A new day is upon us. We are still alive - but will more layoffs come? I await with cautious pessimism.

2 Posted by bobandbob | Permalink Friday, February 13, 2009 9:14 AM

Absolutely, the pleasure's all on this side of the table, trust me.

You see, madness, as you know, is like gravity. All it takes is a little push.

This article from today's American Lawyer is a must read for all those who criticized the firms listed in yesterdays posts. The paradigm is quickly changing.

Much love.

""There will be more," said consultant Peter Zeughauser. "Materially more. I'm aware of some big ones coming up.""

Ahhh...that's sound reassuring.

And yes 6, you are screwed trying to go clerk right now. You should have taken your damn job offer, prayed it wasn't revoked, and then worked as much as you can until somebody tells you to go home.

Introduce a little anarchy. Upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos. I'm an agent of chaos. Oh and you know the thing about chaos? It's fair.

why don't you biglaw associates organize and do something to save the colleagues you claim to care about? why don't you approach management and offer to take pay and hour cuts to have them back? - i don't understand why you're not doing that. is it because you are greedy?

First, calling Skruggs a "tabacco attorney" is misleading - he didn't represent tabacco companies. He's a plaintiff's attorney. But, whatever, I'm sure people on here know that.

Second, I can't believe you liked Pauly Shore movies. Of all the things to come from the 90s?

23/25 Many, albeit not all, of the firms who did the en masse layoffs yesterday di dso to protect the inflated PPP that they had grown accustomed to. God forbid it might dip below 2M!!! Better to destroy the careers, the lives (at least for the medium term) and the credit of very hard working young talent. There was no need for many of those layoffs and there is no need to offer one's self up as a supplicant to a greedy dipshit partner that will fire you in order to save his third house. (And no, I was not one of the unfortunate yesterday. We'll see if that holds out through today. But I do see that 21 above has reassured us all. I definitely feel safe now. Thanks 21. I assume you are a 1L at U Penn State).

22 I am a eq partner a Biglaw firm, and serve in firm management. I read this website because (i) the people on here are funny and smart and (ii) it's great intelligence on what other large firms are doing.

The sentiments expressed in that article are exactly the things which are being currently discussed by management. If anything, the author understated the ability of firms to fill their needs by lateral hiring.

avatar
31 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, February 13, 2009 11:18 AM

The layoffs suck, no doubt about it. But unfortunately, its not so easy as expecting partners take too big of a drop in PPP -- because the partners leave and take their books with them. When the partners leave, the firm is in danger of going under. Then everybody loses their jobs, instead of 4% of their workforce.

30 nobody is buying your idiot routine. if you are what you claim to be, invariably you're in some weak practice area and about to be forced out with nothing.

perhaps you went to emery, gulc, fordham or hofsttttra, thus explaining your defensiveness?

30 I need to get back to work. But for your edification, I went to HLS and my take home pay last year was north of $800,000.

Over the past 6 months, I learned a lot about law firm managment thanks to the tipsters on this site. Some of the memos that were posted provided an extremely helpful insightful into how our competitiors think and handle similar issues. People ought to understand where the market is and where it headed. I was trying to provide you folks with the same helpful insights this site has provided to me over the past 6 months.
