Cadwalader’s Link Is Moving to London

Cadwalader Wickersham Taft new logo CWT AboveTheLaw blog.jpgJust to close the loop on Cadwalader’s London partner defection, firm chairman Christ White sent the following firm wide email:

Seven partners in the London office resigned from the Firm today to join Paul Hastings. The reduction in capabilities in London is unfortunate. However, these departures allow us to rebuild the London office into a profitable operation with a focus consistent with the Firm’s long-term objectives. We start this rebuilding process with a very strong foundation in Capital Markets, Financial Restructuring and Tax led by partners Angus Duncan, Richard Nevins, Nick Shiren and Adam Blakemore. Bob Link will move to London in February to lead the Firm’s rebuilding effort.

So, you’re sending the guy you just ousted to rebuild the London office that just got eviscerated?

Sounds about right.

23 is right. The constant immaturity has become unbearable. ATL will have to start deleting these posts or I predict that an alternative to ATL (with aggressive deletion of nonsense posts) is in our future.

Hey, the market exists. If ATL continues down this road someone will take advantage of it sooner or later.

31- because their partners (who bring that PPP) are shameless mercenaries who will walk (see above) at the drop of a hat if their PPP declines by one cent. They got hired for their book, they stayed for the PPP, and now will leave with that book to places with greater PPP options.

Sending a mustachioed hayseed to be in charge of the London offices is asking someone to put bandages on the Titanic after it hit an iceberg.

Chris White is either being amazingly stupid or Machiavellian.

If Bob Link fails to hold together London, he will be left holding the shit sandwich. I don't give much for his partnership prospects after that.

avatar
74 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, January 15, 2009 3:37 PM

No 73 - you are a fucking idiot. I don't like to cuss to get my point across but you are an idiot. The Titanic hitting the iceberg would be New York, not London. The London office has so little to do with the rest of the firmwide operations it isn't even funny. Nobody says Clifford Chance is going to drop off a cliff and die because they fired 80 London attorneys.

Seriously, any of you posting about London office issues claiming this will be the death of any US firm do not understand how US based law firms use their foreign offices. It is, amusingly, almost entirely a question of aesthetics and networking with foreign clients, more so than a huge revenue booster.

CWT's revenue does and always will come disproportionately per head from its NY office, not DC, London, Beijing or Charlotte.

Anyone care to take a stab at a parody to reservoir dogs? For example, I will start by saying that C. White should be "Mr. White" because he has a "cool sounding name." So, who would be "Mr. Brown", "Mr. Blue", "Mr. Black", "Mr. Blonde" and, the one and only, "Mr. Pink".

avatar
81 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, January 15, 2009 5:09 PM

"Why not the non-existent China office?!"

They were planning to send him to the stealth Moscow office, but after the stealth layoffs of the stealth associates and defections by stealth partners, there wasn't enough left to hide Link--what remained of the office would have to come into the open. And, thanks to ATL, we all know what's happening at non-stealth Moscow offices of US and UK firms.

I am glad that this website is only known by the legal community. God forbid the rest of the world should discover that those inside the legal community are as callous and idiotic as lawyers are depicted in the media. When I entered law school it was with the belief that I would encounter intellectual comradery. Instead I consistently read posts expressing joy over the loss of others. I hope you truly understand the effect your posts have on the lives of those in the firms you scoff at.

Long live CWT. I hope their management continues to fight for the firms existence and for the jobs of those associates still on the payroll.

I cannot fathom why CWT selected a partner who has been quoted as saying he does not have much use for Yale Law graduates (see 2007 interview/article) to go and rub elbows with the Magic Circle, as well as other firms and barristers/solicitors cut from that cloth. Oh well, my understanding is that human bonds were never really what drove legal professionals in the U.S. and elsewhere to join CWT.
