New Rankings Reflect Law Firms’ Web Presence

muzeview web presence rankings.jpgMuzeview, which calls itself a “competitive intelligence services provider working with professional services firms,” has completed a new analysis of the internet strength of major law firms.

“This new index gives a clear view into the weight each firm gives to its visibility on the Internet, as well as the effectiveness of the effort,” said Paul Gladen, founder and president of Muzeview. “Some firms, such as Morrison & Foerster and WilmerHale, are showing a good profile on industry blogs, which means their Web strategy is paying off in terms of getting the firm discussed among the online legal community.”

The number one firm on the web is apparently Jones Day:

The Index, released today, shows a number one ranking for Jones Day, the Cleveland, OH-based firm with 2,204 lawyers, by no means the largest. DLA Piper and Baker & McKenzie, the two largest US law firms in terms of 2007 revenue and number of lawyers, ranked third and fourth respectively.

Even though the rankings take into account the number of times firms are mentioned on “industry related blogs,” Cadwalader doesn’t crack the top 25. Maybe the perception of some of the CWT defenders doesn’t match reality?

Check out the top 25 after the jump and see if your firm is one that people like to talk about.

Who cares?

Do you think Wachtell is sweating their website?

What sophisticated client even visits the website?

I always thought the client alerts and fancy websites were nothing more than a way for second tier partners at third rate firms to feel better about themselves. This only confirms that fact.

Potty humor is funny and all... but I think the commenters on here are over the line. It's one thing to make a joke every once in a while. It's another to deliberately create an environment that is hostile to women, on a site that represents the profession.

We are lawyers. We are here to talk about the profession. There seems no reason why that conversation would have to include a near-constant stream of comments like the above. No one has a right to say things like this whenever they want, and most grownups learn to censor themselves in public.

A number of commenters on here are intentionally preventing women from joining the dialogue. It's offensive anywhere, but particularly on a site dedicated to the law. Please enforce comment moderation at least to the level of a non-hostile work environment.

This is the method behind the list.

The web metrics measure a variety of aspects of a firms overall web presence including:

Search Engine Positioning: How high links to a firm’s Web site appear in search engine results using relevant key words related to the firm’s specialization.

Web site Stickiness: How long visitors spend on the firm's Web site and how many pages they view.

Web site Ranking: How popular a firm's Web site is compiled through user panel, web toolbar and ISP data.

Content Ranking: How much content related to marketing and thought leadership a firm’s Web site contains - including briefing papers, newsletters, events information etc.

Web site Size: How large a firm’s Web site is in terms of number of pages.

Web site Traffic: How much traffic a firm’s Web site receives.

Social Media: How much coverage the firm receives in social media, and the level of participation by a firm’s professionals in business-oriented social networking sites such as LinkedIn.

As usual, size matters.

Jones Day just had a record year for revenue and profits and it paid above Cravath compensation (NB total comp which has no billables requirement) . It took on more laterals than any other firm last year and it has a no lay offs policy that it has stuck to.

The comments about lagging profitability, cheapness, etc are just crap and the JD haters should get a life instead of expressing their crap on this blog.

78 is a fool. You throw around the tirm "conservative" as if that is a bad thing. Ask Citigroup if they wish they had been more "conservative." The people who bash JD are the people who oppose any compensation system that is not lock step. They dont want the merits to count. And JD is cheap if you suck. No dispute on that point.

26 / 81 - You are completely right. JD is a great firm. I moved here from a Wall Street firm and am finally getting credit for the work I bring in (which has been substantial) - much better than my old firm which is on the verge of dissolution!

43 / 78 / 85 - All the JD-bashing leads me to one conclusion: you are just jealous that you do not work at JD. If this is your attitude in your current position, you better be prepared for the next round of layoffs at your firms.

Not sure where this fiction started about JDs supposed no layoff policy. For the past several years they have significantly trimmed support staff. No history of visible lawyer layoffs because these are done steathily. Affected associates are generally told during the annual review that they should start to look for work elsewhere. And there are numerous examples of partners de-equitized or relegated to of counsel status. If you were to compare certain biographies on their award winning website you would see that certain lawyers who were partners in 2008 became of counsel in 2009 - and that does not apply to partners wishing to slow down as they near retirement. All of that said, JD does tend to allow deadwood (both partners and associates) to hang on much longer than most firms would tolerate. Good if you are deadwood, not so good if you are a producer, which is why JD also has problems holding on to the latter.

89 - the policy is in writing from various internal senior partners. So it's not fiction. Your posting is generally full of shit. In the first part you speak of stealth lay offs, but in the second part, you talk about them hanging onto "deadwood". Which is it? Do they get rid of underperformers or do they keep them? The truth is they do give guidance to underperformers to move on, but they don't do lay offs. The few I know of who were managed out were given nearly another year to move on. Hardly a lay off. They just made record profits and revenue, so I guess they've kept enough performers to have a good year in the midst of a massive recession.
