Associate Life Survey: How Are You Coping?
On Monday, we reported on how you thought your firms should be managing the slowdown. In today’s ATL / Lateral Link survey, we’ll focus on how you’re personally coping, and what, if anything, your firms are doing to help.
Last March, we found that the most popular response to layoffs was to simply switch firms. About half of you planned to use headhunters to switch firms, and around 40% would network through friends.
But fewer than ten percent of you planned to take more drastic approaches by “rebooting” as a judicial clerk or tax LLM, or prepping for another state’s bar exam.
Now that layoffs have become painfully common, what are you actually doing?

Do I look like the blue balls of happiness?
Why not have furloghs for several months instead of losing valuable attorneys forever? Other industries do that. Firms have invested a great deal of time and money and then will have to recruit all over again

Now that I am laid off I fill my days with having my comments moderated and removed by someone named the moderator.
5, that's the best idea I've heard of in a long time. Makes good sense too. I'm sure there are plenty of people that would take a month or few months of unpaid leave if it guaranteed that they had a position in the future. The only catch would be dealing with the benefits, like how to pay for health insurance, etc.
5, I know this is happening at Cooley. Not furloughs, per se, but "letting" (i.e. making) people in the real estate group, for example, go part-time.

Firms are selfish. I'm worried about being laid off, and would gladly take unpaid time off or a pay cut, but alas.
