The oath should be: “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Here's my take on the Roberts/Obama flub after seeing a replay several times. First Flub: Obama. Roberts proceeds with the swearing in and Obama jumps the gun before Roberts gets done. Second Flub: Roberts. He incorrectly places the word "faithfully" and Obama waits for Roberts to get it right. Third Flub: Obama. Even after Roberts corrects himself, Obama still says it wrong and says faithfully at the end of the line instead of the start, just in the manner that Roberts had mistakenly said it at the start.

I'm not sure what happens if the President fails to take the oath, though, but it certainly doesn't strip him of the presidency. Only death, impeachment, or disability via the 25th amendment can strip him of the presidency. I doubt failing to take the oath is impeachable. Perhaps failing to take the oath could give rise for the VP and the majority of the cabinet to declare the President unable to discharge the duties of office and allow them to invoke Section 4 of the 25th amendment.

But either way, Obama basically got the oath out. If he gets re-elected, they should use a teleprompter.

Actually, 145, that's not right. If you go back to 1993, C.J. Rehnquist asked Bill Clinton if he was ready for the oath by referring to him as Governor. I believe the same also happened to Reagan in 1981. Although all of the above used President-Elect prior to their inaugurations, the use of their honorific titles of "Governor" or "Senator" (as the case may be) were appropriate at the time of their inaugurations. Put another way, one can only have a title for an office that one holds or has held. There is no such office as "President-Elect" so the title itself is purely a casual acknowledgement of the potential office such person will inhabit in the near future.
