Lawyerly Lairs: Cate Edwards’s Georgetown Pad
No Gropius dorms for her, thank you very much. Harvard Law School student Cate Edwards, oldest daughter of prominent politician John Edwards, just purchased a million-dollar property in Washington’s tony Georgetown neighborhood.
From an item in Washingtonian:
Buyer: Harvard law student Cate Edwards.Famous dad: Former presidential hopeful John Edwards.
Price: $1.3 million.
Amenities: Two bedrooms, five baths.
An NPR internship with Nina Totenberg doesn’t pay like a summer associate gig. Perhaps Cate was able to draw upon the fortune amassed by her father during his career as a top trial lawyer.
The property has two bedrooms and five bathrooms. A high bathroom-to-bedroom ratio is a token of a luxuriousness. But does Cate really need all those bathrooms? Does Papa Edwards — who might crash occasionally at Cate’s place, having sold his own mansion around the corner in 2006 (for $5.2 million) — really have that much ickiness to wash off?
The children of Senators Ted Kennedy and John Warner also snapped up some swank properties. Read about them over at Washingtonian.

Elie you damn moron, this is not legal news. What? It's Lat... mmm
2 - It's legal gossip, which this site traffics in (or used to traffic in, before it turned all news-focused on us).
First to spread mayonnaise on Miss Edwards' butt cheeks
A successful plaintiff's attorney will earn much more than all but the most senior Big Law partners.
i'd eat a LOBSTER out of her ASS any day!
She worked at Latham & Watkins last summer. I suspect she is returning there this fall.
maybe i'm too poor to know these things but i've never seen a 2bedroom : 5 bathroom ratio before.
That's going to be a long commute from Georgetown to Harvard for class everyday, but at least she has plenty of opportunities to piss before she hits the road.

Looks like someone is taking advantage of Daddy's guilt.
"washingtonian" reminds me that washingtonienne is knocked up. http://www.nypost.com/pagesixmag/issues/20090111/Six+City
I am setting the over under on delivery at August 1. They were married in Dec.
That house will be a perfect location for Cate to continue to shark attack unsuspecting guys late night from the M-Street scene, Third Edition in particular.
-An insider with some damn good inside information
$1.3 million? Pleeeeeease, that's chump-change in G-town. But still, I can only assume she got an interest-free loan from dad.
NYC real estate sucks.
5-- A successful plaintiffs' attorney will earn more than just about EVERY BigLaw partner across the board.
Father gives the nuts, but he should not crack them as well.
12, what does "shark attack" mean?
Seriously, I don't care how wealthy someone is, but nobody, absolutely nobody should ever buy their child a 1.3 million dollar home to live in while doing an internship.
I would feel like a piece of shit just for accepting a 1.3 million home from my parents.
This has to be a case of Edwards trying to buy the respect of his family back - what an asshole.
18 -- are you nuts? I would definitely accept it.
Listen, life ain't fair. Some people win the genetic lottery, some don't. You are going to have to deal with that, and not hate on those who did better than you. Or, fine, hate on them, but it won't make them suddenly hate their good fortune. At least, it shouldn't.
I'd take a free 1.3 mill home any day.

17 - think ASSLOBSTER
Well I don't see what's wrong with Edwards buying his daughter her first place (even if it costs more than $1 million). Edwards has a ton of money anyways. We don't know the specifics behind the arrangement. It could have been a really good investment property that Edward's daughter can live in while the real estate market is on the downlow. It's not like Edward's daughter is trying to be a starving artist or Paris Hilton. I think it's good that Edwards is providing enough for his daughter to pursue non-profit if it's economically feasible to do so. I think more trustfund babies should do non-profit if they are good at it since they are already going to get more money than they can deal with in the future.
She's totally bone-able.
Even without being rich and almost certainly having that hot hot southern accent.
23 = Trust Fund Baby
2 bedroom, 5 bathroom is ridiculous. Why not make some more bedrooms out of the place? It obviously has the space.
Damn it, *I* want a trust fund!!!
Dear poor people,
$1.3 million is not a lot of money for a 2-bedroom residence. At current mortgage rates, the interest payments are about $4000 after tax. You pay more than half that in rent for a 1-bedroom/studio.
Cate's clerking for a federal district judge in NoVa next year, so the commute won't be quite so bad.
Change has truly come to America... another white liberal has purchased a home in Georgetown with daddy's money.
(And Georgetown... so predictable. God forbid she stray from her comfort zone and live in one of the actually interesting areas of DC. )
Dear Asshats (28),
$1.3 million is a lot of money for a 2 bedroom place. That is all.
31, it sucks to live in Detroit, doesn't it?
Cat was a summer associate at Jenner and Block in D.C. Check your facts Ellie.

