Associate Bonus Watch: Mayer Brown’s Non-NYC Offices
Mayer Brown already announced that New York bonuses would match the New York market. Last night, the firm announced its bonus structure for offices in Chicago, Palo Alto and Washington, D.C.
We are pleased to announce that the Firm’s bonus structure for work done in 2008 will be the same as it was for work done in 2007.
Yay?
We couldn’t find last year’s Mayer Brown bonus memos for offices outside of New York. But based on what peer firms paid out last year, it certainly doesn’t look like associates will be getting more than their counterparts in New York.
Still, given that we are living in a time of salary freezes and layoffs, anything that resembles 2007 is probably a good thing.

MAYER BROWN — MEMO — 2008 BONUSES
We are pleased to announce that the Firm’s bonus structure for work done in 2008 will be the same as it was for work done in 2007. We anticipate that the bonuses will be included in the March 6 paychecks. We are grateful for the significant contributions made in 2008 by our associates to the professional and financial success of the Firm, to its reputation as a great place to practice law, and to the personal camaraderie we enjoy.

YAY
so you need 2100 hours to qualify for a bonus?

1st place: Cadillac
2nd place: Set of steak knives
3rd place: You're fired
You heard it here first.

Kids in my high school used the get the same bonus structure as the year before, it was no big deal.

same as discussed. bonuses are strictly hours based. you get an amount based on class year for 2100 ... and that number goes to 2x at 2250 and 3x at 2400. Bonuses are pretty good, you know, if you had a lot of work to do ....
Alreadybored reports that the median bonus for a first year in Chicago is ~25k, which would mean that they ARE getting more than the NYC counterparts.
It's all hours based, with hours way down across the board, even in litigation... ie no hours = no bonus, thanks for coming.
9: Sounds a bit high to me. I think something like $17,500 might be more like it.
Impossible hours based bonuses and they froze...

Jim Holzhauer said PEP will be down 12% this year. No one believes him.
Any word on their other offices (Charlotte, Houston, etc.)?
hours based bonus, which includes all pro bono. bonus starts at 2,000 hours, and the bonus range is $20k through $100k, dependent on class year and hours. will they be better off than NY Mayer? depends...if you hit your thresholds, then NY is not as good. if you don't, you would rather be in NY where it is paid to everyone.
In Chicago, first year associates get $20,000 for 2000, not 2100, with additional bonuses for each additional 100. There will be some first years that receive $50,000 with others receiving nothing if the 2000 hour threshold was not met.
Elie, this scale is above the NY market on many levels. Do your homework. too bad all associates I've spoken with (including the high billers) would rather have had their salary progressions than the full 2007 bonus scale.
