Howell Jackson Named Acting Dean of HLS
Howell Jackson will be taking a stab at filling Elena Kagan’s shoes at HLS:
Howell Jackson has agreed to serve as the acting dean of Harvard Law School (HLS), subject to the U.S. Senate’s confirmation of Dean Elena Kagan’s nomination to serve as U.S. Solicitor General, President Drew Faust announced today. Jackson, the James S. Reid Jr. Professor of Law, served as the School’s vice dean for budget from 2003 to 2006.
Jackson credentials seem strong:
Jackson is a graduate of both Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School, and earned his undergraduate degree from Brown University. An expert in the field of regulation of financial institutions, Jackson has taught at the Law School since 1989.
Thoughts?

First!
first?
Doh!
An excellent choice. Here's hoping that he ultimately gets the job full time.
i wonder what his policy is re: LOBSTERS
I had him for securities regulation -- he seems like a very smart and pleasant guy.
HLS' first MBA dean?
never even heard of the guy, but I had a visitor for sec reg.
um, who gives a crap?
Was he laid off by Cahill?
i just returned from kash's JUICY INSIDES!!!!!
I had him for securities regulation, and he seems like a very nice guy. He is probably brilliant, but wasn't a jerk about his genius, like some HLS professors can be. A surprising (because he's so low key) but good choice.
He was also a Supreme Court clerk, I believe (not that it would help him be dean, but just to round at his credentials).
Most peoples' thoughts: Who gives a fuck about Harvard?
Who cares if the Dude is teaching securities reg or becomes the dean?
The Dude abides.
David Wilkins should be the new full time Dean to continue Kagan's reforms and humanization of the place. The faculty is far too entrenched to care about any MBA-type reforms, which are critically necessary but will never happen.
Sounds like he got picked because of his experience dealing with the school's finances. With the endowment tanking, makes sense to have a dean who understands the budget. Good call.
Per Prez Faust:
“Especially at this moment in the life of the Law School and the University, we are fortunate to be able to turn to a prospective acting dean who not only is a distinguished academic, but also has deep experience with the School’s administrative and financial matters and a close working knowledge of the ambitious initiatives the School has been pursuing.”
I'm an HLS 3L and saw Professor Jackson on a panel with Elizabeth Warren, Hal Scott, and Lucian Bebchuk on the financial crisis, last October. Professor Jackson did the best job I have yet seen explaining the financial crisis and came across as very thoughtful and a total class act. You can see a webcast of the event here:

I think he will be a great dean.
Who cares?
I also had him for sec reg and think 12 has nailed it. Kagan will be a tough act to follow.
And 18, it appears I care, as well as others responding intelligently to this post. Or was that an inane comment masquerading as a question?
brown = TTT
Agree with 13 and 18.
Should've been Meltzer.
Erm... I'm not sure we can give anyone credit for being an expert on regulation of financial institutions. Seeing as how the current regulations dropped the ball so badly, anyone who had a hand in them has no credibility and anyone who knows a lot about them has a head full of soon-to-be antiquated information.
Plus he looks like a dork.
He looks exactly like Al Franken.
10, he couldn't have been laid off from Cahill, because Cahill didn't have layoffs. Did they?
As a recent grad I only say this:
Who the hell is he?
This appointment is wrong. No AB from Harvard? Terrible. Clearly unqualified for any job.
Dean David Wilkins.
26: Lemme guess, you're one of those "going to class is for suckers" types....
Nobody seems to notice that he is the namesake and direct descendant of a U.S. Supreme Court Justice (who served from 1893 to 1895).

Is he from Jersey? I believe the towns of Howell and Jackson border each other. How strange.

30/31/33: You've never had even the tiniest bit of sex, have you?
Also a recent grand, and I had never heard of him.
And I didn't think going to class was for suckers at the time. In retrospect, though, I see that it was.
With the right haircut, he's Dwight Schrute.
I second the Meltzer comment (22)- maybe they are considering him for the actual job?
22, 27: Depends on who's the better fundraiser.
Had him for Sec Reg and he was terrific. Great choice
Good choice for interim. I want too want to see David Wilkins appointed as the new permanent dean. If not Wilkins, then Minow.
SecReg profs seem pretty sharp.
What is his policy on grammar and legal (blog) writing?
Never had him, but on paper he seems like an intelligent choice. I hope he doesn't get the job full time (too much of a chance of him being a worse version of Clark) but I like bringing in a budget guy when money will be an issue for the next few years.
Hopefully he doesn't go "too MBA-ish" and eliminate the types of "extras" that have made the school and enjoyable place to be the last few years. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go skate on the ice rink.
Had him for Securities Regulation as well. Horrible choice. He only gave me a B+. Boo.
DAVID ROSENBERG FOR DEAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Stupidity comes from clinical courses, constitutional law courses, and people who teach torts other than me."
"I will tell you why nine-tenths of the faculty can be disposed of."
"Most people here don't know much about cases, don't know how to apply them...I'm talking about the faculty."
"Harvard is the best...of the very, very, very worst."
"You will graduate from HLS, and you will be highly paid for the damage that you do to society, and you will give something back to this place, and I will benefit financially, and I will bless you."
I love all of the "had him for Sec Reg and he was great" comments. What the fuck does teaching that class, or any class, have to do with being Dean? Having that position is about getting and keeping great faculty, raising money, and catching Yale. Fuck Sec Reg, how is he going to get Akhil Amar?
From SCOTUS to Caplin & Drysdale = FAIL.
Appoint DUNCAN KENNEDY?
his credentials sound good, except I've never heard of his undergrad.
