An Update on Sandra Day and ‘Our Courts’

sandra day o'connor 2 justice o'connor.jpgFormer SCOTUS Justice Sandra Day O’Connor is on a mission to educate. As reported last summer, she’s working with Georgetown University and Arizona State University on a “free, interactive, web-based program designed to teach and engage students in civics.” It’s called Our Courts, and it’s now live.

By having civics lessons in the form of online games, O’Connor hopes to trick the kids into thinking they’re having fun while they learn about the court system and constitutional rights. It brings back fond memories of The Oregon Trail, and an excuse to play video games in class. Though to be honest, we can’t remember what we really learned from that game, beyond the immense satisfaction of shooting down buffalo.

The site did a half-launch back in the fall, and has since re-designed. The games are still not live, but are promised by the start of the 2009 school year. This was the original home page (we’ve pointed out some elements that we wouldn’t want you to miss):

That design is no more. Out with the old, in with the new:

Somehow, the avatars are cuter than the real kids. Which home page do you prefer?

O'Connor is TTT. She doesn't think Americans have the right to even question how the overlords in black robes rule us.

8, that schtick was funny (mildly) in the appropriate thread because it was at least topical.

Now you're clearly just desperate for attention and hoping to get a rise out of someone.

Getting a rise out of someone is best left to CWT '05 female associates. Leave this to the professionals.

This has nothing to do with Cahill layoffs, CWT '05 associates or JUICY INSIDES.

Didn't read.

O'Connor served on the Iraq Study Group. Luckily despite immense pressure to do so, Bush didn't take their recommendations. O'Connor responded by trashing Bush "anonymously" in Jeffrey Toobin's book, The Nine. O'Connor has no class and is always willing to trash Republicans in front of liberal audiences to secure her legacy.

From what I have heard, these games are supposed to teach information about the Court and its history. Unfortunately, the same people who think ideas like this will work are also likely to believe developers when they quote insane prices for development.

Games are best used to teach processes not factual information. You can teach processes through games that are fun and that kids want to play. These games can compete with non-educational games. It is much more difficult for games that try to teach factual information. I predict an epic fail.

I am shocked, shocked that you think a game that is designed like the above will fail to compete with GTA Vice City.

If they wanted a true cross-section of youthful court users, they should have had hispanic kids in white t-shirts and jeans as well as some african american kids in white t-shirts and jeans. They can photoshop in puffy black jackets for the winter.

The second one looks like a law firm site run by children... which is probably what she was going for
