Nationwide Start Date Watch: Longer summers for new associates in 2009?
Last summer, we started an official Nationwide Start Date Watch as a few firms decided to trim costs by delaying the start dates for incoming associates. Why bring in new kids at $160,000 a pop when there’s no work to give them?
In 2008, Powell Goldstein, Thelen, Thacher, and Heller pushed their start dates back to January ‘09 (though it was not enough to save the latter three firms); Seyfarth Shaw, K&L Gates, Shearman, and DLA Piper pushed their start dates back from September to October; Pillsbury pushed back to October, with bonus incentives offered to those who were willing to start even later; and Sonnenschein and WolfBlock asked associates to start in November.
This summer, firms may not have to “delay” start dates. Based on reports from a few 3Ls, it looks like late fall may be the new norm for start dates.
Start dates are in late October for new associates at Clifford Chance and Milbank Tweed, and November for new associates at Morrison & Foerster. (Though with Wednesday’s layoff news, MoFo-bound law grads are just happy to have start dates.)
Later start dates are good news for those who want to take nice, long bar trips, and bad news for those who want to start building their bank accounts as soon as possible. We’re wondering how widespread this trend is. If you’re a 3L with an offer letter in hand, please take this poll about when you’ll be officially entering Biglawdom.
Check out the results of the poll.

Hey, what happened to Count Layoffula? He was funny.
CC's start dates vary from year-to-year anyway - class of '07 was mid-Oct and '08 was late Sept.
can anyone confirm rumors about 3Ls getting a call from a DC firm rescinding offers?
Brass Snobster
Shearman pushed start dates to "no earlier than December". We'll have a lot of time to relax post bar.
Does anyone know when Mayer or J & B are starting? Chicago offices only, please.
Thanks in advance!

12-14, does anything interesting happen at 3:55? Trippy!
Thacher didn't delay until January.
Is Marty McFly on here posting from the future?

i wish i could get a delayed start date at my firm this summer. i have a feeling it's going to be a 12-week interview.
*starts to prepare myself for constant hustling to get an offer this summer*

soon to be nervous 1L sa
Me bum smells funny. Will it be back to normal by 3:57?
What the hell is going on? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.
Hey you, get your damn hands off her!
Skadden start dates look like usual--right after Labor Day. Anyone heard anything different?
6- Which DC firm?
A reliable source told me SkaddenDC is merging with Venable.
Does that Google map seriously show the exact street location that survey responses came from? Creepy.
Where we're going we don't need roads...
22 is right - the survey shows a detailed map down to the street of who replied. At the very least we should be warned about that.
Anyone heard about Goodwin? No start dates at all on their offer letters. Rumor over the summer was that it would be October, but we (2008 summers) haven't heard.
Incoming associates should take heed that a later start date is not an excuse to be LAZY. Do research on your practice area and be ready to hit the ground running on day 1 - your entitlement philosophy BS doesn't cut it anymore in this economy and won't for a long time.
Paul Hastings just shoved 10 more female associates down the stairs.
@22,
the Google map isn't exact, but it is pretty close - back to work you slackers - I can find you now
With all the negative shit this blog posts about Cadwalader, it is truly shameful that it has not even made mention of the firm's involvement in the biggest M&A deal in months.
And I'm not even at Cadwalader.
The map is precise, but not necessarily accurate. For example, someone in Springfield, OH claims to have a job.
I am offended. Pleas moderate.
MB Chicago starting in Oct; Heard Jenner in Chicago is starting in Nov.

If that person in Bermuda moved to a deeper market she might find a job. Just a suggestion.
3L here with offer letter from a large firm in secondary market but no start date--just "Fall 2009." The firm hasn't communicated any official dates either...
Sullivan & Cromwell postpones its start date to Oct.
Firth, Wynne and Meyer announced that all offices will start August 09.
Bite size tasty nuggets.
US firm, London offer. Start date TBD.

