prank monkey.jpg* Well, well. It looks like my monkey, has evolved into a man. A poor man. [Swordplay]

* Governor Paterson is ready to name a new chief judge to replace Judith S. Kaye. It’s Caroline Kennedy … no, sorry, wrong wire feed. It’s Jonathan Lippman! [New York Law Journal]

* Liberal blogger of some note, Matt Yglesias, is in on the whole Sidley pro-bono, anti public transportation issue. [Yglesias]

* We’ve mentioned David Mills’ funny “Courtoons” site before. I guess we’re not the only ones watching. A Russian blog has picked up one of the drawings, begging the question: there’s a Russian Biglaw blog!? If anybody can translate the Russian we (and David Mills) would be interested. [Courtoons via Юридический блог]

* You need to hear to be on a jury? Really? ‘Cause you don’t really need it for law school, Biglaw, being a law professor, courtroom litigator, or judge. But if a juror can’t locate the jury box using high pitch sonar we should kick him out of the pool? [Simple Justice]

* Lateral Link has undergone a complete site redesign. [Lateral Link]

* Just to be clear, we are pretty sure this Craigslist job listing is a joke. The riff about vacation time is really where it unravels. Then again … just because it’s a joke doesn’t make it devoid of truth. [Craigslist] [Ed. Note: It looks like Craigslist took down the link, but now Google Cache can finally be used for something other than catching my former typos. Check here]

* Meet David Lat tonight at the Bel Air Bar and Grill and learn about all the gossip we can’t publish on ATL. [Above the Law]

Russian site says "Tomorrow is the first official day of work [after holidays]! We wish you all luck in surviving it, and hope that your work day won't resemble the one that is timesheeted [it works in Russian] in this caricature:"

Below the picture, it has a Russian translation of the caricature and asks for comments if the translation is incorrect in any way.

The blog is called "Judicial Blog." That's all I'm bored enough to TL right now.

What good is sonar to someone who can't hear? and why would someone who is deaf need help finding a jury box unless he was also... oh i get it you meant blind... I see how that would be confusing.

There's no one left who still uses "begging the question" properly if Elie Mystal misuses the phrase and since he butchered it, I guess that's that.

Wow!! A Lateral Link site redesign!!

Shouldn't we dedicate a whole post to this rather than just bury it in the non-sequiturs?

So only liberal causes can be pro bono?

And BTW, the author of that article about the Purple Line should realize that only ignoramuses like Al Gore still believe in man-made global warming (if it exists at all).

7 - I use "begging the question" properly. I always get the feeling nobody knows what I'm talking about when I say it, though, since EVERYBODY uses it incorrectly.

The original meaning of "begging the question" is beyond redemption. I know it, but have long ago given up trying to correct anyone on it. I'd be happy if people just figured out its/it's and their/there/they're.

Remind me of the episode in which Peter fits in Stewie's onesie. Peter = Ellie but more articulate.

14 - 12 here; "Begging the question" is one of my pet peeves, and every single time I see it in print I wince, and every single time someone says it to (... which begs the question: blah blah), I say to them "No it doesn't. It invites the question. It certainly doesn't beg the question. Yes, I'm a grammar jackass; I admit this."

The Russian translation completely missed the point -- it translated the crossed-out language as "completed" and the the other language as "still to do."

18, you are not a "grammar jackass." You are a logic jackass. I, too, cringe when i hear "begs the question" used improperly. Problem is, news people, authors, politicians, even law professors use it wrong. What are we to do? We need to a new phrase to describe circular reasoning.

20 - Um, there's the Latin phrase, I think it's petitio principii, but who uses Latin any more?

Superjew hates Latin. Superjew only speaks Hebrew and Swalihi (to direct trusty sidekick Supernegro).
