K&L Gates to Associates: ‘That was not your bonus’
K&L Gates associates have not heard about their 2008 bonus or their 2009 raises yet. Bonus news is historically late at the firm, and raise news should come in March.
In the meantime, associates got an unexpected bonus along with their second paycheck of the year. This is an excerpt from the e-mail associates received yesterday:
Please see the email below regarding an error with the direct deposit of the January 22nd payroll. In short the issue is that your payroll appears to have been deposited 3 times and the firm is in the process of request [sic] 2 of those be returned. So, please be careful not to spend more then your normal pay until you see that they [sic] corrections have been made to your account.
On the downside, K&L uses an inept payroll company. On the upside, the firm’s cash flow must be nice and healthy if it can afford to triple pay all of its associates. Indeed, as we reported yesterday, profits per partner at K&L are up.
The associate who sent the e-mail along to us is a brave one:
they said they’d take it out by early next week. i think i could head up to atlantic city. triple it. then put it back in my account by next monday.
Sounds like a plan to us. Not a good plan, but a plan. Full e-mail from the director of payroll after the jump.
K&L GATES FIRM-WIDE MEMORANDUM
Good afternoon.
I wanted to alert everyone to a payroll issue that occurred this pay. Please feel free to use this email to communicate the situation to your employees. Equity partners are NOT affected by this.
As a result of a payroll reprocess, our payroll company did not delete the bank transaction files associated with the reprocess. As a result, employees may see 5 transactions in their accounts associated with this pay. At most, they may see three entries adding money to their account and two entries removing the money from their account. The net effect will be a deposit to their account in the amount of their second paycheck of the month.
Please be aware that the timing of the transactions may not be in sync with the payroll date. This means that the removal of the money from accounts may not occur until Friday or early next week. As a result, please caution employees to only use the funds to which they are entitled as a result of their pay. We will be notified if our bank cannot recover the full amount of funds erroneously deposited into employees’ accounts.
I apologize for the inconvenience.

this is getting ridiculous. what's next, posting an article about Partner X at Law Firm Y wiping his ass?
You missed a [sic]: "please be careful not to spend more then your normal pay . . ."
Damn, that is ghetto, and really annoying. I wonder if the withdrawals may hit before the deposits in some cases?
Newsflash: Partner Chesler at Firm Cravath just wiped his ass with the face of an associate.

This means I'm buying three times as many lottery tickets.

lol @ 6 only because I know Chesler.
Was it more painful when they pulled it out?
Wow, I wasted valuable minutes of my life reading this story and now writing this comment. GIVE THEM BACK ATL!!! GIVE THEM BACK NOW!!!!
@9, was it your face he used?
I am going to take a shit on Kash's desk. Then maybe she will have to waste as much time dealing with my shit as I just did reading hers.
Who the hell wrote that e-mail? Hopefully it was not an attorney...
4: This isn't the first time Elie has shown his lack of understanding of then vs. than.
Any word on Cahill layoffs?
15, learn to read the byline asshat.
Kash did not write this, her LOBSTER did.
It's not like in Monopoly
The phrase "Bank error in your favor" entered the language thanks to the iconic 1935 Parker Brothers game, Monopoly, and the community chest card. Our top-hatted friend in the game got to collect $200, but in the real world, the bank's error can become your problem.
I agree with Spencer.
BITCH SPREAD THEM BUTT CHEEKS SO YOU CAN LET THOSE JUICY BONUSES BACK OUT!!
"what's next, posting an article about Partner X at Law Firm Y wiping his ass?"
If he doesn't wash his hands afterward, I want to know.
While we're on the subject, a certain K&E Chicago lit partner is known to not wash his hands after exiting a stall. Beware!
16 - Cahill is definitely not having layoffs. I applied there to lateral in as a corporate associate last week and am expecting to get called in for an interview any day now. The lateral market is on fire right now.
The firm should be embarrased by its grammatical ability.
Partner X's ass is on fire right now.

Take the money, close the bank account and go to Vegas. Then work there until as long as it takes them to figure out that they can't get their money back and quit.
Fuck em'--they gave you the money. Just keep it and tell them to go to hell.
Hey Dana Sisco - YOU ARE FIRED.
22, what floor? Please not mine.
27, right, becuase 3X your normal biweekly paycheck is enough to quit your job and run away.
@30: Lawyers--always so boringly practical. Live a little, damnit!
31, No, I refuse.

Looks like Ms. Mystal is moonlighting at the K&L Gates HR department. Failing to write out a whole integer numeral less than 10 is way beyond the pale.
Fuck PETA! I bet he would have been tasty. Where did they let him go/ I want to go catch him.
30 -- That's six weeks of pay! It would take me at least 3 years to save up that much money.
But when are BONUSES announced?
Maybe the payroll company has a faulty button like ATL's "Post Comment" button which never refreshes the screen to indicate posting success.

K&L Error in your favor. Collect $100!
(someone had to say it)
43: Someone DID say it. See 19. Go directly to jail!
Who the hell would think this worthy of forwarding to anyone, and who the hell would think it's newsworthy?
I pity the pathetic associate who thought forwarding this was such a coup.
This is exactly why I demand payment in cash, gold bullion, and strippers. I make my own "direct deposits".
"I wanted to alert everyone to a payroll issue that occurred this pay."
"This pay"? That woman is lazy.
And give the whole "issue" thing a rest. It wasn't an "issue," it was a misTTTake!
theeze pretsels r making me firsty mcfirsterson
To the leak,
We know who you are. We sent out individualized e-mails to each associate and staff member (yes over 3,200 separate e-mails) each with individualized typographical mistakes. If you turn yourself in tomorrow, we will take mercy on you. If you force us to cross reference our index of typos to determine who you are, you will be transferred to our new Siberia office (opening Monday).

49 - please stop - you're not funny

52- Here's your answer.
Once the "merger" is finalized, the staff reductions start. First to go are all of the benefits people, followed by "redundant" positions such as payroll, accounting, etc. and they are gone right now, not in six months. Next is the reduction of all non-billable personnel. Used to 2:1 or 3:1 for secretarial asstance? It's now 4:1, and I heard that they may even go to 5:1. Night word processing is next. It can be done at some remote location, so there's no more need for the night word processor who is using her days for modelling or cast calls. And who needs a local recruiting coordinator when it can be done some place with a lower cost of living? Soon the only poeple left in your office are lawyers, secretaries ( but not too many), paraprofessionals who can bill, and maybe a copy person or two. Better get used to using the printers and fax machines, and fixing them when they go down.
Next are the insidious changes. Senior staff who used to get four or more weeks of vacation? No more, it's three and that's it. Matching 401K payments? A thing of the past. Used to getting paid on the 15th and the last day of the months? Well, you can wait a week for you pay.
This is an empire being created. Think Commodus in "Gladiator." And when the two year guarantees on partner compensation end, blood flows. Ask the guys in Seattle.
53 forgot one thing. Since K&L Gates is organized on a "practice group" model, all decisions about you are now being made by a cabal in Pittsburgh who couldn't give a rat's ass about you or your plans. So no more business development trips ( unless you are willing to pay for them yourself), and no more seminars, bar activities, speeches, articles or anything else you do to improve your reputation outside the Firm. Because what they really want is control of you and your destiny so you're too afraid to speak up or leave on your own taking any of your business with you.
52 and 53, maybe your first problem is you decided to be a lawyer and go work for a big corporate lawfirm. whaddaya expect would happen?
tomorrow chicago, then THE WORLD! K&LGates Über Alles!