I have an offer at K&E-Chicago and haven't heard yet. Anyone know?
Who is 26? Really? I don't get it.
@45 -- Your question is too offensive. Please rephrase.
26 = old partner dood, LLB 1952
Linklaters start date is September 21
Seyfarth Shaw - late October as well
I am offended.

28 - the poll is addressed to 3Ls, not law firm associates, you tard.
Assumes these incoming associates take the Bar in July, what are they supposed to do until Jan. 2010? Five plus months is a long time to subsist without an income.
I started in Oct. as a first year was in October and I remember struggling to make it to my first paycheck. Are firms considering offering these incoming associates advances? They they expected to take out more loans?

25 - I talked to HR recently, and as of now it will be "October." However, with 90+ SAs starting in the Boston office, I have absolutely NO clue how the firm will be able to handle the influx. Maybe it would make sense to do a tiered approach to start dates based on the amount of work that your practice area has. Otherwise, 1st years are truly going to be twiddling their thumbs, and in this economy that is not good - especially considering the rumors of stealth layoffs in Boston.
Pillsbury NYC - we will only get our start dates in April or May, so your guess is as good as mine. Personally, I would rather be told now, even if they have to say Jan 2010. Then, if it gets busy before then, they can call us and see if we can start earlier. Only knowing in May keeps your life up in the air for too long and makes you feel like you're not very important.
@4:41 and the rest of the number-referencers...
the brilliant new moderation scheme messes up the numbers at and above the comments moderated, so when you refer to the douche poster at "25" its not going to be accurate anymore.
I guess we're back to using time stamps. brilliant indeed.
58 - No, those are just screw-ups by commenters.
The moderation system leaves a placeholder - "comment removed by moderator" - so that the numbering stays the same.
@4:59 - bingo. You aren't very important, not to the firm. You haven't started work yet, won't start for nearly a year, and will bring substantial cost with little benefit when you start (especially if there isn't any work for you). Hint: it's not really about you right now.
59 - No, they aren't OUR screw-ups. They are the fault of ATL's slow servers.
Comments take a while to show up, so the numbering sometimes gets thrown off (but usually not by much).
What about McDermott?
Fried Frank DC is delaying start dates for incoming associates - December (as of now).
25-
I heard from a friend that was a Goodwin summer that they have confirmed it will be after Oct. 1, but haven't confirmed whether that means Oct. 2 or March.
Jannuary start dates are horrible. You spend all this time waiting for a paycheck, only to have to struggle for another four months. I speak from experience.
60 & 61 - stop with the self-entitlement shit.
There should be a spot for "I have an offer, but have no clue when I'm to start."
3:09 I agree. I think the "offer yes, start date, not yet" would be the most popular option!
I'd love an october start date or even later. Let me chill as long as possible before I get sucked into this living hell
Reading that the majority is eager to work early on just confirms my vision that law students are cheap insecure drones.
Stupid kids. You just don't get it. Half of you won't be starting at all in 2009.
You think the firms will take on 100+ new associates when there is NO WORK for the current, more experienced attorneys? No -- they will be making "friendly" phone calls to the (poor, poor) 3L's over the next few months, suggesting that, "maybe, because of the economy, they should look for work elsewhere".
So true, 71, these kids won't know what hit them.
Jenner starts in Nov. 2009
71 is right on. The "hypothetical" 2009 class is HUGE -- the biggest ever for most firms -- and follows two other big classes. No way a firm is going to take on that many paychecks if the economy is still in the tank, and with plenty of juniors already sitting around.
My guess: start dates will get tentatively pushed back until "early 2010", then a phased intro for the class. The firm will hope that some will move on, and it can selectively start others (maybe 30-40% of the class). Once it gets late enough in 2010 (so that there is overlap with the next class), a firm can just send out a "p.s. you're now starting fall 2010."
I don't know if Foley & Lardner is pushing back its start dates, but their Chicago office has taken away the summer stipend, so now graduating students must figure out how to live for the summer while studying for the bar.
75,
Boo hoo. You realize that the majority of firms don't even provide stipends, right? If that's all that your firm has taken away, consider yourself lucky.
actually it was an interest free loan, not a stipend
