for each firm, a lay-off figure of merit (LOFOM), so that the readers can refer to said LOFOM as a ready way to determine the impact of each redundancy in relation to the other redunancies. The formula can be based on, e.g., #of associates/# of firm attormeys * number fired; value of total compensation saved by firings to total compensation of the firm, etc. Location can be an added parameter. Being canned in NY has got to suck alot more than being laid off in Charlotte (or vice versa--that's a subjective parameter). Whatever the final number is, I suggest it be normalized so that it is in relation to 1. I was going to suggest we patent this algorithm (after you finished it), but it probably is not patentable under the CAFCs Bilski decision. Still, it would be a fun exercise for you. Please post the LOFOM for each firm asap.
Just as specific density uses the density of water as the reference of 1, I suggest that being fired by a 100-250 lawyer Atlanta based law firm (with 6 weeks severance) = 1.
Cheers.
N101L: I wasn't a fan of yours. Spamming the same line of jokes multiple times a day, every day is going to grind some gears. But, all the same, good luck with recruiting. I really hope that you can come back without the alias and bad jokes and post as just another associate in 2 years.
Also, look for EZ rules. It translates the FRCP into english. I don't know if it is till around. It has been a while since I was a 1L.
The only thing I looked forward to every day on ATL was potentially seeing Nervous T10 1L and CLS 2L Stud in verbal war of epic dbags. That dream is dead. Thanks for nothing, Nervous.
Any news about Covington?
ONE! TWO! THREE! FOUR! FIVE!
Five people asking T10 1L to come back! AH AH AH AH AH!!!!!
42 is somehow hilarious.
i think i might miss nervous 1L ...
42 is the best schtick on ATL. Severely underrated.
I found you funny nervous... more so in the beginning than lately, but I still found you funny.
Good luck in your interviews, I am sure you will do fine though...
I go to BLS and I can't find any motivation to study. Btw, why are there 2L's and 3L's in the damn library? Their fates are already sealed.
42 -- OH SNAP! You stole my Count Layoffula concept. No worries. People seem to like it, I say run with it. (although I decided not to do it, 'cause I figured it might get old quickly. See "nervous T10" for reference).
again - Lat, hire a fucking proofreader. These days, you could probably hire a former Thelen associate for fucking peanuts. WTF?
BLS kids - hang in there, for a couple of years . . . .
38 -
Using "said" is old school. Antecedent basis rules are changing. We use "the" now.
HTH.
Hey 47 --
It's BLS, so majority of 2L/3L's do not have jobs lined up (true story), and thus need to worry about GPA until the last bitter second.
Those BLS students who do have jobs (i.e. top 15% and a few lucky niche people) are probably in the habit of studying hard, so can't give it up.
And, of course, with word of layoffs coming on a daily (hourly?) basis, nobody feels comfortable about the future, so everyone wants as padded a resume as possible.
Now get your ass back to studying!
you're = you are. i can't believe intelligent people still visit this out of date hellhole.
The most depressing thing about Mystal's hopeless posts is that he had a Biglaw job and I don't have any job.
53 -- money (i.e. biglaw) isn't everything. There are tons of other jobs for lawyers that can actually be meaningful, give you greater personal satisfaction, and time to actually enjoy life.
But if biglaw is your dream, keep trying, and it'll happen eventually. Good luck!
Nervous T10 1L needs to leave and stay gone.
Count Layoffula, on the other hand, can be my main homeboy.
6- you need to do your research.
For everyone else:
S/he is talking about Venable. There was small insulation fire on the 9th floor of the building where Venable is located. The only problem with 6's comment is that the fire was: (i) not at Venable itself; (ii) very small; and (iii) contained within minutes.
You're English, impeccable.
For all intensive purposes that is.
Moron. Save us Lat!

Paul Weiss made 4 new partners last night. I'm surprised you have not reported this yet. The lucky few are Andrew Ehrlich, Dave Brown, Jacqui Rubin, all in litigation, and some guy in corporate. Rumor has it, that the bonus issue was put for a vote in the annual meeting and they decided to pay full skadden. more to come monday, i'm sure.
Yay, Nervous is leaving! Now if only Elie could learn to spell, ATL might become non-TTT.
16 didn't get a very high score on the LSAT
Good riddance Nervous.
In an economy where 2Ls 3Ls, and many current associates are getting screwed, it was irritating to have a 1L acting like a $3k/week firm job is his birthright.