If parents have money, and their children want to do public interest work, I think it is almost socially irresponsible of the parents not to encourage it by every means available to them - including financial support. Its no secret that money incentivizes people away from doing public interest work, so why not remove that disincentive for your children if you can. What I think is disgusting is rich parents who push their children to go into wall street jobs, or work at corporate firms. If the kids do not need the money, there is no need for them to do those jobs!
28 - you're forgetting monthly mortgage rates, you son of a baboon. and 1.3 million dollars is a lot of money, period.
32, I don't live in Detroit, but yes I assume it would suck to live there.

"$1.3 million is not a lot of money for a 2-bedroom residence. At current mortgage rates, the interest payments are about $4000 after tax. You pay more than half that in rent for a 1-bedroom/studio."
Um, yeah, except that the point is that she's clearly not buying it with her own money. There's no way she could have come up with the $300,000 down payment (20% -- no lender right now will let you borrow for anything less); and no way she could have gotten any financing for a $1 million mortgage on her expected salary -- either as a law clerk or even as a first-year law firm associate. $1 million at 6.25% (which is charitable -- remember, she will be getting a jumbo rate, not the lowest rates now advertised) comes to $5,400 a month before tax. No bank on the planet right now would give someone making even a $200,000 salary that kind of loan.
This is clearly an all-cash deal, with the cash kicked in by daddy. Way to go, Cate -- you earned it!
36, I think you need to read the second sentence in 28, where it says the monthly mortgage payments are $4k after tax deductions. Though I am not sure what "monthly mortgage rates" are for a fixed rate mortgage.
38, the calculation is an opportunity-cost calculation, on whether $1.3 million is a high price for a two-bedroom, so it is irrelevant who is paying for the house or what the salary of the person is.
First off, what the hell kind of a name is Cate? Is it fair to assume it is pronounced "Kate?" John Edwards is even more of a pretentious prick than I thought to give his kid a name like that.
Second, she is the spawn of liberal scum. John Edwards is a piece of garbage who made his money as a PI attorney. I respect him as much as I do any other ambulance chaser.
Finally, "Cate" has no self respect. She clearly has grown up with a silver spoon up her ass and is apparently not ashamed to work the system. Harvard law...really? How much did daddy give to get you in there, Cate? An internship in DC...really? How many fake smiles and hand shakes did that take? Liberal politicians (and, as it would appear, their family) are the worst kind of people. At least a republican will look you in the eye while stabbing you in the heart. These cowards do it from behind (that's what she said).
40, you must be a real blast with the ladies at parties.
41,
I am. Bend over and I'll show you.
Now remind me. Which part of Edwards' Two Americas is that Georgetown townhouse in?
She's spoiling Chocolate City's demographics.
"They still call it the White House, but that is a temporary condition."
Guys in my frat used to get 2 bed, 5 bath places all the time. It was no big deal.
40- You blast PI attorneys. What noble work do you do?
Do you overcharge giant corporations to read the same document 500 times?
Guys in my high school used to buy million dollar townhomes for their kids after sexually betraying their cancer-ridden spouses all the time. It was no big deal.
Really?
Cate Edwards is a 3L in law school. Most of you commenters are probably in law school too -- think of her as your classmate. Can you really justify being this foul to someone who is not a public figure and has never sought the limelight? I don't think this article should have been printed -- it is relevant to no one and nobody -- and these comments are just insane.
Thank you 47, that is true FRAT STUD material!
48 -- Suck it.
Do you know who wasn't a bratty, entitled, worthless, incompetent nair-do-well?
George W. Bush.
Thanks Conservatives!
Agree with 48.
1.3 million is about a 7000 a month note before property tax idiot. pretty serious for a kid

