Nationwide Layoff Watch: Dechert Cuts 19
We published a series of reports about stealth layoffs at Dechert last fall.
But given how many firms have laid off attorneys, there is no reason to be stealth about it anymore.
Gina Passarella at the Legal Intelligencer (who has been all over Dechert) reports that 19 attorneys were laid off today across all Dechert offices (subscription):
Dechert has confirmed that it laid off 19 attorneys today across its U.S. offices. The group included associates and of counsel and several practice areas were affected, though the firm would not specify which ones.
After the jump, let’s close the loop on Dechert’s layoff of 72 staffers back in December.
When Dechert laid off staffers a week before Christmas, our Dechert sources were understandably worried that the move was a precursor to attorney layoffs:
[I]t’s not like we can have less secretaries unless there are less lawyers…
At the time, Dechert tried to reassure attorneys that their positions were safe:
According the spokeswoman, the firm’s attorney headcount is about steady compared to this time last year. She confirmed that it is still the firm’s position that it may see declines in some of its key financial indicators at the end of 2008, but would come out better than most firms.
As we have seen with other firms, it is possible to keep attorney headcount steady while still firing more senior (and expensive) people. That appears to be what Dechert has done here.
But this time, Dechert isn’t hiding the ball about the future. According to the Intelligencer’s report:
In a statement issued by the firm, it said the layoffs were “primarily due to a reduction in demand that has affected most, if not all of the legal industry.”“We are in a rapidly changing economic environment and it is impossible to predict the future. We will deal with the world as it changes,” the statement continued. “The lawyers who are being terminated will receive a severance package consistent with what we have done in the past.”
Do we think this is the last round of Dechert’s 2009 layoffs? Or is it only the beginning?

i called my friend at Dechert and she didn't even know about the layoffs. Way to tell the firm first before you announce it to the media. Anyone know which groups?
Heywood Jahblomie regrets the blood letting but indicates it is a necessary evil in these dire economic times we live in.
what practice areas? Any first years?

This likely only the second of many layoffs at Dechert. Their practice depends on high profits (they are the Cadwalader of Philly). That means more firings to come.
Dechert used to be the most white-shoe Philly firm, now they are just an hours shop. Its a shame what management has done to destroy the culture of what once was a great old line philly firm.
The ship be sinking...
I just called somebody's friend over at Dechert and they told me they are not friends with somebody anymore.

Current Dechert partner and former Heller Chairman Matt Larrabee is the typhoid mary of biglaw.
Two gone in the Charlotte office...
Bloodbath at Holland & Knight?!
Why the CWT reference? Seems to me that all CWT is guilty of is being ahead of the curve.
Larrabee is a twatwaffle.
I thought all CWT was good for was producing high quality horny female associates in NY.
7, 10, 11, 14, 17, 19, 23 -- your friend was last seen floating face down in the Schuyllkill River; stop calling. FAIL
20 -- PASS; this firm has managed to PPP under the current reign of terror like it was a public company managing quarterly earnings, playing games with the numbers, etc. Since they can't keep raising rates for already overpriced hacks in this market, only choice is to shoot more people. (Partners included -- service partners and non-equity partners beware of the knock on the door too)
CWT good analogy (without hot horny '05 female associates). Bet most of this wave is useless structured finance types.
No, 29. CWT is also very good at producing unemployed attorneys.

No - CWT is open and honest when it hoses down it's associates. Dechert's layoff numbers are well beyond the 32 admitted. And sending people off quietly with a (phony) negative performance review is worse.
LAYOFFS!?!? Don't talk about -- LAYOFFS? You kiddin' me? LAYOFFS??
Does anyone know anything about layoffs at Saul Ewing?
Have spoken to a friend in DC. It's Financial Services people getting the axe.
anyone know if they are gonna layoff staff attys?
38 - if you are capable of getting pregnant, now would be a good time.
I don't think being pregnant would help...one of the secretaries laid off in December was pretty far along with Twins...

I have heard that it was mostly structured finance/real estate types (that would explain Charlotte -- would expect NY/Phila were hit pretty hard too) and 40 Act/investment management types (DC confirmed, don't know about NY and London).
wish they would just do all layoffs at once so we could know

At least 4 from patent litigation.
Winokur is a disgrace. He lied back in October regarding the lack of stealth layoffs. Now he thinks that today's public announcement shows that the firm engages in full disclosure. These 19 layoffs today and the 13 last spring are the tip of the iceberg.
Winokur is a disgrace because he felt it appropriate to tell a publication about layoffs before he told HIS FUCKING EMPLOYEES!
8:30am the next day and the firm hasn't said one word about it to us.
But you have to give it to Winokur - keeping the testicles of the other equity partners in a jar on his bookshelf was a very smart move.
Go Bart, you are the king of that castle. Long live King Bart.
Don't kings have a tendency of being overthrown?
Just a thought
56: LOL (and true)
39, 41,42 -- the trick is to be impregnated by a partner
57, that ship sailed years ago. He's reduced the number of old line partners that might be inclined to vote him out and replaced their votes with mercenary laterals who see things his way. Subtle turnover in equity partner ranks shifts disgruntled votes off the ledger every year and replaces them with additional stooges. He's chairman for life, just like a banana republic military strongman. When he goes, the whole thing will fall apart within a few years.

66. Liar.
Couldn't have happened to a more deserving firm.
I overheard a gaggle of partners continually gloat that Bart has so alienated the entire partnership that he's being dumped as chair at end of this year. They kept rejoicing that his key cohorts have broken from him in disgust at his Lear like flailing and decades of diminishing them. They've apparently joined the NYC leaders to end his reign. They kept saying that Dechert's C&S practice can next year recruit lateral big time partners without Barf's filtering them for whether they'll kowtow to him. Sounds like killer Barf is a world class control freak oblivious to the rest of us. High time those guys grew a set and for Dechert to become a bonan fide firm. I can't wait for 2010. Maybe there is a future here. Walking the hallways for my pals.