*IF* what 59 said is true, then Paul, Weiss just minted three VERY young litigation partners. Heck, Ehrlich wasn't admitted to the bar until, what, 2003?
Would be nice, though, for the PW folks...ha.
I don't know what what that Palin nonsense has to do with that legal website. There's nothing wrong with political comments here and there, but Elie has no shame in overtly putting his ideology out there. It makes the site less credible and it gives it less appeal.
Well 64, she was running for VP of our nation, and judging by the photos blatantly lied about a pregnancy in order to better position herself in that effort. Seems to have lots of interesting legal implications (most of which, thankfully, never came to fruition, as she got the short bus back to Alaska).
The trend seems to be fewer major law firms, doing only the heavy transactional work that in house can't do. I would guess that mid to larger regional firms will need to be full service, doing personal injury, divorce, real estate, and wills. Maybe an increase in multi-discipline companies that include lawyers, accountants, and other professionals.A few crumbs to solos/boutiques and that's about it. I can hear a vacuum sound sucking the jobs away from traditional law firms.
62: Nervous was a schtick you moron. Acting like a 3k/week job was his birthright had the exact impact he wanted, annoying the crap out of people like you. The rest of us realized this and found the schtick to be amusing (especially when it got people riled up).
six months for the f word
"For the second day in a row, Judge Robert Ruehlman threw someone in jail and cited him for contempt for cussing in the courtroom."

Any idea what's going on with Covington?
Yes, Covington news would be appreciated.
Vincent Hull is a TTT douchbag
Could someone explain what de-equitizing a partner involves? Is he bought out, or just fired?
72--it can be either. If the partner has no clients, but does good work (e.g., the majority of tax lawyers), then he can be made an employee of the firm, but no longer has rights to a pro-rata share of the profits of the firm. Considering how quickly things are headed south, I'd rather be a non-equity partner right now. The equity partners may not see profits this year or 2009 or 2010, but will be on the hook for most of the liabilities of the firm.
If I were non-equity, I'd take all my extra coin and hire a clown, like Bobo here....
Palin is the dumbest bitch ever. Period.
Has anyone seen the new porno "Railin' Palin". I heard about it on the radio. Supposidly the production company searched the coutnry for a Palin look-a-like. I haven't seen it yet.
Are non-equity partners typically able to sit on management/executive/policy committees and have any input on strategic operations, layoffs, etc.?
58 -- Intelligent, funny comment. Good stuff.
76 No, never, ever, not now, not later, no, no, no. There are committees designed to give input to the Management Committee (should the vending machines stock Trail Mix instead of Twix).
Think Associates Committee = Student Council
6/12: You sure you got your facts straight, buddy? Word has it that, if your assertions regarding C&B are correct, you're the only one who's "in the know." Please clarify, substantiate, or retract.
MysTTTal apparently forgot he was writing for AT(TT?)L, not DailyKOS, when he composed this post.
What a TTTool.
bring back Nervous!!! Don't let the h8ers keep you down!!!!
i'm sorry, how is sarah palin law related?
I was a T10 1L. I had so much fun my 1L summer at a NYC BIGLAW firm. I had twice the fun during my 2L summer.
Keep going for the dream, NT101L!!!
Nervous please come back! Your schtick was the only one that actually had personality.
:(
84 - You're right about the personality thing. I was interested to see what would develop from the numerous sexual advances Nervous made on Elie...it had so much potential.
*adds name to the bring back Nervous petition*
I find it difficult to believe that the people complaining Palin's pregnancy is "not law related" actually find it objectionable on that basis. ATL covers scandals of politicians all the time (Spitzer, etc.). If she did lie it would be HUGE news! Did she tamper with birth certificates? Did she call in favors? Did she lie on an official form? (All legal issues by the way). You may not want ATL to link to the story because it is in some strained sense "partisan" (in that it questions the veracity of a Republican politician), but there is no way that you can object to the story on the basis that it doesn't have anything to do with the law. Get over it and just admit that you don't like people questioning Gov. Palin's story.