48, who spoke at the DNC and has her own Wikipedia page?
Cate Edwards
After George W. Bush and John McCain, who do you think will be the next entitled rich kid the Republicans run for President?
58, if I make a Wikipedia page for you, does that make you a public figure?
Warner's kid's place cost 2.3M
Too love child didn't read.
@47....nice
48 - The comments are always insane. No story on any possible subject could be allowed to go by without a stream of comments about how women are only there for sexing, and black people are stooopid, and other matters the great legal minds on here consider important information. Shame on ATL for hosting the party. They're like landlords for the KKK. "It's not my fault - you want me to police what people think just because they're on my property.... " Sure you're not involved in what people say, ATL. You're just giving everyone a place to say it.
The Wikipedia page about 58 would probably get taken down in about 10 seconds.
62 - It's called the internet. People can find places to say all kinds of crazy things - their own blogs, message boards (like AutoAdmit), etc.
If you don't like the ATL comments, don't read them.

60, no, because Wikipedia deletes pages about random private people.

Sorry 60, you lose.
If you think it's inappropriate to write about Cate Edwards, blame Washingtonian magazine, a respectable print publication, not ATL (which just picked up the Washingtonian piece).
33-34,
Lat wrote the article. Try again.
Miss Cate Edwards is soooooooooo hot. Want to touch the heiny.
ATL used a very generous picture of her

Cate Edwards looks totally hot in red. Who's the ugly man to the left?
anyone know which judge in Alexandria she's clerking for?
74 - Samuel Alito.
She goes to Harvard but lives in DC? Spoiled Democrat.
I was WONDERING yesterday where Mr. Edwards was during the inauguration...
Democrats. PARTY of the RICH.

To 35:
"If parents have money, and their children want to do public interest work, I think it is almost socially irresponsible of the parents not to encourage it by every means available to them - including financial support. "
Are you out of your fucking mind? Is buying a $1.3million home "financial support?" Does she have to have an expensive house to work in public interest?
She could still do public interest and have her dad pay her rent for a nice one bed in Dupont circle or a less extravagant home. Better yet, if she is that concerned with PI, she could buy a place for $600,000 and donate $750,000 to the Southern Poverty LAw Center or some other good Pub Interest org. People like you have totally lost any sense of perspective.
Certainly Edwards is free to do what he wants with his money. We are free to call it gross extravagance.
If I had Edwards type money I would certainly not even dream of buying a million dollar home for my daughter. It is just absurd.
80, you had me until you mentioned the finger-pointing, race-baiting hate group known as Southern Poverty Law Center.
This is a group making millions off calling people it disagrees with "racists."
81 = racist.
How dare you question the thinking of black people and their supporters.
Funny, all you jealous types. So many of you at top schools used your parents' connections or alum status to get in. What is so different about this? Why not name everyone who was accepted into Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Columbia, Chicago, NYU etc etc on the basis of parental alum status (or something similar). Actually, I think that would be unfair and petty. So is knocking this poor girl for her parents buying her this modest place ($1.3M is pretty modest for their wealth). Shame on you all. Shame. Shame.
Oh, and I feel sorry for you!
Catherine's rocks! Leave her alone. . .
83 - You're out of your mind. I don't know about you, but I got into my Ivy schools by working hard and being intelligent, not through family connections. I grew up in a house with no heat and got subsidized lunches in school because we were too poor to eat.
My kids? Public school. You want money to have fun? Get a job. I did -- worked nights all through high school from the time I was 14 so I could have clothes and pocket money. Want to go to college? Good, take out a loan.
Sorry, you can't honestly support parents turning their children into self-entitled whiny crybabies.
85 (and all the other poors):
Must suck to be a poor. Edwards buys the place cheap, sells it for a profit in a few years. And the rich get richer.
Also, to the people questioning how she got into Harvard. Bush went to Yale and he can barely read and speak english. Get over it.
She appears to have large jugs...and eyebrows. Would still hit it.

Cate Edwards is a fat chick.
Dear 40:
Are you serious? You've never heard of a person going by the name "Cate"? Cate Blanchett thinks you're a joke. Her name is Catherine. How the fuck else would you spell it? Get the sand out of your kunt.
Well said 43
87 - I too would hit it, in the face, with a baseball bat.
91, agreed. I would rather have sex with a jar of nails.