Here's some links corroborating Palin's pregnancy:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/lee-stranahan/anchorage-tv-station-pali_b_123029.html
http://bluewavecanada.blogspot.com/2008/09/dailykos-sarah-palin-pregnant-with-trig.html
Sorry, 87. One photograph with a controversial date stamp is not going to cut it. The fact is, Palin and her campaign had HUNDREDS of opportunities to put this baby (no pun intended) to rest and they have refused to disclose medical records or provide any other evidence that would kill this story, even on background. Media relations people killing wild non-stories needn't and typically are not done publicly. There is a legitimate chance that the baby is Bristol's, not hers. See the link in the post.
I personally believe that this is the case. When it is uncovered, the shit will hit the veritable fan.
86 = elie troll
Why should she have to disclose medical records? Last time I checked, privacy of medical records is a pretty big deal in this country.
Why should she have to disclose medical records? Last time I checked, privacy of medical records is a pretty big deal in this country.
90+91
Since when have governors/presidential candidates had any reasonable expectation of privacy in this country?
88 - this newest photo is unconvincing. She is taking a picture with a child, so she is stooping down. When you stoop, your but goes out and your belly comes in. So, because she is taking a pic with a child/stooping, her belly isn't nearly as prominent.
The "evidence" that the baby isn't hers is pretty weak. And the burden of proof here is definitely on people to prove that she wasn't pregnant, so stop trying to shift the burden to her by asking her to present medical testimony. The burden isn't on her.
79 -- Associate here at C&B in DC. If there were any associates or partners fired it certainly wasn't in the DC office. We are busier than ever and the partners tell us profits have actually increased since the banks tanked. Maybe the poster is referring to a different office of the firm, but this is doubtful. No worries.
So are people honestly saying that Palin carried a child to term with *no one* in Alaska noticing (or didn't)? Sounds a little far fetched as I can normally tell when someone is 8 months pregnant or not.
Let it go. I am begging you. YOU WON THE ELECTION. Cant you people be happy or are you only capable of ennui. LET IT GO. Although I have to admit that perhaps you aren't all that happy as our President-elect seems to have misled you all and has not yet appointed a single communist to the administration.
76 - non-equity partner is a person called a partner so that he can be sold better and at a higher rate. Input in strategic decisions - hello, what century are you living in? Which EQUITY partner has that possibility in the average US firm? Only those who are chosen (co-opted, mostly) to some committee may have the right to do so.
If they speak up, and make a comment against the tide, they may get reprimanded and in any event, will not be liked by central management any longer.
- an equity partner and committee member
96, it's not about winning. It's about honesty. If candidates, even failing ones, lied to millions, then they deserve to be dragged through the mud.
Of course, when Obama and his people get caught lying, I'll be annoyed if they're not put through the ringer.
Let's say it isn't Palin's baby.
Ok. So what? Who cares? Is it as bad as being a member of a Anti-American church? Is it as bad as being friends with terrorists? A coke head? A plagiarist? Is it as bad as spending $147 million on temporary tattoos during a depression?
Is it as bad as being the president elect and breaking your promises (accepting public financing, Iraq time line, raising taxes in economic downturn)?
Can we be hateful, divisive, and reasonable?!
YES WE CAN!!!!!

Are there firms hiring 1L summers this year? My office isn't this year and I was curious whether others are.
Nervous has three interviews. I'm curious to know which firms are hiring, Elie should do a post on this.
96 - He did appoint Daschle.
I thought this was about Mystal...
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/07/opinion/07egan.html
Andrew Sullivan's a complete ass, but at least he's not stupid like Mystal.
Truly ridiculous: The idea that a woman should release her baby's medical records the public to disprove a lame rumor concocted by an ass like Andrew Sullivan.
Maybe Andrew Sullivan should release his medical records to prove he is not an alien imposter sent to indoctrinate the stupidest segment of the human population.
95: I believe Palin herself attributed it to her "tight abs." Give me a break. I, for one, would actually like to know if her pregnancy was a lie. If it was, that means she wheeled out her daughter's baby as her own during the lead-up to election day and sold herself as "walking the walk" for not aborting a child with birth defects. Pretty reprehensible, if it's true.
"'“She wanted to get back to Alaska to have that baby,” said a friend, Curtis Menard. “Man, that is one tough lady.”"
Or a selfish asshole, given her age, the stage of her pregnancy, and the fact that she knew the baby had Down's Syndrome.
Sarah Palin is an awesome force of nature!
If only Elie and the MSM put 10% as much effort into investigating Obama, this country probably wouldn't have just elected such an embarrassment to lead the nation.
